i think the sounds of the ride is a matter of taste in a way, later he used the pads on the toms, to me more his personal way to hear his music and create his sound and dynamic vision of rythm. but i love his purity in a dynamic connection.
TW used that riveted cymbal due the sparseness of the music of its self. in a big you have a lot more instruments to cover any space in the music. with this quintet they all needed somethign to give them a constant backgroud sound. thus a riveted ride ride. it was a purely genius move in my opinion. but all in all. this was my absolute favorite miles quintet. absolute masters of jazz.
The tune is "Footprints" and you find it on teh "Miles Smiles" Record...the whole video concert is from the DVD "Miles Davis Quintet - European Tour 1967" and can be ordered on AMAZON [UK IMPORT]
From reading Miles' autobiography and different interviews, I don't think Tony was afraid of anyone musically. He came right in and started giving poor George Coleman shit! But who knows. They got together initially pretty informally, I think at Miles' house, and just played together while Miles listened remotely in another room, I think, so it was probably pretty chill.
He thought Coleman was too clean a player. Tony liked to play with guys who were a bit more out there and willing to take extreme risks even if that meant making mistakes.
I know everyone commenting here is going to scream at me but I don't like Tony's sizzle ride at all. I wish he'd of used a ride w/out rivets. Or just a single rivet ride. It's a cymbal that should be used very rarely unless in a small room with a trio? What dya think. RIP Tony.
@ThoughtRidden It is the dirty backgrond buzz that is very bad. I believe because it is Tony W he is given the pass. But nonthelesss I think it is not best. Best to you. R
I agree. Sometimes around this period he used a ride w/o rivets, and I definitely prefer the sound. It's a taste issue though. I like tight and clean more than loose and dirty
I feel the same way, thought I think this particular splashy ride might owe a little to the recording as well. My favorite recorded Tony rides would be right around 64-65; like "4 and More" and the Plugged Nickel stuff. Like you said, no rivets, nice and dry.
@ronoman88 Normally sizzle rides help to fulfill the purpose of the ride cymbal in playing certain kinds of jazz. Unless you just plain don't like sizzles, you might get a better perspective seeing drumming like this live.
@TingThing09 With all due respect I've played 48yrs and I can look back at this with the upmost objectivity. the sizzle was a new experiment for that time that now in retrospect DOESN"T work. It ends up being a musical distraction.
Especially with K's. It's a bad idea that got popular and stayed on passed its time. I'll go one step beyond outspoken as well saying ride cyms in general are soo extremely ltd in application I don't use them at all.Best thoughts to all reading
Thank you for posting this. I've always wanted to see video from "this" Miles Davis quintet. Honestly, I just wanted to see Tony playing, specially that ride cymbal. SWEET!!!
I'm sorry but Tony williams shits on Bonham. And I like Bonham but really? TW is on a whole other level....

Live and play well enough to be called a legend, then you can critique what choice of cymbal to play.

What thatsmypeanuts says about riveted rides is true for both women and rides, its better to be tight and clean instead of loose and dirty, ya dig?

@jjcj123
i like my ride dry, i don't know if i'd say the same about women....

polyrhythmic in a truer sense less attachment to the one - two of the others.....creating a state of mystique and wonder some of the best ever

I love the ride. It gives such a nice, dirty background buzz.
ThoughtRidden 4 years ago 2
@ThoughtRidden "Dirty background buzz" is why they are awful. Cymbals when as good as K's don't need it.

He also adds that the other guys weren't too bad.
