If you had already taught your dog to only get the toy (no matter how exciting it may be while shaking the toy around) when you give the cue 'get it', will encouraging your dog to mouth the object like in this video without a cue undo the cue 'get it'?
splash is the absolute cutest! i feel like i'd get into the bad habit of throwing everything in the house just to watch her fetch it :) love the videos!
I really love the personality in your videos :) Some trainers have made claims that over-reliance on clickers in some trainers take away the human-dog interaction, and have become too mechanical and scientific, which is I think is an unsubstantiated statement. Just because a trainer relies heavily on clickers doesn't mean his/her relationship with the dog suffers in any way. Well done :)
Great job on the editing and putting the vid together kikopup. All the link is very seamless and classy I know it takes extra effort but it really made a big difference. I'm very impressed.
As for the content, I don't need to say anymore as I'm a big fan of your work and you just hit another one out of the park.
Hi! Thanks to this video, my dog is fetching a variety of items (including metal spoons), but now I want her to "present" the item to me (as the retrive obedience exercise), but when I ask for a sit, she opens her mouth. I've tried to hold her mouth while still holding the item, but she shakes her head.... Is there a way to fereeshape or train this? I will appreciate any comment! Thanks for everything!
I want to teach my 5months old Border Collie to bring me back the ball..
but everytime she catches it, she come back towards me and about 10 inches before me she runs back and starts playing alone, :( what should I do ? (sorry for the bad english, I'm from belgium dx)
Emily, you are an amazing young woman and so giving. I was so excited to see that there was a way that I could give something back to you in the way of donations. You rock!
I'm so amazed to see the other dogs just sitting nonchalantly on the couch - not concerned one bit. If I got on the floor & used my "excited" voice, both dogs would be jumping all over me! You do great work Emily! Love it when I have a new video of yours in my inbox!
oh my! I'm so glad you posted this. I've been trying to find the video on getting dogs to pick up objects for a long time! Good video as well. I agree, your videos I recommend a lot and I too have used your method with different species. Works great!
Love this video :) I have been teaching my Lab to do this with several things (bringing my shoes, getting her leash and bringing my keys) She finds this game really fun and exciting! hehe :) I also LOVE Splash's Rogz ID tag, very fitting ;)
Great video and as always so great to see the dogs figuring it out and having fun because of course that is what it is all about ;-), and you always do such a great job of showing that!!! Kathy with Liz/Breeze/Cricket
You know Emily, one beautiful thing about your vids is they don't just apply to dogs. I c/t with my horse, and everything you show is applicable w/him also. I have been speaking with many dog owners lately, and intro-ing c/t to them. My first suggestion is always your youtube site. You are def at the top of the game:)
lov ur video's!! super helpful! so far Iv'e been able to teach my 9 week old puppy 3 tricks already from ur videos'! XD but for some reason he doesn't seem 2 learn using the clicker so I taught him without it.
Seriously do you read my mind??? I just phoned Donna to ask for help on this very thing. Thanks Emily... love your videos and the coincidence is too funny.
@TheSpazzofMuffins It depends if you put the behavior on stimulus control- like service dog behaviors. But the object in the video was a plastic toy shoe, that splash hates picking up so I thought I would use it to teach her fetching anything is fun! I did not add the bit to this video about how to teach them not to mouth the objects on the way back, because I thought it would be too long but I will make a tutorial on that soon!
Oh yes, please do! I'm a very novice clicker trainer who made the mistake of teaching my border collie to fetch my shoes, and now he won't STOP fetching them. When I sit down for more than five minutes, I end up with half a dozen shoes scattered at my feet. I don't want to tell him "no", because he's just doing what I told him to do and it's great having him sniff out a lost pair of shoes when I do want them. Any help would be appreciated!
@TioMoka You mean the "prize"? The reward was actually kibble- a whole one for the big dogs and small pieces for the little dogs. but my dogs love all food. A great treat for dogs that are not as motivated is real meat and real cheese. (small amounts of cheese as it is unhealthy)
question, is it necessary to use a clicker, or can you snap your finger instead? will it work as well?

Another great one. Having a retriever tends to get me forgetting, what it can be like teaching this to a non-retriever. :-)

@musicofnote1 Yes, most sight hound owners and chihuahua owners don't even try because they think its not possible to teach fetch, but you can! :)

doesn't using items like shoes reinforce bad behavior? Like will it encourage them to mouth common items without permission?
