  • Es gibt nur einen Luther Grossartig.

  • Great upload.....thanks for sharing .

  • I love it!!! And uploaded on my bday. : )

  • I wouldn't of picked up the guitar without this man. Best guitarist for me ever!

  • wow... the worlds greatest guitar picker speaks!!

  • wow he never seems happy no emotion

  • i never knew what he would sound like now i know haha

  • luther rules

  • Poor ol'Luther looked scared.....RIP

  • I don't think Luther was ever "all smiles" on any night.

  • I like how he'd roll his eyes. Luther was a cool cat!

  • He alway appera so nervous and uncomfortable when he plays, more so it seems when hes singing. Love his picking! definately underrated

  • emotionlessness, that's made him unique!

  • This song rocks. There is no humor in music these days.

  • Yesterday was the day when Luther died 42 years ago. :( R.I.P. Luther

  • he looks so nervous luther is awesome!!

  • That very telecaster Luthers' playin is up for auction @Christies auction house for like 75,000

  • @scittball Don't le the Luther fans hear you call it a Tele. It's actually an Esquire. Same thing as a Telecaster, but without the neck pickup.

  • this has got to be one of the coolest things Ive ever seen thanks so much for posting this

  • luther is great!

  • luther is great!

  • Nice duet. Luthur's in fine voice. Even though he's known with Johnny Cash, especially his great solo in "Folsem Prison Blues", He can do it all.

  • Typical Luter, nonplussed as ever, haha, he was a great character, did his job. Never missed a note. Sad that his life was cut short by a fire.

  • love luther *-* the best singer that johnny cash can have!!

  • this is great! i've never heard luther's voice before hahaha

  • Luther from what I understand was extremely nervous about performing in public.

  • Ha ha, "I am a happy fellow"... Priceless! Luther rules.

  • My Teacher says im luther perkins re incarnated

  • Thats great! "I am a happy fellow, you'll never see me frown!"

  • Luther perkins was the best!!! No one can ever replace him!

  • Luther obviously was a very lovable man. His dead-pan acts on stage were slighly similar to Stan Laurel, I think.

  • Are they serious?! This is hilarious

  • It is hilarious because Luther is not even smiling and he sings saying you'll never see him frown.

  • i love his voice!

  • luther perkins is awesome!!!

  • luther is a badass

  • Thank you, just speechless!

  • This is truly awesome! Thanks so much for posting! I think Luther Perkins was great!

  • Man he looks so nervous

  • JC used to lampoon Luther on stage a lot, with lines like "Luther's been dead for years, but he don't know it". Luther always stood stock-still, with that scared-cat expression and intense concentration on his playing. Sometimes, he'd just stare into the eyes of one person in the audience, all night.

Quite a contrast to Marshall Grant in the early days, who hopped around with his string bass, chewing gum & blowing bubbles. Together with JC, they were a sight.

  • .....awesome!!!! Jreb

  • man this is some old stufff. didnt he die in '68?

  • Yup

  • no 1969

  • Luther Perkins passed away on August 5, 1968 bud, not 1969.

    Check Wikipedia.

  • I'm Sorry Man Hey Check Out My Channel

  • @EliteUBH ....am not sure when luther perkins passed away, but you cant count on wikipedia, people can write whatever they want, there is no fact checking....its a unreliable source of info.

  • @pulangdragon

August 5th, 1968 is what his grave memorial says

  • @EliteUBH ....August 5th, 1968 , is right. It was just before my 26th birthday. Jreb

  • @EliteUBH didn't he die in a fire?

  • @Larm2112

    yes

  • @pulangdragon yep

  • Oh man, this was great! Thanks for posting! 5 stars

  • what a lovely man luther was , gone where we are all going

  • i m agree with you guys. but seriously look how serious hes looking

  • I miss you Luther... I wish that I could have heard you when you played live but you dies well before my years... Best to you brother, for I know that you are playing in the heavens with the others that are now passed... may your spirit influence the music today and make it right again, so that this sound may exist again!

  • Nobody has ever had a bad word to say about Luther Perkins. Despite what you see in all these old clips, the dead-pan thing was an "act" which only added to his legacy even years after his passing. Like Cash once said back in 1978 "Luther never met a person in his life who he didn't treat like an old friend - and fans knew that and loved him for it. Luther was really someone special."

  • @anthony1962 True about Luther being nothing less than a gentleman, but he most definitely was famous for his laconic personality. Cash himself once wrote about the time he used a fireman's axe to chop a doorway through the wall into Marshall Grant's hotel room: "Luther just sat there and said, "Well, I'll be damned".

  • @anthony1962 you really bring up a good point. come to think of it, i have never never never heard one negative thing said about Luther Perkins.

  • This was precious...

  • Brilliant - not a lot's said about Luther in any of the JC books - it's very difficult to decide if he was a miserable sod, if it was an act or if he was just aloof.

    Genius, either way

  • Luther was supposedly very nervous performing in front of large crowds.

  • Real Deal music. Why has Nashville strayed from such simplisticity ?

This is real heartfelt music, simple yet great.

  • The Late 'chunker' Luther Perkins, shows off his sense of humor in this vintage classic clip with Mrs. June Carter (Cash)

We rarely hear his voice, but we all certainly know his famous 'chunk' style

of strumming on the electric guitar ! a true Legend indeed !!

  • I like this little bit of novelty by Luther and June. A cute version of this beautiful old classic - done to just make us smile. I wonder if June could keep a straight face herself watching and listening to him with his dead pan demeanor. Lots of fun and I'll bet Luther enjoyed the play on the words. Thanks so much for posting. - Paula

  • It is so very great to hear Luther sing. And I think if you are always playing the guitar you are still much more nervous then usually - even though I don't think Luther was in fact very nervous after they had played for a while - he just was like it and he didn't want to make a show out of his playing (what a kind soul)! He really was one of a kind.

    Absolutely fantastic footage.

  • its funny cause in 1 part of the town hall party johnny goes we've been meaning to tell him this, but hes been dead for 2 years now!! LOL

  • there is no awkward with luther perkins... only awesome

  • he looks so awkward..but very cool. great musician

  • thats the first time i ever even heard him talk lol good singer

  • Luther Perkins was one-of-a-kind.

  • i had to laugh when he said "you'll never see him frown", whats he doing now?

  • nothing, he died in a house fire in 68

  • I noticed the same thing. "I'll be all smiles tonight." I suppose he was smiling inside.

  • how could you not. he's singing with the most beautiful woman in the world.

  • hey, i can play this song now... :) yaaay!

  • Oh, this remind me of my childhood on the country in Norway. We used to perform with duets and guitarpicking at the assembly room. We didn't get quite so famous, though :-).

  • luther cracks me up, he looks so nervous

  • I would be nervous too, lol. I think he done great!

  • Can someone reupload the video with louder volume please?

  • WOW! that was AWESOME

    love it

    Thanks for sharing

  • this is great thanks for posting it!

  • Boy... You'd think Luther could smile once in two minutes! I think he had some kind of stage-fright for sure. Great clip.

  • I bet you whenever Luther is around people like Johnny and Marshall, close friends, I bet he was hilarious. I think he is funny in a comedian way in this song, if you look at the name, "I'll be all smiles tonight" and Luther hardly ever smiles!

  • This is what you tubes all about, finding little rare gems like this. Priceless, thanks for posting.

  • really great!! thanks!

  • very very nice !!!

    5 stars from me.

    thanks for posting !
