It was nice to see and hear the epic "$299" announcement for the first time. Such 90's nostalgia! The first time I saw a picture of the PlayStation was when I flipped through an issue of TV Guide before my Television Production class started.

Man...to think that for 6-7 years after this keynote, the original Playstation would literally change the video game industry. Sony, developers and consumers (especially me) were up for a great time in gaming history.

The psone was such an awesome system... but honestly I think sony just got VERY lucky because both Sega and Nintendo fucked up their hardware so badly that third parties would be crazy to want to develop for them over the psone. Both other consoles were more powerful yes but the sega saturns hardware was impossible to develop for because it was put together so poorly and nintendo used cartridges basically making it VERY hard to fit games on, They couldnt be anymore than like, 32mb or so.

@walkerctranger Actually, Sega under-estimated the popularity if 3D games over Sprites and 2D. They had 3rd party support. Nintendo on the other hand fearful of piracy issues stuck with cartridges too long, that why Square left them early because they could put more of a story and other content on CD-ROM for less money than putting it on cartridges. Sega's 3rd party ports were usually inferior that's why Sega killed it early in favor of the Dreamcast. 3DO and Jaguar never had a chance.

They made sure not to show the long clips of the games, so that nobody would recognize the ugliness of the first games. Many CG also... Sony started lying from the launch of the first console. The apogee was when they showed CG bullshit of KZ2 and said it's real gameplay.

PS1 launch titles were some of the most mind-boggling I ever saw, more than I can say about the 360 and PS3 launches, just PS2 games with beefy graphics. I guess you never knew what it was like to go from Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter to Toshinden/Tekken.

@krimoz911 I think the original launch price was intended to be 399, but they were so hellbent on making Sega and the Saturn look like shit that they pulled out that little shock tactic, lol.

The PlayStation was indeed better, but Sony can suck it for shipping the launch models with plastic laser units just to reduce manufacturing costs.
