  • God i wish i couldve grown up in this era with such experimentation, and were bands required actual skill. Love the song. i was just born about 32 years late...

  • @bloodypleb Come down to Chicago, man! I'm 18 and I know how you feel.

Then again, Animal Collective's "Merriweather Post Pavilion"-new psychedelic music!

  • This version has much more (and better) energy than the CWB version! Chocolate Watchband has elaborate paisley production, but the WTP original is more of a psychedelic rave. Much stronger. Also love the version with Delphine's vocals.

  • @cheapomarx Definitely agree with you.

  • I was born in Hungary in 1979.....wrong time, wrong place :(

  • @mybabam ...just wrong mindset!

  • Cette intro est légendaire et diabolique! Je suis en transssse !

  • This is such a cool song! An unexpected find on my journey of cult music of the past!

  • Thanks a million, doglips1958! And, thanks to all of you who commented. It was a very tense song to play live, but I feel the recording turned out very well for 1966 technology.... I truly appreciate your kindness... Wayne Proctor (WTP)

  • @wethepeople1966 A somewhat curious discussion, generally you like the version best, you got to know first. As I started out my expedition into 60´s music on Youtube one of the most important finds was "in the past" as done by CWB, but it was definitely the SONG, that knocked me out. It has got something essential to tell about that era, it has become my 60´s theme-song, so I´m pleased that I get the chance to tell you! The song is great, but the Bouzuki-like guitarpart blows it over the Top.

  • @wethepeople1966 So, what is the meaning of the song?

  • Nice song. However I ll have to say that Delphines version is sexier...

  • Tommy Talton rocks!

  • great song... and great video you added... who cares about some dude who knows his nerdy 60's history. great song never the less

  • i <3 blacflag. thanks for posting these.

  • Heard a French (or maybe Belgian) version of this song last night, can't remember who the band here performing it... love this footage!!

  • I've been looking for a medley of the 60s, with images from that time (not ALL Vietnam either) of the people from anywhere and everywhere, with the sounds of those times. Your video is great, not QUITE what I'm looking for but loved it just the same and have forwarded it on ... to my facebook account. People read it! :-)

  • Oh this awesome!

  • First heard this "WTP"song on one of my "family vacations" to Fla when I was a 10 year old kid. A few years later the "CWB cover' was getting juke play along with a lot of ever popular bubble gum crap in Hayward Wis.('nuther family vacation)I insisted to my older cousins that I had heard a better version earlier in Fla., but WTF did this 12 year old know who was listening to whacked bands like King Crimson & Genesis. I dug up a 45 and was later vindicated... then came Camel & Gentle Giant etc.

  • i like your videos (o:

  • これって、日本人好みの曲だと思う

  • @mobyboy - i'll have to disagree with you there.

  • @blacflag I agree with you.This song is addictive.

  • @blacflag I'll side with you on this one, however, if I could, I would have either had one person sing this or grafted the CWB vocals on this version. I think that the CWB is too "produced", although it is still quite good.

Have you heard the "ye-ye" version of this song? It's We the People's with a woman named Delphine singing. It's called, "La fermeture éclair" ("The Zipper"?)

  • @gilgamess yeah, it is on here somewhere, in favourites, nice video

  • @blacflag

I love both bands, but it's not even close. WTP has the best version.

  • I have to disagree too. This is the original and best version. They have a great 2cd comp available called Mirror Of our Minds with hardly a dud track on it.

  • @mobyboy I have to disagree too. This is the original and best version. They have a great 2cd comp available called Mirror Of our Minds with hardly a dud track on it.

  • The CWB version wasn't really by the CWB, was it? Anyway, I like both versions.

  • @mobyboy

    you must be deaf

  • @mobyboy

You're deaf man, this is amazing and beats Chocolate Watchband's cover definitely!

  • @mobyboy No way! I love both bands, but WTP's version is better.

  • Check out the Sound Explosion [GR] cover from Teen Trash Vol.14, they nailed it as well

  • One of THEE best songs from the 60s,and that's saying ALOT!!!!

  • all of your music is great wayne, its lasted the distance.

  • super like/love!!!!!!

  • This song was great, its great now and will be too on 2050

  • I really like the sound of instruments, makes the song so happy and mellow, past, present or future, this song rocks !

  • This band made their own instrument, the Octachord. HOLY SH*T ! How cool is that ?!! And I thought that was just some lysergicized surf guitar being played in this song. This song fucking rules

  • love the "surf guitar goes lysergic" aspect in this We The People song and I didn't know it even existed until a couple of weeks ago; always thought it was a CWB tune.Chocolate Watchband's cover is good, but doesn't hold a candle to this puppy IMO. Additionally, this band ROCKS, (they had a handful of singles but never a full record). Their other songs KILL as well, especially "you burn me up and down" which gives this tune a real run for its money. If you're not in stunned after that 1, ur numb

  • Original has better vocals, cover has a better solo.

  • I want some more info on this band. What years were they around? What is their best album? And did they cover The Chocolate Watchband? Or was it the opposite? Great song..

  • chocolate watchband version is a cover, this is their song.

They didn't release an album, just 45s but their work is collected on many releases the most definitive is called Mirror of Our Minds released by Sundazed.

  • Starting at 2:09 that is Joey Heatherton

dancing. That gal had the sexiest pout in

    Hollywood.

  • * hey Cowboy.....so very kewl.....you guys were great.....love this.....

thanx for the send.....makes me smile

    * Cowboy * many hugzzzzz

  • That's a good question, but I have no idea where they got the tracks. Access to the original tapes could remove the voice tracks, & record their voices over ours. But, because of the cost involved, it's hard to fight. If WTP's songs ever make it into a funky hit movie, then it might be worth it to fight. But, I just have to be proud that someone cares enough to record our music.Thank you again, for expressing your love for it, too. It is truly appreciated... Wayne

  • thanks Wayne, really great to have some of the mystery solved on this song. I hope sundazed gets some royalties to you, I know a band member from New Colony Six who told me they didn't. Is there any chance you guys would ever have a reunion or is it not possible? Lots of 60s bands have pulled it off pretty well. Best wishes!

  • Thanks to all! Delphine didn't obtain permission from us to record it, however. It's a long story, but their laws are different from the US & difficult to "police." However, I am still astonished, that she (& others) wanted to record our stuff. In other words, even though no royalties are paid, I'm thankful the legacy continues. Thanks again to all who love our sound enough to record, play, and listen to us even now.You make me smile! Wayne Proctor, WTP

  • Hi Wayne, thanks for replying. The thing that puzzles me is how did they obtain your backing track?

What do you think of the Horrors lifting My Brother the Man for Count in Fives? I think the song is terrible and it's a shame they just took your track and didn't give We the People credit.

  • Wayne, we even heard it here in Canada..I got my copy from my sister who ordered it by mail back in the day!!!

    Thank you for your sounds!

    You still influence us today..

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!! WP

  • I think I was born two decades too early.... :-) Thanks for the beautiful comments about my song.... Wayne Proctor, WTP

  • thanks for the excellent music - - - video quality has dropped a bit over the year, i'll reload if it gets too bad, song is timeless though.......

  • I love we the people, the top band from Florida in my opinion. I can't get this song out of my head. If I could ask one thing I've been wondering for a long time- did you guys give permission to Delphine to record a version of this? I always wondered what the story was with that record. It uses your same backing track.

  • Thanks! Delphine didn't obtain permission from us to record it. It's a long story, but European laws are different from the US & very difficult to "police." However, that being said, I am still astonished, yet pleased that she (& others) even wanted to record our stuff. • @wethepeople1966 You guys were gods for making such a masterpiece as this. One of THEE best songs of the 60s!!!!!

  • @wethepeople1966 Wayne, you're my favorite garage songwriter, man ! you can't imagine the influence you have on my own guitar playing, here as a Belgian music lover. i wish i could write such out-of-time tunes like yours...

  • LOVE IT!!!!

  • love this psych-pop-gem!

  • Awesome. Predates the Velvet Underground, I think, but definitely an influence on them

  • Cool! Goodwork.

  • You always do such excellent

videos!! Is this vintage "Whisky A

Go Go" footage? Didn't I spot Joey

    Heatherton in there too?

  • yeah, there and gazzari's were definately the place to be...not sure if it is joey, looks like her and she has the moves, maybe

  • The chocolate watch band's cover of this is 'Fantastic'..but This 'the original' is always 'better'...esp the Strange 'Octachord' String instrument leading the Song!!

  • killer memories!! we the people played alot of parties and clubs i went to growing up in orlando, florida.

  • I love watching this video!

  • thanks, i still enjoy it, should have posted it hi-res.

  • i love these kind of music...24 and born way too late i guess.

I think "Dancing" wasn't invented yet though xD

    nice clip!

  • lol im 24 and i feel the exact same...i wuz born 2 decades or so too late

  • oh my god..that song fits to all my memories..in the past!!..the best time of my younger life!its like a hymn

  • Great song!!!

Where is the hippie sound coming from? What's the name of instrument?

Do you have anyone lyric to this song? I can't get some words.

  • I heard it was a balalaika, a russian instrument.

Delphine, a belgian singer, sang the same song in french in 1967. In french, the song is called "la fermeture éclair".

  • Thanks! I hear the French version years ago, and been looking for it ever since. But I didn't know what it was called.

    Thanks again.

  • It's an octochord.

  • it's actually a home made instrument the group called a octachord, supposedly looked like a mandolin.

  • always magical!

  • Wow! How did I miss out on this song for so long?

  • We the People = excellent garage

  • i love this song so mcuh!!!!!!!!!!!♥♥♥♥♥
