the Aerotrain had nice riding qualities considering that the usual commuter trains were really old at the time LOL. Where I rode it had several stops close together, so I never experienced it at any speed.
@boilerbob7 What was the AeroTrain like to ride? Comfort? Ride quality? Interior noise? Just curious. It seems like the four wheel trucks and bolted rail would not be a good match.
Wow, nice to see the Olypian Hiawatha! In my eyes one of the most unique streamliners in the USA. Too bad MILW started repainting the cars into UP yellow, I think with the MILW orange and maroon the train looked really top of class.
@GeileSexyZeiten I remember riding the Hiawatha when it was new, with the matching Fairbanks-Morse diesels trimmed in chrome, and a really exotic observation car. It was like a fine hotel that went places. It was indeed a very striking color scheme, and for years the management would not allow cars of any other railroad to be used in the consist. Sad that poor management decisions (Ending the electrification right before the Iran oil embargo!) put the railroad into bankruptcy.
1. Shots were of the Rock Island Aero Train being pulled out of LaSalle St. Station.
2. Shot was of Milwaukee Rd. southbound entering Union Station. From the mix of cars in orange/maroon and UP Armor yellow/Harbor Mist grey schemes, I'd guess it's not long after the CMStP&P took over the City streamliners from the North Western in 1956. 1957? They were all painted in UP colors soon after that.
VERY cool stuff! Well done!!!

I remember the Aerotrain ending up being a commuter train on the Blue Island branch. I rode it several times.
