Did learning japanese at first seem very scary to you? I'm trying to teach myself japanese and I'm still only on Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji seems very... intimidating in that you need to learn atleast 1000-1625 symbols in order to read a book/newspaper.
Another question is, is learning Japanese in a year and a half doable for someone who has always had trouble with languages? I'm really determied, but it just seems so scary..
I did that, and everything is going well! And on the last day of the week, you do a revision of all. And at the end of the month, another revision! :)
hi i have a question, recently i started to try to learn japanese alone, and start browsing about anyone who has any information about how to start learning, what i notice is that almost everybody who learned by themselves thinks that the traditional way to learn a language its just to slow, and there is better methods, i wonder if for me where its important being able to read, hear and talk what method should i use, i really dont care for writing at least for now, do you have any sugestions.
ok so I did have the right idea...I was planing on learning in Hiragana and Katakana before even attempting Kanji...good video and thanks for it. However come to think of it, them combining symbols is just like what they do in German. Some of German's words are just combinations of other words..for example the word for Hypocrite is a combination of the words for "Appear" and "Holy." Suicide is literally "self" and "Murder" So it would seem that both are not as hard as they appear..good to know.
You speak so passionately about Japanese that it makes me want to learn it! Lol, even though i only speak English and French. European languages seem easier for me lol.
Wooo. I have a box at home and i think it has got japanese or chinese writing on it and i've always wondered what it says. So now I can learn japanese to find out. :D
thank you! i tried the site you given it was very good. yes lots of kanji doesnt ring a bell like the Big + sheep = Beautiful but its fun still to read it right.
I learned (learnt?) all my japanese from restaurant names. wagamama means 'selfish' and itsu means 'when'. yo sushi means 'hello fish'. We need a few more reataurants before I'll be able to say hello, I'm slightly insolent.
hey thanks for the tip I just started japanese but I still need to memorize kanji and kano anyway thanks a lot are you perhaps wrote the genki japanese textbook?
Actually that happened to me in backwards. Sometimes I learn a certain kanji which is a bit complicated and then I learn another kanji which Is made up from the previous one. Sometimes kanji does give you a break. A good example would be the kanji to hear and the kanji for ear. The kanji to hear contains a gate and an ear. Really amazing
I am not sure if this is within your knowledge (for it might differ quite for each one), but do you know if Japanese games are written in Kanji, Katakana, or Hiragana? Is it a mixture of all of them?
@TPFInferno It's usually a mixture of all of them, but... some of the ones aimed at young kids have hiragana instead of the kanji for the kanji that the kids haven't learnt at school yet!
dude, i love you sooo much, and i dont ever say that to guys. i am a preschool teacher in tokyo. so they are EXTRA genki. it ruins me at times, but i remember what you say, to basically keep it fun. but its i am in the loop of trying to learn japanese quickly. its weird, after 6 months of being around it, you just start speaking it unconciously. but a lot of your things have helped. so thank you. i am going to that sight today bro.
I just love how helpful you are, I've recommended your website to everyone who ever wanted to learn Japanese, I'm still working on the both Katakana and Hiragana, so I got a while before I step up to Kanji, I'm learning that Japanese is easier to learn, the better you understand both Katakana and Hiragana.. and your website helps so much with that.
@GenkiJapanNet Do you know which type of symbols are used for Japanese games? Is it just Kanji, Katakana, or Hiragana? Is it a mixture of all of those symbols given the right situation?
some games that are geared toward a younger audience, say elementary schoolers, use only kana, like Pokemon for instance. Some games like Final Fantasy VI for the GBA let you choose kana or kanji. hey richard. i have watched a TON of anime and i picked up a bit of japanese whilst developing my love for japan and japanese stuff. so, i wanted to ask what is the best way to learn just for hobbies free (from the basics) this youtube channel has really helped me. thanks
I totally agree with your method for learning characters. I learnt my Hiragana by writing them all out 100 times each. It's really the only thing to do to learn a new writing system as you cannot relate it to anything your currently know. I'll be learning my katakana soon by doing the same thing and then taking the Ichinensei kanji syllabus to learn them.
So there's 3 ways of writing Japanese? It seems overwhelming.. But they all sound and pronounce it the same?
I hope I get accepted to the distance course (not sure what it is called in English) start learning Japanese this spring, because I find it interesting and hopefully I can use it when I get older.
Also any tips on how to write beautiful? Because I write awful even in English letters..
@dcx666 kanji are chinese characters.. and yes.. but in chinese 大 is "da"... which is big... and mei is correct.. so if get abit familiar with chinese... it's kinda easy to learn kanji, coz they start to make sense... :]
hi,im dhedz and leaving japan but i am not japanese.lol btw thanks for sharing this video its really cool..i can read and write hiragana and katakana but want to learn more about kanji.
Microsoft IME supports handwriting recognition. Which makes it pretty useful for learning the strokes if you ask me ;)
And if it's about learning their pronounciation and meaning... try to learn the more simple ones first, and try to relate them by what they look like (i mean, like e.g. with 木 and 森- that doesn't work always, but often enough ;D)
When people come to Japan, they MUST buy an electronic dictionary! This wonderful gadget enables us to look up kanji with handwriting. There are usually 100 or more contents in a small B4-sized dictionary, such as Japanese, English, En-Jp/Jp-En dictionary, Jp and En thesaurus, encyclopaedia, etc. The latest models are even in colour! How amazing...
I would suggest getting authentic japanese manga!!! (With it not translated) Once you learn the hiragana, you can learn some new kanji really fast :) (This is NOT the best way to learn kanji, but it is a wonderful side-way to learn some extra kanji ;) )
Why would someone want to learn this if they've no intention of traveling to Japan or, ever really come across japanese people in their home town of say the UK?
Thanks for the wonderful tips! I'm just starting my journey into Hiragana and Katakana with Human Japanese on my iPhone (*wonderful app*) and the Kanji part seems daunting but one step at a time. I can see why learning the basic grammar and structure of Japanese with kana is so important to do first. (Plus knowing a little history of the language and how it evolved also helps you understand why it is the way it is!)
But that aside, when writing out the first 100 kanji (or any kanji for studying) do you pronouce it too? Because theres a lot of different pronouciations right? Then theres the on and kun thing. So I was wondering how you go about it. Just write it out?
Good question! Luckily for most of the first 100 they are mostly really common words that, usually, have one reading that is most popular. Later on it does get tricky to decide which "pronunciation" to use, which is the main reason it's tough and the main reason even adults here can't read the whole of a newspaper! But in the beginning, don't worry about it!
In the beginning of your video you mentioned about learning the kana. Well, the site you told us about for Kanji de manga also has a book called kana de manga which teaches you the 46 letters each of hiragana and katakana. I bought myself a copy and I love it, it's really good.
Im confused.....Is Kanji the same thing as the other two?....I just want to learn the most common.... Please help me D: I want to learn japanese, so which is the easiest one of the three too learn???
You should learn all three, but start with hiragana. Then do katakana, and once you've got those down you can move into kanji. All three are used and important in written japanese. Ganbare!
@sakuraloveryay you need to learn all 3, starting with Hiragana because it is the one that is used when the other 2 can't be. After Hiragana learn Katakana, then Kanji. If you only learn one you'll have a lot of trouble reading modern japanese, because they use all 3 in the same sentence.
its good to kno you should learn to speak first but do you have any recomenndations (ha ha sorry i cant even spell in english) for learning to speak????? plz post another video or reply i really need your help.
I'm having problems learning japanese, and I have a questions too: Should I start learning how to speak japanese BEFORE I start learning how to write in japanese? Do I need to know Kanji, Hiragana AND Katakana (or just 1)?
Man, I'll never learn japanese....I've been trying for YEARS and I only know A FEW words (ex: Hello, Goodbye) and A FEW Hiragana but that's it....maybe I should just quit now....
ooops! so have i made a mistake as first what ive done when i decided to learn japanese was to learn kana alphabets then simple words and how to write them. should i have started with just sayin them??? ohhh.... but anyway its such a cool language and sooner or later i will be perfect in that ^^'
i dont know much either man but i do knowthat you shouldnt give in, if you want something all you have to do is keep going and trying your goal is there ... just keep trying
when i said manga i ment anime =], i dont wanna learn how to spell and stuff, just listen, so if u could jus tell me a good way to learn that, tell me please =]
same here though i have learned hiragana very well i still have trouble with katakana but a great thanks to genki japan for recommending kanji de manga it was really helpful
Good Video. Best Wishes From Jersey. Channel Islands.

I think it's best way to learn. Most of complicated kanji is composed of some simple kanji. for example,
日(day)+音(sound)=暗(dark)
日(day)+寺(temple)=時(time)
日(day)+青(blue)=晴(fine) ...etc

According to one theory,
In ancient China, People sacrificed a sheep to a god.
gradually, "sheep" ended up to stand for "sacrifice"
So, Big/Large sacrifice is beatiful.(大いなる犠牲は美しい)
"美" was made like this.

some games that are geared toward a younger audience, say elementary schoolers, use only kana, like Pokemon for instance. Some games like Final Fantasy VI for the GBA let you choose kana or kanji. Microsoft IME supports handwriting recognition. Which makes it pretty useful for learning the strokes if you ask me ;)
And if it's about learning their pronounciation and meaning... try to learn the more simple ones first, and try to relate them by what they look like (i mean, like e.g. with 木 and 森- that doesn't work always, but often enough ;D)
narutofan9999 2 years ago
When people come to Japan, they MUST buy an electronic dictionary! This wonderful gadget enables us to look up kanji with handwriting. There are usually 100 or more contents in a small B4-sized dictionary, such as Japanese, English, En-Jp/Jp-En dictionary, Jp and En thesaurus, encyclopaedia, etc. The latest models are even in colour! How amazing...

I would suggest getting authentic japanese manga!!! (With it not translated) Once you learn the hiragana, you can learn some new kanji really fast :) (This is NOT the best way to learn kanji, but it is a wonderful side-way to learn some extra kanji ;) )
kamisamanoko 2 years ago
or, buying japanese books for children, because they usually have the pronounciation of the kanji written in hiragana.

Why would someone want to learn this if they've no intention of traveling to Japan or, ever really come across japanese people in their home town of say the UK?
Topdoginuk 2 years ago
to understand things like anime, manga, games, and they might have intention of traveling to japan, oh and the uk isnt a town
kunaiespio594 2 years ago 5
lolz, you'll need it for watching anime and playing japanese games without english translation

From the point of Japanese, the reasons would be:
Japan has the 2nd biggest economy in the world
The population of native speakers ranks 9th
Japanese anime and manga are now common
Japanese technology is advanced and there are also interesting inventions
Japan is very different from European countries in many ways (tradition, culture, scenery, etc)
Japanese language itself is unique (isolated language)
A lot of good points are condensed in the small land, having influence in the world.

(Plus knowing a little history of the language and how it evolved also helps you understand why it is the way it is!)

haha i am currently using manga uni for my manga drawing and i noticed that in there last update

Good method.
But that aside, when writing out the first 100 kanji (or any kanji for studying) do you pronouce it too? Because theres a lot of different pronouciations right? Then theres the on and kun thing. So I was wondering how you go about it. Just write it out?
IDontCareSoSTFU 2 years ago
Good question! Luckily for most of the first 100 they are mostly really common words that, usually, have one reading that is most popular. Later on it does get tricky to decide which "pronunciation" to use, which is the main reason it's tough and the main reason even adults here can't read the whole of a newspaper! But in the beginning, don't worry about it!

In the beginning of your video you mentioned about learning the kana. Well, the site you told us about for Kanji de manga also has a book called kana de manga which teaches you the 46 letters each of hiragana and katakana. I bought myself a copy and I love it, it's really good.

Lol's i need to learn to speak....
I already know hirigana well but i should have focussed more on speaking because i only know things like hello and how are you and stuff....
Just a quick question, Do the Kanji in Japanese mean the same thing in chinese or is pronounced the same in chinese? (Or have any relation at all)

Cool You Can Really Learn Japanese.
NanosoftRussia 2 years ago
Im confused.....Is Kanji the same thing as the other two?....I just want to learn the most common.... Please help me D: I want to learn japanese, so which is the easiest one of the three too learn???
SakuraLoverYay 2 years ago
You should learn all three, but start with hiragana. Then do katakana, and once you've got those down you can move into kanji. All three are used and important in written japanese. Ganbare!
Kellywa76 2 years ago
@sakuraloveryay you need to learn all 3, starting with Hiragana because it is the one that is used when the other 2 can't be. After Hiragana learn Katakana, then Kanji. If you only learn one you'll have a lot of trouble reading modern japanese, because they use all 3 in the same sentence.

I have a question! How much do you need to be able to speak before you try to write because I am doing both at once (self-tutoring)
AngelWingx3 2 years ago

I'm having problems learning japanese, and I have a questions too: Should I start learning how to speak japanese BEFORE I start learning how to write in japanese? Do I need to know Kanji, Hiragana AND Katakana (or just 1)?
Man, I'll never learn japanese....I've been trying for YEARS and I only know A FEW words (ex: Hello, Goodbye) and A FEW Hiragana but that's it....maybe I should just quit now....
*sigh*

Brian2z2 2 years ago
what can i do if i just wanna be able to understand what someone is saying? :D, like in manga's i could just listen.
Brian2z2 2 years ago
It took me 3 hours to learn read hiragana and katakana.
I still have problems when I try to write with them but I quess it get's better after I've spent two more evenings on writing.
The amount of kanjis is a bit of motivation killer for me. I only know numbers and few other basic ones.
Atleast I can now see words when I read eventhought I understand next to nothing of it.
Kelenius 2 years ago
same here though i have learned hiragana very well i still have trouble with katakana but a great thanks to genki japan for recommending kanji de manga it was really helpful

Go Onnnn
himerobine 2 years ago
so in order to learn japanese you hvae to learn all characters of Kanji, Hiragana, or Katakana first? wat follows that?
donturnbak09 2 years ago
Once you've done all that? Genius status!
But you don't do all those first. First you learn to speak, then once you can speak fairly well you start to read and write.
