I believe newcomers should always start out with software and a cheap midi keyboard. Why? This is where you learn the basics. Also upgrading from something cheap will cost you much less. Knowing what what you have can do makes it easier for you to see where you want to go, musically and equipment wise. Buying something for a grand finding out you like the MV better is a waste of money. Good luck man.
