Its partly historical. Jews were persecuted regardless of whether they believe in judaism. In Nazi Germany, if your grandmother was a jew, you were a jew. Thats why they were given protection as a race. Islam however is no different to christianity in its need for protection under the law.

freedom of speech is meant to create consensus and make sure that every voice is heard and not ignored in democratic society. the perfect way to undermine consensus is by something that serves no purpose other than to offend. this is actually undermining the purpose of free speech. freedom of speech then becomes nothing more than petty insult and revenge.

Judaism is different. It is viewed as a race under the law for good reasons.
Its partly historical. Jews were persecuted regardless of whether they believe in judaism. In Nazi Germany, if your grandmother was a jew, you were a jew. Thats why they were given protection as a race. Islam however is no different to christianity in its need for protection under the law.

There's a big difference between lampooning a political figure like, say, GEORGE DUBYA BUSH, as a shall we say, SHAVEN CHIMP ;). It's ANOTHER thing to portray a religious icon in a bad light. There is a skit from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" that I find offensive. It has a lot of crucified guys all singing about the positive side of things.

Pardon me: This is just so much bs. Neither Sweden or Denmark have laws criminalizing holocaust denial. (Neither does the UK or other countries btw). ((Germany and Austria have - for obvious reasons))

The story about holocaust denial is put out there by a.o. imams who dont know anything about the societies they live in and dont speak the language. Not only are the nazis legal - they have their own radio stations, where they happily deny the holocaust. Which is why they only get 800 votes.

Just a small anecdote. I saw a press conference where an imam in Copenhagen protested the first moohammed cartoons. "Would the danes" he asked. "accept that someone made fun of the queen".
He had lived in Denmark for 20 years and not even discovered that any stand-up with respect for himself does just that.
