@sporecreatorperson it was a King Of The Hill episode I saw years ago that makes me want to try it and yet I can't find someone to bring any down here for me
LMAO at fish candycane. But seriously I didnt understand the process of what made lutefisk so bad for so many. It's the long de-salting process and the lye that does it? In Jamaica the national dish is ackee and saltfish, which is salted cod but the desalting doesn't take as many days and also milk is used to help extract the salt.
@SaffyreMoon- it's my understanding that the lye basically makes the fish into jello. That and the fact that there is an underlying natural flavor of truck exhaust and a cat's butt.
The problem is that you held it on your fork for three hours. This stuff is only good when eaten piping hot. If you let it cool down, it goes from "gelatinous fish" to "cold, gelatinous fish", and that is just 50% worse.
I have never tried lutefisk, but I would rather try that than cheese. I hate cheese... I would do the exact same thing that you did when you were eating lutefisk. I really don't know why I hate cheese. I may have been traumatized as a kid...
You sir are a Man among children. I know what you've been here, as a small boy, I once tried to see if I could eat lutefisk alone, as you have, with a portion just about the size of yours. It took me about an hour and a half, but by God, I ate it all. I also didn't eat anything else the next couple of days, as my stomach was slowly dying from the terrible poison I ingested. I salute you sir!
And I salute you, sir. People cannot judge us by the tears we shed choking down such foul creations, but rather should judge us by the stalwart character and bravery that we've shown. We've shared a trauma that others cannot understand. Solidarity, brother. Solidarity.
Yes, and that would make it taste like jellied vomit with melted butter on it. I reject you, sir. I reject you and everything your lutefisk-loving beliefs stand for.
I hope this guy is acting or else he is a real wuss. Lutfisk taste like cod with a little less flaver when one eats it by itself. It's not offensive at all and really doesn't smell much different than any other white ocean fish. Simply delicious when prepared properly!!!
A real wuss wouldn't hide behind the anonymity of his or her comments and would instead show themselves eating actual lutefisk. While some have argued that Andrea's response video shows just that, my crack team of investigators have determined both that: (1) she's clearly under duress and has a gun pointed at her from off camera (look at her expression); and (2) is not eating lutefisk, but a simulant food that actually does taste like candycanes. A fraud!
And LOL how the h.. did you get it jellyfied. hahahha, oh my im glad i watched this again... "I mean it smells like fish... but its sitting there jiggeling like jelly".. hahaha
This is a dish that grows on you. The first time I ate it, I did it only to be polite because my father-in-law had prepared it. Now I love it! But you have to have it with salt and butter, or else with gravy.
hehe the fish was a bit to jelly to im a norwegian so its not called lotafisk the name i know is lutefisk served with boiled potatoes crisp bacon pea stu can also use a mild mustard sauce real a great meal if you get used to it :)
Nobody eats lutefisk like that. That's just funny.
But also sad, because you offend a potentially delicious dish, and thousands of Norwegians who love it.
Try it again: A much smaller piece cooked in an oven at high temperature with a drizzle of pepper and a lot of salt to extract the water. Have boiled potatoes (not mashed) and diced bacon. Use some bacon fat as sauce.
If you still find it disgusting, let it be known. But what you are having in this movie - everyone would detest ;-)
@ugleseth123 whats the point of eating something that has to be bombarded with bacon to be edible? U can cover anything in bacon and it will be good! Why not just use fish cooked in a regular manner with what u said im sure it would be much better. Tradition is stupid advancement is key.
@bobwatters We do cook fish in a regular manner too. I know no one more picky about their fish than the population along the coast of Norway - fish bought in supermarkets is considered old; they buy their fish off the boats if they don't fish it themselves. So don't think we don't appreciate fresh fish in Norway ;-) But lutefisk is something that some of us want to taste once or twice each year.
@ugleseth123 Fish in the supermarket is old. Atleast here it is, u cant kind decent fish at the store here unless u go to the very high end stores. But yea This seems to be one of the things that people are grow up being forced to eat once or twice a year. Then when they are grown up they force their kids to eat it b/c thats what their parfents did. Then u have some nasty fish that no one likes but everyone eats b,c no one wants to say fuck traditions this is nasty.
LOL "candy cane fish". I was laughing so hard when I was watching this. I've never tried this myself, just looking at it is so gross, but you cracked me up with the "candy cane fish"! Too Funny!
lutefisk has been one of my family christmas traditions ALL of my life. when we sit down and eat it it is not LUTEFISK it is LOTAFISK becuause we eat a lot of it!!! this year we ate 9 pounds between 4 of us!!! it is someting that either you love or hate there is no inbetween.......but i do think it is in your blood !!!!
Pathetic. You never eat it this way. You have mashed potatoes, lots of GOOD melted butter and eat it all together. Well, a bit here and there. It is good and some folks think it is great. This was a put on!
Blow it out your lutehole. How dare you question my integrity after witnessing me eating such vile sewage. And after everything that I sacrificed. I bid you good day, sir.
Its a funny way to eat it, so thats entertaining (not pathetic) but you ought to try it again with butter and proper preparation .. oh and a good ale rather than a pop. :)
As a western Norwegian, I would never eat that. I don't see the point in spoiling fish like this... What's the point in making lutefisk, when you can have fresh fish, boiled or fried..mmmmmm...yum...
By that rationale I presume you won't eat smoked salmon, gravlaks or rakfisk either? Lutefisk served the proper way, with potatoes, mushy peas, bacon fat, mustard (+ beer and aquavit obviously) is pure nectar. If you've never had a proper lutefisk meal, you haven't lived.
lol..I didn't think of it that way:P I very much like smoked salmon, and gravlaks and rakfisk too, but those are mostly used for starters, and served cold. And it looks delicious...yummy:P But the appearance of lutefisk isn't really appetizing...
I heard gravy kills most of the bad flavor in lutefisk. Me being of Italian descent I can't speak from experience, but I heard that it does from someone who is Norwegian. Far as scandinavian food I think I'd rather stick to swedish meatballs anyday over that.
Growing up at Christmas we would have our traditional Norweigian Lutefisk. Grandma loved it. She made a sauce that helped the taste...just alittle bit. Good for you for giving it a try. I think of grandma and sure miss hearing how much she loved her lutefisk.
Awesome vid. Got interested in seeing those weird food videos, and found yours out right away, thanks for posting it. Lutefisk isn't that bad in the end xD Great family, by the way, much luck to you all ;)
