@mrac0515 - Saludos desde los EE.UU.! Yo soy un blanco "gabacho", pero yo vivo cerca de México, y hablo español. Ojala me voy a visitar España próximo año. Esta canción fue probablemente lo mas famoso de Johnny Rodríguez en el USA. Siempre me gustó.
Yeah, we Mex/Ams are proud of Johnny Rod, I just wish he would'nt be so hard on himself. We all had some things that are hard on the memory. But live goes on and you've done good too. Love your music and you even wrote some great songs. I'm making a list of 10 country songs called "I told you I was leaving". So far #1 is "By the time I get to Phoenix", 2, "Baby's gotten good at goodbyes", 3, "Riding my thumb to Mexico" 4,"Anyone going to SanAntone. That all I got so far, any other suggestion?
I'd almost forgotten about this great song that Johnny did! Graduated college in '73 and when this came out,I was darn sure tempted to do JUST THAT to get away from a bad relationship, but didn't have the nerve.(thankfully.)
He is one of the best country singers ever-I had every one of his albums in the 70's. Wow, what ever happened to all the great singers. Show em how it's done, Johnny! !On top of all that he was so good looking-had a mad crush on him!
Johnny's music was very instrumental in the Country Western scene back in the 70's and it is amazing how many artists supported him then and even now!
@sappattack01 I did, and yes he shot a burglar in 1999, so what, what would you do.. I do not consider that a killer, and besides, we will never know what actually happened because the dead man is not talking. I was not there, so in turn I do not care, I will NOT judge another man, you may choose to judge, however, I only like to listen to his music....I am not personally involved with him or care to....Have a great day, and enjoy the music...
Garner State Park He wrote that song and in 70 I went into the Army and herd it on a tape my mom had sent me to Korea, Johny was on his way. Met him again in Ft Bragg north Carolina and the next year in Germany on a USO tour, He was great . Through the years we spent a lot of time together and I know Johny. If some one was braking into my home I would have done the same. Johnny is a good man and I still love the memorys and his music. Sing on Brother!
Johnny's going to be at the Festival of the West, at Westworld in Scottsdale on Sunday March 20 along with Michael Martin Murphy (Wildfire), Lynn Anderson (I Never Promised You A Rose Garden). Larry Gatlin (
All The Gold) and Josh Gracin (American Idol) are Friday the 18.
I'm 17 and a metalhead, not to mention I sort of hate country. Yet sometimes, when I feel like complete shit and left out (which is a lot), I'll pop this record into my dad's record player and bawl my eyes out until I have no water left in my body. Not because I'm a pussy, but because this song touches me so damn good in those moments.
I'm 17, a metalhead, and I don't even listen to country. Yet sometimes when I'm feeling like shit or left out (which is a lot) I'll pull this record out, pop it in to the record player, and just bawl my eyes out until I've run out of water in my body. Not because I'm some sort of pussy, but because this song touches me so damn good.
@TheSuperWannabe - You know Son, if more men would admit to feeling like human beings and spend less time acting like they're some kind of badass, the world would be a much happier place. I admire you for lettin your feelings out. Take it from an old man, when I tell you its worth it to just be yourself.
@aircraftbuilder Thanks for that support. I just wish I had the courage to crack my emotional shell open with people I know than the youtube community. But I don't really have anybody that close, and I don't think I could trust them. Anyway, I'm just glad somebody else out there sees it my way. I've listened to this song all weekend long going to and coming from a track meet a long way from where I live. The song melded very well with the Texas brush we rode along.
Before Ricky Martin, Before Enrique Iglesias, Before Julio Iglesias, Before Freddie Finder there was a young Texan who could go from English to Spanish and back to English with ease, who stole ladies hearts with his looks and easy voice and got this old Texas cowboy plenty of dances back in the day. Before the rest there was Johnny Rodriguez.
Love this song. One of the first songs I learned to play "lead" on. All these years later the song hold up. What's really interesting is that the song is only 2:05. A short intro into the first verse, chorous then a 2nd verse that is only half as long as the first verse, another chorous, a short exit and it's over. No third verse, no bridge, no solo. A very efficient song. Thanks for the post!
@uncletomthall Back in the 70s, this was real music! These songs came from the heart, not from a big record company. When everyone else was listening to Pink Floyd and other stoner classic rock crap, I was listening to Johnny Rodriguez and Tom T. Hall. Pink Floyd is and will always be self-indulgent mass-produced stoner rock garbage. Pink Floyd fans are the worst, they get defensive because they know they're nerds. Pink Floyd's music is not pleasing to the ear; it sounds like crap!
This is indeed real country.
