When I was a kid, my dad always said he liked the boat ride to Boblo better than any of the rides there. I thought that was the stupidest thing a person could say, and made no sense whatsoever. I'm 35 now and I remember the boat ride more clearly and with more fondness than anything else about it.
It's funny when your old man turns out to be right.
I remember going here back when I was 3yrs old...back in 87'.....It was my first trip to an amusement park...I so wish it was still here. I would have loved to go there as an adult. But still great memories
my uncles were the owners of boblo Island and the boats. But they sold it before I was born. I have never been on the island but I have been on the ste. claire.
i'm only 12 and my parents always tell me about boblo island when they were little, because we live in Windsor and it is directly across from Detroit, and they would go there in the summer. Another cool thing is that my family's construction company helped build the flume ride!
I loved this place when I was a kid - it's a shame that it ended up closing in 1993... I was devastated when I found out. This commerical brings back some memories - I do remember seeing this on TV in the late 80's - think this came out right before the Nightmare was introduced.
I remember Boblo. God that place was fun. The rides where OK (Cedar Pointe was/is much better) The best part was the boat ride. I loved it. For awhile in the 90's after Boblo Island itself was closed down I think they had booze cruises on the Detroit river. Then I remember hearing something about wanting to build a casino on the Island. The Detroit area has lost so much. I bearly recongize it when I go back to visit family that still lives there.
We used to go to Boblo every summer when I went to grade school (Presentation on Meyers and Pembroke) and the boat trip was like going to some magical Willy Wonkaish land. With seagulls following the boat. In fact, where on the map WAS Boblo exactly?
I remember going at least once with my mother, sister and her kids. Had to be in the 80's sometime. Too bad this closed. It was a great place. In Sandusky at the Merry-Go-Round Museum they have an animal or two from the Merry-go-round from Boblo. That brough back a lot of memories when I took my kids to that museum last year.
why does everyone keep using the word magical? copy cats!lol but anyway ,yes it closed in 93 now someone has houses non it! so sad .now detroit is considered the worst city in america! shame, because it had sooo much and now everythings gone!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, I miss that! The boat ride back was always fun! We had a pretty big family and didn't have much money so we didn't get the big summer vacations but we always made it to Boblo every summer.
If you like that one you should hear the bob marley song they turned into a boblo jingle. Too bad I only heard that one ONCE on the radio back in the 80's. If anyone has it let me know, I want a copy!
The Boblo boat, I remember being afraid the boat would sink and we would have to swim in that scary ass river with who knows what mutants living under the surface.. result of the 100 years of industrial waste
I worked on Bob-lo at the hight of its popularity back in the mid-80's. It was the best job a teenager could have ever had! I really miss having an amusement park so close by! Too bad it's gone!
Blaming blacks is the simple answer. But, the more complex answer is, that society has created that monster. Not just in Detroit, but, all over north america. There are many uneducated blacks who live in ghettos. Society has chosen to keep blacks and other minorities under their thumb with hand outs. There's the war on crime, and the war on drugs but, you'll never see the war on poverty. Place the blame 'squarely' where it belongs. Oh and don't forget the secret masonic handshake.
The thing people don't realize is; The fact that these people are not in it just to get ahead, they are in it to keep everyone else down while they trample them under foot getting ahead.
Greed, materialism and deception are their driving forces.
I lived for summers back in my childhood days. Boblo was the place to be and me and my friends wore matching outfits while those white sailor hats. The boat ride over was the best because the second floor was nothing but a dance contest. Thanks for the great memories!!
I STILL MISS THE ISLAND TOO. But we still have the S.S. Ste Claire to see. She it being rebuilt to ride the river again. Last weekend I spent both days helping out it was a blast.
I LOVED that place as a kid!!! We used to go in my Brownie troop every year!! Everytime I hear that song I think of that commerical. Now the island is all multi million dollar homes. I still have the patch they show at the end on my Brownie sash, and im 27 years old!! lol Thanks for uploading!!
Hey, summer must be coming of the Boblo commercial is on! Those were the days. The boatride was almost as fun as the park itself. I remember the pulsing sound coming from the dancehall, the smell of food in the air, the lights of Downtown Detroit approaching as the ride neared the end. Ah...! Thanks for posting this video!
Man the feeling I used to get when they started running that commercial in the Spring time....Man i couldn't wait to go. Anybody who's ever been there knows that you always found a little girlfriend or boyfriend on the boat ride there...spend all day together ride the boat home together dancing. fall in love and two weeks later do it all again!
At least we still have the 2 "Bob-Lo Boats" the S.S. Ste Claire shown in the end of the video is being renovated and will once again run on the detroit river. The ship was down in detroit over the summer at Tricentennial Park on the river front for tours. It was GREAT being back on the old girl again. I went down there almost everyweekend to see her and the work that had been done during the past week. Can't wait for late spring to get back onboard again.
I went to Bob-Lo today. They are building homes and condos there and turning it into a second home/resort area. Looks pretty cool. No rides left though.
They say the demise of the Island were our ignorant Detroiters acting Fools on the boat (particularly after the Riots). They stopped the Boat Rides in the 80s but the Park remained open because you could drive to it but it was so far away that people stopped going, they lost revenue and the park closed.
I have to admit I miss Boblo Island and the boats. It's great seeing the ad again it brings back so many memorys thankyou to the person who posted it. I've played this over 30 times so far. Is there anyway of getting a copy? Thank's again, Now I have to go to the store and get a "Faygo Red Pop or Rock&Rye".
there will never be another theme park like this one because the next time someone looks for an island to build on there will be large houses already on it and the land will be worth way to much money to get started.
Thanks....Check this out. Here is a little known Boblo secret. All three Roller coasters that were in Boblo until 1994 are still operating today! the Sky Streak is in Mexico, the Screamer is in Vancouver, and the Nightmare is in Texas. What a trip that would be.

Boblo Island, Tiger Stadium and drive in movies! Man! what fun I had as a kid. It is a shame today's kids can't experience it. Oh well, at least we have Wal-Marts and Walgreens[ which replaced drive ins] and condos[ which is what replaced Boblo] and Comerica Park....well you know the rest!
The F/W is located in an industrial area and *not* a residential/retail area, so Wally World is not likely to want that property. Charles Schaeffer the owner/co-manager is 87 now(!) and certainly won't be able to keep operating the place operating forever(regrettably).
87? That's what worries me! That is one reason why so many drive ins are gone. The people that owned them retired or passed on, leaving their kids to sell to the highest bidder.
There was a proposal to build a multiple screen drive at the Michigan State fairgrounds but that got shot down.
Talk about old school....i miss this place...the better version of Cedar Point
