JC used to lampoon Luther on stage a lot, with lines like "Luther's been dead for years, but he don't know it". Luther always stood stock-still, with that scared-cat expression and intense concentration on his playing. Sometimes, he'd just stare into the eyes of one person in the audience, all night.
Quite a contrast to Marshall Grant in the early days, who hopped around with his string bass, chewing gum & blowing bubbles. Together with JC, they were a sight.
@EliteUBH ....am not sure when luther perkins passed away, but you cant count on wikipedia, people can write whatever they want, there is no fact checking....its a unreliable source of info.
I miss you Luther... I wish that I could have heard you when you played live but you dies well before my years... Best to you brother, for I know that you are playing in the heavens with the others that are now passed... may your spirit influence the music today and make it right again, so that this sound may exist again!
Nobody has ever had a bad word to say about Luther Perkins. Despite what you see in all these old clips, the dead-pan thing was an "act" which only added to his legacy even years after his passing. Like Cash once said back in 1978 "Luther never met a person in his life who he didn't treat like an old friend - and fans knew that and loved him for it. Luther was really someone special."
@anthony1962 True about Luther being nothing less than a gentleman, but he most definitely was famous for his laconic personality. Cash himself once wrote about the time he used a fireman's axe to chop a doorway through the wall into Marshall Grant's hotel room: "Luther just sat there and said, "Well, I'll be damned".
Brilliant - not a lot's said about Luther in any of the JC books - it's very difficult to decide if he was a miserable sod, if it was an act or if he was just aloof.
I like this little bit of novelty by Luther and June. A cute version of this beautiful old classic - done to just make us smile. I wonder if June could keep a straight face herself watching and listening to him with his dead pan demeanor. Lots of fun and I'll bet Luther enjoyed the play on the words. Thanks so much for posting. - Paula
It is so very great to hear Luther sing. And I think if you are always playing the guitar you are still much more nervous then usually - even though I don't think Luther was in fact very nervous after they had played for a while - he just was like it and he didn't want to make a show out of his playing (what a kind soul)! He really was one of a kind.
Oh, this remind me of my childhood on the country in Norway. We used to perform with duets and guitarpicking at the assembly room. We didn't get quite so famous, though :-).
I bet you whenever Luther is around people like Johnny and Marshall, close friends, I bet he was hilarious. I think he is funny in a comedian way in this song, if you look at the name, "I'll be all smiles tonight" and Luther hardly ever smiles!
......that is a classic. Thanks a million for posting it again. Can't get too much of Luther. I noticed he strummed up the strings a couple of times, never saw him do that before. Thanks again. Jreb

Nice duet. Luthur's in fine voice. Even though he's known with Johnny Cash, especially his great solo in "Folsem Prison Blues", He can do it all.

Luther obviously was a very lovable man. His dead-pan acts on stage were slighly similar to Stan Laurel, I think.

The Late 'chunker' Luther Perkins, shows off his sense of humor in this vintage classic clip with Mrs. June Carter (Cash)
We rarely hear his voice, but we all certainly know his famous 'chunk' style
of strumming on the electric guitar ! a true Legend indeed !!
