Am i the only one that noticed the fact that the historic neck was made of a much lighter coloured mahogany, much like the african mahogany they used back in the day. I med that makes a difference too...
Hi - I have a Les Paul Custom custom Shop model from year 2000. It is in an Historic case. Serial number is CS 0232. I have asked Gibson for information etc but they are useless. Can you say if my guitar is a Historic model and if so what year is it based on?
thats why you buy a historic les paul instead of a new one, why i agree that the long neck tenon's are better, its pretty much impossible to tell the difference in sound between the 2. the major problem with the new gibsons is all the less pauls besides the historic's and the custom shop models the les pauls are either chambered or have weight relieve holes in them.
actually early 70's les pauls tenons ended right at the edge of the neck pickup cavity but it doesnt really matter in the end because once its glued its basically one piece of wood...the hell with Gibsons stupid gimmicks to rip people off.
I've got a great sounding stock '77 Les Paul Custom. It has a short neck tenon, volute, 1 piece body, 3 piece maple neck and no lightness cavities. And you know what: the audience doesn't give a SHIT!! I love it!
Yes " more wood to wood connection" and loads more sustain ( and no lightness cavities drilled in the body) That's why the VOS re-issues and the Historic original Les Pauls sound so much better than the modern guitars
Haven't tried one of these 58s. I assume that you get along fine with the larger 58 neck otherwise you wouldn't love it so much. I suppose you get used to most necks after playing them awhile. I worried that my 54 Strat reissue with the "Clapton" V neck would be a handfull at first, now I love it.
The 58 is so much better value than a 59 and who needs a flamed top, after all only about 10% of the original "Burst" had them.
Thanks for sharing this:) no wonder reissue have better sustain because of the neck joint:) i just bought 58 les paul VOS and i luv it!

cool, so which one is better??? or what are the character of each???

normally the longer neck tennon gives you more sustain and neckstrength, but the other ones are not exactly 'bad' or something

wood will affect the tone much more than the pickups the overall wood constistency of the instrument makes all the difference
