  • I also might add that this is such a powerful movie.

  • The more I watch this movie the more this is believable. I'm wondering if this can really happen. We only use 10% of our brains anyways. Who's to say that someone can't develop psychokinesis powers to the point where they can make pure power out of nothing or move things with their minds! There's already documented incidents where some people can move things just by thinking about it. And with today's and tomorrow's technological advances who's to say we can't make a solid laser beam!

  • wow this movie was amazing i loved every second of it! you guys did an absolutely amazing job! thank you for posting this for us to watch <3

  • I met Derek once he was a really cool guy. We were both from the same areas in New York, our home towns only a few miles apart he was an awesome guy and very smart. it was really upsetting when i heard about the accident.

  • This is a great movie!!! The lovie dovie-ness was a bit over the top though. They are so stuck on LOVE!!! Dark side powers!!!! Woot!!! But why do all Sith have a ego trip with the whole riddle talk? LOL Great movie guys!

  • pixel

  • i just found out that derek lake passed away! =(

I remember watching this and thinking this guy has lots of potential!

Its such a shame that he was taken so early in life =(

  • WHY does this fanfilm not get seen more. I'll never know, and I posted like 2 years ago. It's a bloody shame.

If you're watching... share this video with others!!

  • This is a great little movie - a low budget, amateur produciton, but an engaging story.

The movie can also be downloaded at the Internet Archive.

  • I'm only halfway through this... and this is actually pretty damn good.

  • what does t.j. say at 16:20 on the hood of nick's car before saying, "could you please open your drunk? I mean...trunk?" and what is that from? GREAT MOVIE

  • The sound and visuals lose sync. Is there any way you could repost this with them matched back up together? It's hard to watch when the audio and visuals don't match.

  • amazing. absolutely awesome.

  • Fucking sweet. Low budget, actors don't have the chops but it all get's pulled off anyway. Really awesome.

  • PRETTY DAMN EPIC MOVIE!!!

  • Is there any way I can download a copy of this video, and if so, where can I find it?

  • @ChanneltoSubscribe

To Know a Jedi can be downloaded on the Internet Archive web site.

  • ROFL I never noticed this before.

17:30 "Can I put it in her butt?"

  • Best movie on youtube, BY FAR.

  • Agreed, Cody, watching from the POV of a Jedi Realist does change the way you see this movie.

It makes me wonder if we have our approach to the Force all wrong. Maybe we really should use emotions...

  • A very good movie, especially when your watching this from the view point of someone who wants to be a real life Jedi. It shows how easy it can be to fall to the dark side. At the Real Jedi Knights a good friend of mine linked this video in a topic, I'm very glad he did. I was one of the 20k people that were able to see Derek Lake's mastery. 5/5, magnificent. R.I.P Derek Lake.

  • very good movie i loved it makes me wonder

  • I really liked this movie even though I was cooped up in my basement for an hour and a half watching it. It's a really cool idea: what if the force was real. Awesome movie. One thing that I got a little sick of was that they said the "F" word in every sentence. I also hated how the audio got more and more out of sync. I'm sorry about Derek. What happened?

  • without a doubt, a very cool movie!

  • Wow that was truely brilliant, you can really see the love and effort that was put into this, it is such a shame that Derek lost his life. This shows just how much potential that he really had.

  • "Don't fear it, Nick. It'll only set you free!"

Reference to the Code of the Sith, eh?

It's a shame the audio is out of sync.

  • Hmm.. I think half the budget was for booze in the party scene lol, but man this was an awesome flick!

  • lol, ya, this movie owns)))

  • that was good now i just got to watch it i skimmed through it god that was good

  • Will looks a lot like Luke Skywalker.

  • ya.

  • I havn't seen this vid in about a year, still awesome.

  • at 38:00 (dark side alarm!)

  • george lucas would be jelous truly my favorite

  • iam also in productions of an indie film right now and i was wondering if it would be copywright if i used the ending speech at the funeral in it?

  • Very well made movie, especially considering their budget as well as their position (being a film STUDENT, and not an actual director/producer/etc).

    Will watch again.

    And again.

    And possibly again.

    ;)

  • OMFG this movie rocks!

  • omg a kid from our school mad this. is the kid from horseheads ny

  • Yes. He went to Horseheads High School, and had a very bright future lined up for him.

  • so its been like 2 years and only 18000 views? ppl gotta start linking this shit

  • YO!

  • incredible movie, i am greatly impressed, one of the best low-budget independent films i have ever seen... my condolences, much luck!

  • Rest in peace, Derek.

  • i like the whole spider-man reference when he's tryin to use the force on his light saber

  • greatest movie ever

  • dam that was worth an hour great vid R.I.P derek

  • I still love this video.

  • grat vid so it first time a couple of yeras ago had to watch agian

  • How the heck was you able to upload a movie longer than 10 minutes.

    Hmmm...

  • It was uploaded along time ago back when youtube just started.

  • Great plot, Great character changes, Perfect job on the film!

  • R.I.P derek but sweet vid!!

  • Wow, great effort guys you deserve it.

    RIP Derek

  • great video and might aswell be a film its nearly 2 hours long

    lol

  • I have commented before on this video, but... all I can say is... it deserves ALOT more than 12,000 views.

I certainly hope someday more people can view it--especially SW fans. This really was an exceptional piece of work... WHATever your feelings on cursing or the style chosen, or even if you think making a movie of this caliber (and LENGTH!!!) is magically *EASY* for $800... or even $8000. Derek Lake did a wonderful job, and... it's still disheartening to me that he died. RIP. MTFBWY. :)

  • All I've gotta say is this movie is the best, good work to the whole crew, I used to have it but I lost it I think it's still on the web somewhere for dl... google it

  • hi can i ask were you got the file from i would really like to download it if i could

  • @kiriyouace

Replying to a pretty old message here, but what the heck.

I posted a copy of "To Know a Jedi" on the Internet Archive. You shold be able to download it from there if you're still looking for it.

  • This young Jedi is trailing dangerously close to the dark side it seems.

  • It is the better side...

  • It is the better side...

  • i see now what is all really about . hyperdermic syringe. if this was real then the "Star Wars" killed them all. think about it. if they never new about it then i would never have happened. i real life it is the same. man hunt for example. an insiration to all film makers and my self. remember him forever!. Teatoe films out.

  • awsome only thing that would make it the best star wars thing would to be maybe force ghosts at the end and say thanks for something

  • Most awesome fanfilm ever!!!

if anyone is interested to get the 2 music files they used for the ending and the trailer,

I have them both, so if you want, just add "jaroon5 at hotmail dot com" or "banzaitv at live dot nl"

  • Watched it all. Favorited. 5 Stars. Bravo.

  • Great movie, heard of it for a while and lived up to and beyond. I'm glad you posted it.

  • this shit is fucking cool!

  • I watched about 1 min of this shit and decided to end my life - the JEDI WAY!

  • you let a sith kill you like obi-one

  • I actually went to school with Derek (School of Visual Arts In NYC) and was able to go to the screening of this film. He didn't die in a car accident though, but was riding his bike and got hit by a car in the Lower East Side. He was a really gifted kid and had a lot of potential. This film definitley showed what he was capable of.

  • Thus meaning he died in a car accident since the accident involved a what? Oh, yeah. Car. Bravo.

Other than that, this is amazing.

  • that was really good

  • ep.2 sucked!

  • the lightsaber fight when the 5 guys were ganna start to fight it was cool whrn they turned on thier sabers, and it was sad, i like the music in the end, sounds sad, wats the name of it?

  • id like to say, ive watched ten minutes, and already it is awesome... and i reckon derek is an extremely talented young man. Somethings become better than they really are after death, but this is just a stunning movie. Thank you Derek.

    -Rizza-

  • i live in that town

  • As far as I'm concerned... this film just does NOT get enough hits!

It really should be seen more by folks out there who enjoy saber movies and such...

    --Novastar

  • That was fantastic! Absolutly amazing!

  • SOOOOOOO BIG

  • GREAT Movie!

  • Oh... my... GOD!!!! This movie was, I'm speechless. Intense, emotional, words cant describe it. Period. I, like everyone involved in the making and viewers alike, hope that Derek knows how great of a movie this is. He'll be one of my favorite directors now and always. Thank you Derek, for making what I think is one of the best movies to grace this earth.

  • I know it sound so cliche, but words cannot say near enough about this movie. I've seen it so many times before. One of the absolute best movies I've ever seen, and will ever see. Brilliant in so many ways. I hate saying "RIP Derek" because I really didn't know him. Still, I know this movie as a testament to an extremely gifted young man. It's a terrible shame. Watch this. Please. It's the least we can do to honor him.

  • damn... too bad he's not around anymore. he would have gone on to make some amazing movies.

  • ahahah I nearly peed my pants at the spiderman reference.

  • ok first of all yes u can stop a saber u could make the exterior of the blade plasma wrapped around titanium rods that can be compressed into the hilt by the push of a simple button... oh and for all u film makers and gangstas out there... i dont have ur mony lol

  • best fanfilm out there im gonna dedicate mine to this

  • sob* that was awsome! a tear jurker :;(

  • to bad its not possible to make a saber. The thing is when you powered a saber the laser isn't possible to stop itself so the blade would just go one forever and go through whats ever in its way

  • Wow wow wow holy that was a great MOVIE wow and it was a movie wow

  • wow..that was a great movie..too bad there aren't more like it..i feel like hollywood is ruining the whole scene, hiding some of the greats, and..ugh..i could rant..i always feel this way nearly everytime i watch any movie..good or bad..because of the bad ones..but this movie was great, with or without the low budget..wish i could say more, but i don't want to take up tons of space..thanks

  • LOLOLOLOL I LAUGHED SO HARD

great move watched 5 minutes of it

  • wow that is one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life.

    God I allmost cried!!!

great movie keep up the good work.

  • ummm learn 2 read the guys dead kinda hard to keep up the good work.

  • This is a great movie. Requesqat in pacem Derek Lake.

  • Wow.. truly a great movie. You should be very proud of yourselves. RIP Derek Lake.

  • Wow....

  • You should upload this to stage6(dot)divx(dot)com too. :D

  • amazing,purely amazing!

  • How can anyone rate this less than a 5 star vid?

    Excellent! RIP Derek

  • lol

"fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, and fuck you."

    haha what a fucking g

  • if any of u know any 1 that has this vid can u please ask them to send this movie to me at LIL_GANGSTA69_THUG@hotmail dot c o m

  • That's just absolutely beautiful of a film, a damn shame he isn't able to make more.

  • great movie it inspires me to make one myself

  • nerd fight!

  • its a shame, would've grown up to be great director someday, awsome movie, R.I.P Derek Lake

  • greatest lightsaber video ive ever seen the detail was amazing and the only problem wasnt anyones fault, it was just that after about 20 minutes youtube messes up the sound sync and looks like a japanese film, i suggest you put the movie in seperate parts,

i didnt know him but derek was a great director and writer RIP

  • this is by far the best non-official starwars movie ive ever seen. Its a tragity Derek (even tho i never knew him) passed at such a young age. He was a VERY talented movie writer/director/actor

RIP to Derek and my condolances to his friends and family, i cant imagine the loss you must feel

  • I LOVED IT, WILL IS AWSOME WHEN HE TURNS DARKSIDE! i think the cussing made it more real and made it more intense, RIP derek u would have made great movies!

  • The ending did give kind of a plot hole since there were four or five other blades out there, but despite that, good film.

  • Movie~ Was pretty amazing

    Music~ Awkward..

    Cast~ Amazing

overall this movie was really good! Some parts were really slow and the ending kinda sucked. Nick, Derek, and Will.... Hot! The theme was cool! I would have never thought of it! I loved how I yelling at my computer,"He isn't a Jedi! He is a freaking sith!!!"

    I LOVED this movie!

  • Also... The Language... to much FUCK and SHIT ect.

  • An amazing movie.I enjoyed every minute of it.A great achievement.Rest in peace Derek Lake.

  • pretty cool amateur movie.

  • yo i love this jedi movie papaburrrrr RIP DEREK

  • wow this movie was very good. I loved the story line, Derek you were a great film maker. I'm sorry we lost we man.

  • for all who watched it the video takes place in parts of horseheads NY near the elmira-corning area. derek was a great director and i only wish his work could go on.

  • and give that spoon a lick

  • what?

  • that was probably the best indie film I have ever seen. and I saw some places that i have been to. (use to live in NY)

I wish i could have known Derek. the world has lost a verry good person. just one question, how did he die? not trying to be disrespectful, just wondering.

  • read the description

  • amazing, i wish Derek was still around to make more incredible movies like this

  • Amazing. But was Derek the one whose dog died? I wasn't sure..:|

    R.I.P Derek.

  • No that was Semore (or however you spell it) who had his dog die, he's the guy who you first see under the car doing work on it.

  • nope, the dog was from (I'm not sure his name is Tyler) the guy who was fixing his car (7:53),

  • I'm so sorry to hear he passed away. Very good work here.

  • Do you know what kind of camera he used? I'm looking at making a movie like this, but I can't find a camera that's not $2000, with the proper quality settings. Thanks!

  • i love this movie if you made a DVD i would buy it

  • Err Rest in Peace* is what I meant.

  • But there is too much language.

  • Rest in Piece Derek Lake, you made an incredible movie.

  • best movie ever. i freakin loved it....but...too much language...and....if derek was around....i would encourage him to make a sequel...RIP buddy

  • if there wasnt so much language it would be pwnage

  • Awsome. RIP

  • Awesome! Interesting camera angles, a lot was accomplished with creative editing. The score and acting were engaging for the most part (which you can't say for many big-budget movies) and there was character development & background, both integral to the plot.

    Well done, Derek Lake

  • That was FANtastic. Especially for something so low-budget. The script and acting were absolutely great--I mean, look at the horrible acting in most of the big "effects" fan films! This trumps them all.

Brilliant work, Derek Lake. I'm sure there is some reason why he had to be... well... on his way to somewhere else. :) Godspeed.

  • Awesome movie. Best I've seen in a long time, even if there was too much language. RIP buddy

  • This is so awesome Derek. RIP buddy. Best movie I've seen in quite a while, even if there was too much language.

  • Damn I cant belive I watched the whole thing, It was a good movie, but I couldnt help but feel the whole thing was really cliche', there wasnt anything in it we havent seen in other movies, as soon as I saw the dock I knew exactly what the last clip was going to be, so dissapointed in its predictability xXx

  • gayjedi, you are a disrespectful moron. Rot in your gayness.

  • How is he disrespectful? He expressed his genuine opinion. Derek is already part of the Force, he would want to hear this...

  • This is a great movie. I hope a lot more people will see Derek's movie seeing that filming and directing was his life's choice. RIP Derek.

  • very good i loved it! but as if you would throw a reall working light sabre away lol still excellant all the same! well done derek you had a true telant for this. r.i.p

  • take into account though, the pain it caused the "crew" and the familys... it distroyed the group

I would have throwen it in the lake too

  • Too much language. Thank You.

  • if only derek was alive.... he'd be the best director in the world. hope he's having a good time in heaven

  • this an ok vidoe i did not thank that he will do it but he did well that is cool

  • That was really well done! That was sick, though, what he did to his friends and family. Lots of morals in the story.

  • best movie ever on youtube R.I.P Derek

  • wow that was like the best movie i ever seen on youtube great job rip derek

  • wow this movie is wicked good

  • how old was derek?

(with sincere respect for the departed) I really hope there's an afterlife because I want to see the directors commentary.

this man was a true artist and was going to be the next great.

Someone should contact Lucas and see if he has a heart enough to help distrubte this.

  • lol you go ahead and give him a call, Derek was 19.

  • The person who is called Derek has my respect. As a young film student i feel that this is something special. I have only made small pieces of film (check my videos). To be able to make a full-length picture film is amazing. I hope someday to make it in the media industry. Thankyou for posting.

  • I already have contacted george. he said he would review the movie and get in tuch with thoughs that helped with the making to see what can be done

  • Unbelievable.

    Amazingly written piece.

    Thanks

  • No understatement ... the best fanfilm to date.

  • To this day I still look back at this project as one of my favorites both creatively and influential in my current work in action films. But more than any of that, this work stands as a testament to a man who I will always have the honor of calling my friend.

  • The first film project I had the pleasure to work on with Derek.the two fight scenes were shot last, back to back for 36 hours straight in heat and lack of sleep. Even though tempers were high, Derek was able to pull us all together for the final push to get the shot done.Derek wasn't just an amazing artist; he was an amazing person who had the amazing ability to bring out the best in the people he worked with.

  • est ce qu'il y est en francais

    ???

  • Best fanfilm i have ever seen.

  • Best fanfilm I have ever seen in my entire life, the plot was awesome and the music and effects were even better, this is better than most films out there in hollywood, good job, and R.I.P Derek, you started something good, too bad it had to end so soon

  • It's sad that Derek's gone, but I'm grateful for the work he left behind. This is one of my favorite films, fanfilm or not.

I'm also grateful he gave me permission to do a spin-off. I really hope it lives up to his standards.

    -Vaportrail

  • thank you for posting this. Derek was my friend and neighbor when he was working on this film. I miss havin cigarettes with him in the wee hours of the night when no one else was up.

luckily he was editing this, you did an awesome job buddy. i didn't get to see the finished film until now. miss ya bud.

    robbie

  • thank you for this. derek was my neighbor when he was editing this, i miss our cigarette breaks in the wee hours of the night. this is the first time i got to see the whole thing finished. thanks again.

  • I'm so glad I finaly got the chance to see this movie, it's brilliant, I love the storyline the concept everything!

Such a shame Derek died he would have made a brilliant film maker.

  • This is very incredible, I saved it to favorites!

  • thats a special kind of awesome

  • Isnt it? its such a shame that derek died. i hope that me puting this movie on youtube, will help him live forever in its essence.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Derek was truly gifted and such an incredible person. I'm so sad. He was brilliant! Please rate the film, everyone!

  • Anything to do a great film & a great film maker justice.

  • Derek made this film for under $800 with one camera when he was 19 years old, between his freshman and sophomore years in film school. Following his tragic accident, and a high demand for this now-cult classic, one of the fans of the film has generously posted it here in its entirity. This film uses the intellectual property of Lucasfilm, Ltd. and, consequently, it is illegal for it to generate revenue in any way.
