I think the mountain climber is moved with a crank that Roger is turning behind the board. I saw a top view of the game in a photo on the web once, and I saw that the mountain climber is connected to a chain that lays on the top of the mountain. Maybe the crank wasn't on tight enough that day and Roger lost control of the mountain climber.

This is the only game on "The Price is Right" that I like it when the contestents loose because I like watching the climber fall off the cliff.
