I've always been in favor of the 'safety net' mentality. Want to have national healthcare? Okay. Make it a major medical plan. Kicks in when your medical bills hit $100k (pick your limit). Then, you're buying health insurance for the the first $100k. Basically, trying to prevent folks from losing homes because of an illness/injury (which is bad for all of us). I think this general 'concept' would be welcomed by many.

While Dems insist that GOP plans will end Medicare as we know it, they forgot to mention that such medicare already dead. Eligible people still can apply to it, but more and more of them are not able to find a doctor who is willing to work with it.

Russia has "Obamacare" style healthcare for a long time. They provide care for old people based on one principle: too many people live too long - government can not to pay for them. Rich will not get hurt from Obamacare - poor and middle class will.

Like any program, the people who are going to be affected must learn about the ins and outs they will need to decide upon.

Educating people who can not use deductive reasoning, is the daunting task.

This sounds like a viable option however, something needs to be done beforehand about the management of any likely coverage options that Seniors may be offered. You can bet that a large number of persons will contract something not covered in a particular plan and find themselves without the resources to pay for treatment, which will likely impact Medicaid, and thus the deficit.

Apparently Ryan’s plan provides for a range of Medicare insurance options, some more comprehensive (& costly) than others, that Seniors may select from and either allow the government to fund exclusively (for limited care) or to supplement out of our own pockets (i.e., for varying degrees of superior care). A Mitch Daniels-type approach might improve upon this, but how much will it add to the deficit? I don’t want any plan that continues to kick the deficit can further down the road.

it does sound like a viable solution. i hope there is a great deal of consideration given to it. i am 57 and worried what direction this will all go. while i am not looking for anyone to take care of me - we boomers have always been the contributors - i do worry about what would happen in the event of a really serious illness or injury. thanks, dick. i love the lunch videos!

The Dems wanted the Reps to commit suicide by coming out with an aggressive budget plan, including Medicare and the GOP took the bait. Ryan was very coregeous, but premature. People want solutions, as long as their pocketbooks are not affected and the Dems are masters at exploiting this sentiment. When will the Reps. learn? Besides your idea, there has to be cost transparency at the hospitals. Charging $80 for one aspirin because Madicare will pay for it is fraud and they get away with it!

Thanks Dick, excellent idea. This is what I was thinking that Medicare still needed some sort of safety net for catastrophic illness and this would be the solution all the while providing some consumer based decision making in health care consumption which is what we totally lack today and one reason why health care costs run out of control as it is currently an all you can eat system.

Like so many, Dick does not correctly understand Paul Ryan's proposal. It is decidedly NOT that "the gov't will give you a certain amount of money and you go buy your insurance". It is more like what I have through work right now - my company tells me how much money they will contribute to the health care coverage I select from the menu of options they have decided to make available to me. Ryan's plan is like that for Medicare. Pick from a menu of plans, gov't kicks in $x, you pay any difference

Good thinking! Another idea, along the line of incentivizing healthy living... For 40 years my family of 6 lived w/o health insurance of any kind. We simply rolled up our sleeves and stayed healthy! Same as doing w/o car insurance for the same period; we just didn't have accidents! That's why I prefer the Ryan plan. I like the idea of encouraging folks to take responsibility for their own good health. With Google, anyone an learn how to treat themselves better! Proper incentives help!

I want the same medical coverage and support that the politicians in congress get. Surely I work as hard as they do – ah. But I guess that isn’t going to happen because they create the laws telling me what choices I have. Those in the beltway call this representative democracy; they have, I don’t and it doesn’t matter how unfair I think this is.
