You picked a spectacular song as tribute for M.B. On ballads his tone takes on great warmth that is missed on breakneck tempos (witness the haunting ballad "Heather" from B. Cobham's "Crosswinds" album). Thanks, you could not have done a better job on this video paean to a defining master of tenor sax.
Thanks for posting this gem. Mike's playing has inspired so many musicians, whether they play saxophone or not. He and Bill Evans (piano) - the great changemakers of modern jazz, who did not lose the point of what music was about.
He's so great, RIP Michael. HEY EVERYONE, I just found this piano player who is completely amazing. Search for "Long vent: Improv on Piano." My jaw dropped.
I have always felt that God himself placed His hand on Michael Brecker and said "You will be the finest saxophone player there has ever been." I think that both Bird and Coltrane would have been awed by his sheer talent and diversity: chops that allowed him to kill any be-bop tune at any speed CREATIVELY (no "tricks"), and yet play a ballad -- a solo so inspired it's as though it came straight from heaven for all to hear...
Take care Mr. Brecker ----- Pilgrimage ---- Mike's last album ---- is awesome and beyond words ----
