  • @waynescountry Thank you for the nice comment. He surely had a style of his own and I'm sure inspired a lot of people to play the guitar. thanks again Chiboou2

  • Does anybody know what cemetery he is buried and in what town I may pay him a visit sometime.

  • Hi paulhenry nice to hear from you again, I hope all is fine with your music, drop by and chat anytime. Chiboou2

  • I remember Smiley in his hay days in Timmins ON. Canada We were playing at C.K.G.B. radio and smiley was there with his sidekick I forget his name I think he was from Ansonville, anyway I decided to accompany him on my guitar doing a slap beat and he didn't take to that too well and told me if I can't play the friggin thing to hank it up hehe. He had the same teperement as Hank Snow apparently,to the point and Hank Snow didn't like anybody that drank liquor.

  • Smiley could play any instrument. I square danced while he played the fiddle when he was 12 years old at Savard school. We come from Englehart, (Wabewawa)Ont.

I worked with Bruno (his brother) but Smiley was the only one to play. His dad run a dozer for MNR. Great Family.

  • @doreenlyle Thank you so much for the information about you and Smiley, Im always looking for something about Smiley and would really like to find a video about him. So far I only know of one. Thanks again and drop in any time. Chiboou2

  • @doreenlyle i worked with his son "Norm" in Englehart at a saaw mill in the early eighties. Smily sings songs

  • @MinerDadable I love his "Jeannies afraid of the dark" and always loved this tune brought tears to my peelers years ago, still does to this day

  • Another great post of a great singer without a doubt. I'm surprised that there is so little actual video of Smiley Bates - so far I've found none on YouTube -- yet if he was performing in 1996 there must be some? Just wondering.

  • @Mandolin1944 I would love to see some videos of Smiley as well.I meet him a few times And was lucky enough to se him in concert twice ,it was awsome he owned the stag, he was a true master on stag.At one time I lived only a few houses down street from him, but I worked so much, I never really got to visit with him. I've always regreted that because I so did admire him and his ability to sing and play .What a loss to his family and fans when he passed.Truley one of the best,He loved his music

  • smiley is my cousin this was when they tried to change smiley's style of how his sound and smiley said it sounded to busy for his liking and if people did like how he sounded they wouldn't buy his records so he went back to 4 or 5 peace band and sent the rest packing lol
