He forgot to mention to step into the rotation at the end. The majority of moves in Aikido have their force stemming from the lower body's movements. Taking a few small steps like he did at the final push is going to do close to nothing. If you don't believe me, look at some other Aikido moves. It's all in the steps.
I think this video is mainly intended as reference for aikido students prepping for a test -- not as independent self-defense instruction. Would a nikyo lock, or aikido more generally, be useful in an MMA cage match? I can't imagine that the video instructor cares about this. Me, I think of aikido as being more relevant to restraining an angry teen-ager without harm, rather than to fighting an MMA cage match. Which is more practical in "real life"? Depends on who you are, I guess.
If these techniques worked, they could beat brazillian Jiu Jitsu and no holds barred fighters. So far, aikido 0, BJJ....I can't count that high. It's pretty, but the fighting style won't work well against BJJ
Actually this technique works very effectively in the real world when executed with SOLID and QUICK technique. I have used this on to many occasions to count as an executive/celebrity body guard and bouncer. :)
i agre with the people saying this wouldnt work in a fight. but them people need to realise that this move is like the karate equivilent of katas. its gradeing traing thats all. the move becomes something quite different and direct when its done for self defence.
This would only work for real if you could do it in one fluid motion before his forward momentum stops as I think your using that to create the wrap around effect that torques him downward
Thanks for posting. I think these defenses are good against non-committal "hey buddy what's your problem?" types of 'attacks'. But whern the attacker is right in your face and perhaps tries to headbutt you, these stand little chance of working due to almost no space, especially with a wall behind you. We trained these attacks with Aikido black belt, some pretty tough, and there was a zero success rate when we got "up close and personal". I still haven't seen effective techniques to deal with it.
I think the problem is that most aikidoka refuse to insert atemi. But if you look at O'Sensei, he was always clobbering people in his old photos, before he got old and his ki and magic powers got bigger.
@Godsmasher22 I think you hit the nail on the head about atemi. I've seen some sensei's who start this technique with a strike to the side of the attacker's head and then continue with a sweep of the arm to the hand and nikkyo. If done as one motion it's enough to get your opponent off balance and the technique becomes even more effective. I've damned near had my wrist broken with nikkyo and there's not much you want to do to someone applying the technique except escape the pain!
Its a great technique. I been playing with it in BJJ a little bit from standing, I'm not sure I will ever submit anyone but a white belt with it, but it can off set my opponent-even experienced- and allow me to insert other attacks from standing.
surely if you're backed against a wall a leg sweep would work. no space behind you but tons behind him to work with. if not maybe just go crazy with short range attacks aka hammer fists and elbows.
I had this move done on me in a demo, I have good size arms and consider myself to be pretty strong but once you feel things twisting and about to snap there is only one thing that goes through the mind.
This demonstration is good but needs a few touches. 1) problem the guy didnt really grab, if he did you would have to move his head back to take his mind off of his arm.
That arm is not going to bend so easily.
2)You can not stand square or you'll get a punch in the groin. 3)can not hold man with one hand on elbow one hand on wrist and apply nikyo away from the body unless he weighs 60 pounds or more less than you or he will retract his arm. Then the fight begins.
I really don't like the entry on this one - very vulnerable. More feet and hips to angle the body while receiving the attackers hand would be a lot safer!
Demonstration or not, the technique is applied too visibly. It lacks subtlety, fluidity, and blending.
Examine the similar technique of uragyaku or hongyaku found in ninpotaijutsu to understand.
he teaches akido with the wrong mindset. If you try to control or use aikido with the mind set of deffense and trying to control it will be very hard to do it.
I have been doing aikido for 8 + years. My sensei, who is a shihan, has said that nikyo really is a 2d dan technique, it really doesn't belong in the beginner's curriculum. It is very hard to apply correctly, and out on the street, simplicity is the key. I have had my shoulder dislocated by a nidan on this technique...but he was a nasty guy. Of course , all aikido techniques are extremely complex, if done to perfection, even irimi nage.
That's silly. In fact it's downright retarded. I see this kind of thing all over comments, that somehow which hand preference (right or left) of the attacker somehow makes the move entirely useless. Use your WHOLE body, and be able to do with your right side, what you can do with your left.
whether you can use it or not is up to you. If you train effectively it then becomes a possibility. If you dismiss it you will never be able to use it.
if you were to practice this 20 times, twice a week with another person, after a while it will become your natural reaction to a threatening person grabbing at you... there are plenty of unrealistic ways to attack and defend in martial arts that only pros could pull off, but this move here is actually very effective and easy to pull off, even for a small guy vs big (if his technique is perfect). Learning off youtube... probably wouldn't work on the street but for any dedicated aikido student...
@itzlagana your exactly right and well said. Practice makes perfect 20 go's each person has one go and it will become second nature to you. I PROMISE. :)
oh my god. do not show show nikyo to those that dont know aikido. if done wrong, you can break a wrist and cause incredible damage. for those that try this. stop. and if you still do, go beyond slow and move like you are handeling a very small live bird.
I have always learned to do this technique with an atemi, is there a reason this is not present here?

Most often when they grab with only one hand its for punching you with the other hand. This technique wont work then.

this guy may do aikido.
he may act aikido.
but he doesn't understand the idea of aikido.
his mind set is control using fancy moves...
well basically yah.
he teaches akido with the wrong mindset. If you try to control or use aikido with the mind set of deffense and trying to control it will be very hard to do it.
aikido requires you accept and harmonize.
not "use against."
MrPinoy91 3 years ago 8
then what is the right mind set someone who's doing aikido should have?
zombiefriend 3 years ago
its not deffending nor throwing.
its not to take over someone or try and blend with their movements. You don't use anothers energy against them.
You don't of balance to flip or lock to break. If you try... it will be impossible.
but you do accept him and his attack. Complete his safe journey to the ground.
guide him away from the hurt he is about to get into. humble yourself to an attack and give your whole body to the attacker.
once you do this then the first paragrapgh will happpen.
MrPinoy91 3 years ago
that's REALLY interesting. i've never heard it like that before. thanks.

Simplicity of the defense often times makes it a valuable commodity. It means less to remember in times of elevated stress.
