yes, I too love the Italian accent -- who really know what a "Classical Latin" accents sounds like anyway? -- as far as I'm concerned, a recitation by a Roman Pope from the Vatican -- which safeguarded Latin for centuries -- certainly fits the bill.
@lalosalazar9999 Some important lines of evidence in reconstructing classical Latin pronunciation are contemporary transcriptions of Latin names in other languages (e.g. Cicero in Greek was "Kikeron"), the rhyme and meter of poetry, and descriptions of pronunciation by classical grammarians. Read Vox Latina by W. Sidney Allen for the whole story. But if ecclesiastical Latin doesn't sound like classical Latin, so what? Modern English doesn't sound like middle English.
@cengime Thanks for the insightful comment. I will check out Vox Latina. What is also fascinatingly coincidental is your comment re: Modern Eng vs. Middle Eng pronunciation since I just had the immense pleasure of reading The Adventures of English by Melvyn Bragg. That book underscores your point as it masterfully blends history, politics, linguistics, etc. in describing English's roots from the Middle Ages to the present. (I also suggest its audio version--the narration is superb).
Thank you for posting. I was sure I wasn't pronouncing it correctly. This will come in very handy in my classroom. :)
