Some very nice moments. This is what i'm having played at my wedding in december. Woodwinds are WAY too loud the entire time, not to mention out of tune. Tubas and lowbrass (horns included) need to grow a pair. Ending was harsh, like they were all dying for breath even with that obnoxious pause. But reading that they only had one week to prepare...it was good for that! Way to go!
i'm playing 2nd clarinet on this at my school :) very beautiful and powerful song. we're playing it at a church as well. (not a very good oboe player in this vid, sorry)
Some players must know how to take their time with the music, typical of a slow, sustained, intense piece of music like this - this would help with the smudgy phrase transitions. And watch the tuning guys, that is certainly one way to kill a piece.
im using this video to practice with, with my flute. its pretty dull alone, you know what i mean? thanks for the vid, its been awesome practice. and u guys sounded hella nice!!!
In the scene this piece comes from, in "Lohengrin", the music is interrupted without any sort of satisfying ending, so there is no one "right" way to end any arrangement of the piece. I believe the one we hear most commonly is from a band arrangement by Lucien Cailliet.
These are not professional musicians. Indeed, the number of oboe players in Sweden is quite small. We have about 80 members in our organization which are 15 years or older. There are about 500 students of oboe at various levels in Sweden.
Ok, I was a little bit hard with my comment. Sorry for that and thanks for your explanation! I know it's so difficult to have a good sound when you are young with a oboe. Sorry
The Oboe blew me away(:

There are some very nice moments in this performance! With that being said...there are some moments that could definitely use some work.

There is always room for improvement. However, they had only one week and a lot of pieces so I think it went very well given the circumstances.

Hey Johantj, are you in this Swedish band?
It sounds beautiful. we're playing this song in my high school now.

No, I'm part of the management. It is a beautiful song.
johantj 4 years ago
it sure is. I've played it twice - in orchestra and band.
Just wondering though, when was the transcription written/copyrighted?

What a complete cop-out. They cut 4 of the last few measures out! TROMBONES!
What a distasteful conductor.
blankstare77 4 years ago
The band plays, of course, a transcription made by Mark H. Hindsley.
This orchestra met for the first time ten days before this concert was recorded. I think the conductor did a great job.

Poor oboe... pity for a national band... don't you have a better oboe in the whole country?

what the F
conducting with your left hand?
must be in Europe where they do everything backwards
RyaZila24 4 years ago
I don't think it actually makes a difference.
johantj 4 years ago
not really but everything the conductor conducts has to be mirrored
RyaZila24 4 years ago
Conducting left handed.... tsktsktsktsk.
