i have been looking into what pet food is better and i know now to look for more meat in the food and not grains but i didn't know about the cat thing about the cats needed wet cat food,i have a cat and he gets wet cat and dry food well my mam buys the food and i keep telling her to go for the better foods without grains but she never listens what im getting at,i want a heathly pet that will live its life to the fullist and not a pet that will die young of problems that could have been avoided
rescuefido- its synthetic vitamin K(menadione bisulfite complex), there some mixed feedback on whether it should be used in pet food or not. Its been banned from human consumption because it can lead to toxic buildup which can result in health issues. Since there are natural forms of vit K, theres no need to use it, a lot of grocery store brands still do because its cheaper.
@idaviruma Thanks so much for the info. This is exactly the reasons i tell people do not buy your pet food at the commercial places buy all natural human grade only. I think Dogs and humans have similar digestive issues. And if it is toxic to humans i would have to say it's toxic to pets too Thanks o much for you input!
just wanted to make couple comments. The jelly layer you see when you open a can of food is not fat but either carageenan or guar gum which gives moist food that pate texture. Also Earthborn does not use menadione anymore.
In my last comment (below) I meant to write we switched him to Diamond Naturals, since it is free of major grains like corn, wheat, soy no by-products & has fresh meat as first ingredients as opposed to pedigree which who knows what really goes into it. our vet said that he lived 3 yrs longer than he expected.
When we adopted our first dog the lady who was fostering him had been feeding him pedigree. Since he was our first dog & had read the ingredients on the bag we thought it was a pretty decent food considering it was free of most grains like corn, wheat, soy has no by products & fresh meat so we fed him that his whole life we had with him (he was 8 yrs when we adopted him) He did have cancer when we adopted him & knew he wouldn't have many more years with him. He lived to be 13 yrs.
@KRISTAEWATERS I AGREE WITH YOU 100 PERCENT! I use Taste of the wild the lamb version with no grains. I think that is an excellent food too. IT doesn't have as high protein count as Orijen. For my little 5 pounder he doesn't need all that much protein.
I'm not sure, I have a Maltese 13 years old and a maltese/yorki I adopted who is a year old. Please if your looking for a new dog please adopt do not buy from a pet store. This increases dog abuse thru puppy mills. It's horrible beyond human comprehension what they do. Please adopt. Thank you for watching
could my little puppy german shepherd eat evo herring and salmon. My other gsd eat red meat evo but we tried giving him the salmon and herring and he seems to love it. You might think i am annoying but i really care for my dogs. Thank you
@nikeftw1 Are you kidding? NO way do I think your annoying. I wish every human on earth would care as much for their pets as you and I do. IF your dog loves Evo which also is a great brand, then give him what he likes.
Just please a lesson I learned the hard way and that is to rotate your food. Switch the meats around don't always just feed chicken or fish or red meat. Thanks so much please do keep me posted on your dogs! Send pic post them here! Take care!
I have an 11-month Chinese Crested and a 6-year old Chihuahua/Sheltie mix. They are both eating adult Eagle Pack. The older dog doesnt like this food very much. Also the main ingredient is pork. Im thinking of switching foods but I have no idea what to switch to! I dont care about price at all, but want a good quality food. They are both about 11 pounds.
@ash3227 I am so glad you asked as I hate to hear dogs getting sick from foods. Pork I have never heard of that in a dog food. YES get them off that now! I would recommend something grain free at their age their digestive system is now a concern at their age.A good brand is Taste of the wild, my little yorki/mix (rescue) loves it. I had to try several before i could get him to clean his bowl. Another couple really good brands are also Orijen, and ZIWIPEAK which probably top of the line. See 2nd
@rescuefido yea i understand but my dad is the one that pays so he decides and he likes evo herring and salmon. Then we are switching him to evo red meats.
@nikeftw1 Can I ask how old you are? And you told me that that food had 42 percent protein? Just reminding you. With all this back and forth we have had, I would like to ask you have you brought this dog to a vet and had him checked over, had all the correct shots? And most important do you have him on a monthly heartworm pill???? As I told you before a puppy is susceptible to a lot of stuff, and if he is eating more than you think he should it could be because he has a parasite or worm.
@nikeftw1 And so don't forget for a while to bring his stool into the vet every 6 months to have him checked for worms. Regarding his training with this breed this is crucially important. Are you walking him? Please start reading how to train a gsd as it is a little different than other dogs. Don't baby him, let him know your there for him but get him walking on a leash asap. Do not let him jump up on you. Exercise will help prevent the bone thing. IF he gets scared to not koddle him.
@rescuefido i am 15 but just because i am not that old i still love my dog. Oh and i am glad to figure out from the evo website there is a fourmala called evo small bites that you can give to puppies as well according from the aafco. I am going to switch him from the herring and salmon to that until he's between 6-8 months then i'll switch him to the normal evo red meat. Thanks for all the help. I learned a lot of stuff from you.
@nikeftw1 15 huh? I would have thought you were 21! The kids these days are so smart! I am so proud of you for doing all this research on your dog that you Obviously Love a bunch. Do me a favor send me a picture of him to my email
@nikeftw1 I am pretty sure they have a puppy formula. So that is what you would want to give him. Don't forget what i said many messages ago. As months go by you need to switch his food around so he doesn't become allergic to it. So just feed that poor dog of yours you can always change. What is he eating while your trying to figure it out??? Does he like it/?? ok and lastly you have not answer me as to whether he has been to the vet and is on heart worm????
@rescuefido what you mean heart worm you mean deworming. Also what foumala of taste of the wild is best for my gsd puppy. High prairie, wetlands, or pacific streams. I am leaning toward pacific streams because it has less protein. Haha thanks i really do love my dogs
@nikeftw1 Monthly heartworm like Heartguard plus it's a monthly pill that is essential to give as it kills Heartworm which comes from a mosquito bite, and also kills hook and whip worms. Different brands kill all heart worm but other stuff. So you want one that does heart worm, hook and whip worms. Those are contagious the last two and can come into the home on bottom of shoes. The pill is maybe 9 bucks a month but a must. But your dog must be tested first. Usually puppies don't need to be teste
@rescuefido okay i will look into that but what fourmala of taste of the wild is best for gsd puppy high praire, wetlands, or pacific streams. Please hurry my dad is going to buy it today.High praire and wetlands has 32 protein. Pacific stream has 25 protein but less meat. People say pacific stram is best for a large breed puppy what do you think?
@nikeftw1 Ok nike it's the high prrairie with the bison and roasted venison. My dog eats that right now and it is the only one he eats all the others he wouldn't eat. Also the fish of taste of the wild and orijen my dog did not like.
The bison and venison is red meat good for gsd.. Go for that one!!!!! I now you will be happy
@rescuefido okay thank you but i decided for the pacific stream one because i heard that 25 protein is perfect for gsds. This is my plan right now i give him pacific stream thenwhen he's 6-8 months i give him high praire or wetlands. when he's 1 year old i will give him evo red meat is that a good plan.
@rescuefido i am sorry i mean right now i am going to feed him pacific stream or high praire depending which one he likes i bought pacific stream because it has less protein but i need to see which one he likes more. Then when he's a year i will give him the evo
@nikeftw1 Your such a good boy for letting me know that! Thanks. keep your receipts as if he doesn't seem to like the fish bring it back and get the other. All pet stores will take it back. Good luck give him a hug for me!
@rescuefido haha thanks. I heard that the fish fourmala has something that's in it called ethoxyquin and that humans can't eat it. Is that true and does that harm the dog
@nikeftw1 You know I am going to have to start charging you! HE HE... Here is the deal I don't know the answer to that question. But I do know that because of toxins in the seas and oceans humans are not suppose to eat fish more than once per week. That is why my gut kept leaning you to go with my suggestions. My instinct in impeccable and you should trust it most of the time. Seriously i am usually right on when i follow my instinct. Don't foget you can get both and mix it.
@nikeftw1 You worry free??? I don't really think so my nice friend. But that is okay it is much better to be overly concerned about your wonderful new puppy than to not be concerned enough! (You can use my quote!) LOL Now find out if your dad has him on the monthly heart worm pill???? Very important! God bless you!
@nikeftw1 YES VERY VERY IMPORTANT. If your dog gets heartworm, it can kill him if not treated. And heart worm treatment is really expensive around 1000 dollars. They dont' always start puppies on it depending when they are born. But since it's summer and he could have a mosquito bite that could give him heart worm he should be on it. Where do you live? What state? Sometimes that make a difference. But the pill also kills common worms that you do not want your dog to get.
@nikeftw1 As long as it's ok with your vet them i am ok with it. I don't like using flee meds as it's a pesticide. But on big dogs with a lot of hair I guess it's necessary.
@nikeftw1 I just came back from my local dog food store. The taste of the wild, has many flavors now and from looking at them the bags said good for all stages of life. So that is good. The wetlands one looked really good.
@nikeftw1 Also back to the heartworm deal. When you got your dog, did your parents and you bring him to the vet for a first Physical and exam??? IF not they should do that . Please tell them do not cut corners it could cost them in the long run. He must have his RABIES SHOT AT 16 WEEKS!!!!!!! A RABIES SHOT IS REQUIRED BY LAW. IF your dog nipped a child or killed a cat he could be quarantined or put to sleep depending on your county. Go to your county website and read their laws. Very Important!
@rescuefido i noticed one of your comments said a dog must have a rabies at 16 weeks? None of the vets here will do that until the dog is 6 months of age. I guess certain states/counties may be different though. My youngest dog is almost there though, just a couple more weeks. I didn't watch much of your video because of the link, but I'm glad you look into getting grain free foods. They are soooo much better for our dogs, not to mention the dogs are healthier and eat less as well.
Respond to this video... GSD are considered like pitt bulls and dobermans. So most counties have no mercy for what they call the bully breads. I had my gsd specially trained which turned out to be a very good thing. He is perfect now. Very obedient and gets along with cats you name it but yet protective. Your job is to train your dog so he never is aggressive, but if you ever need protection he will do that naturally. You do not want to encourage aggression in any form, check ur county
@rescuefido yea but right now he has frontline plus 2 more mediacations left so after we used all of it then we will give him the revolutin so in about 2 months i hope nothing will happen
@nikeftw1 IF that is what your dad wants to do fine, but if your dog gets heartworm between now and 3 months from now and you give him a heart worm med while he is already infected it could severely hurt hurt him. I would recommend you dad has him tested for heart worm before giving him the revolution as that plans to be as it sounds about 3 months from now.
Respond to this video... And my question is even though your treating him for flees and ticks your not treating him for worms. I just saw a Sheppard on facebook last night that was totally emancipated and filled with worms so bad they were eating him alive from the inside out. They could even see worms in his eyes nose mouth all over they are trying to save him right now. Hook and whip worms are horrible and that is what is lying outside every where!
@ash3227 ziwipeak I have tried as well and they make a air dried grain free. The other ones are grain free too.
If you can not find a higher quality store in your town you can find these online just google them. For some reason when i try to put the web sites here they won't post. Also keep in mine for your Crested to look for products for his skin. Since they have skin that is always exposed be really careful. I know your careful. Come back and let me know how the food worked out. Thks watching
@ash3227 I think a great food is "Taste of the Wild" another one is "Orejen", look around at places in your city that handle speciality food. Look for a Odd meat, like buffalo or lamb the pork NADA i would skip that for sure. I have never seen a dog food with pork, I cant' even imagine. Thank you so much for watching.
@eeveelutions133 I have not personally used it. But if your choice was that over Iams or some of the others then i congratulate you! Depending on your dog depends on the food too. See how you dog does on it, note if they scratch more, runny bowels, throwing up, and then if they have any of that you will know that was the wrong food. I think that brand makes a "grain free" formula if so i would go for that. I use "taste of the wild on my one year old manic, LOL and he eats it fine. Thks for watch
@nikeftw1 Absolutely that would be perfect. Stay away from canned food. Canned food is or in my opinion should only be used if your dog gets sick as the kibble when their stomachs are already upset makes it worse. But actually if your dog ever gets sick hold food for vets say 24 hours i think that's too long. But you can give them canned pumpkin from the grocery store and they love it and it will not upset their tummy's in most cases. I raised a shepard so please stay in touch! I'm here for ya!
@rescuefido he's not a working dog and i'm currently feeding him innova large breed puppy food. I don't think he agrees to grain so i am switching him to orijen large breed puppy food. People say it has to much protein so i'm asking you
@nikeftw1 Oh Ok now I understand. Right on with the Orijen. Too much protein is a problem but not the way it is developed in it's form in the Orijen or Taste of the wild (i use) my dog likes it better also grain free.
But here is the deal you should rotate what you feed your dog every 4-6 months anyway. So with that the protein which isn't a problem with these foods anyway then with rotation you can use a few grains. Like Rice. Ziwi Peak is super high end and good too.
@rescuefido ok thanks but why do we need to change what they eat every 4 -6 months do we have to. Is innova good dog food. Should i switch to orijen. Thank You.
@nikeftw1 Innova is good I have my puppy on it but his stools were loose. I think it's perfectly healthy for them but can be upsetting to the digestive system for too many veges. Reason to switch and this happened with my doberman. I had him on California naturals lamb and rice for 2 years. It worked perfectly but he all of a sudden got horribly allergic to it. I had a heck of a time getting him straighten around and lots of vet bills. The good vet will tell you to switch the food up.
Respond to this video... I would switch to Orijen or Taste of the wild if you think your dog is having tummy aches or loose stools or grains not working for him. Then in 6 months try a new but slowly mix new food in with old. Keep receipts for your food it's returnable if your dog doesn't like it. Rice can be an allergen too. You ask why switch. Example we all use toothpaste with mint in it. One day in my 20's I broke out from tooth paste turns out it was the mint! I had used mint 20 yr
@rescuefido thanks but from what i heard the evo herring and salmon is a lot of protein for a german shepherd puppy. That's why i am asking you should i feed it normally on how much normal puppy food feed or feed less tell me how much to feed him each meal for 3 meals a day. Thank You
@nikeftw1 Feed your puppy what he seems to like and watch his bowels to make sure they are semi firm. Now a new food will cause softer bowels so give it a few days to make sure all looks okay in that dept. It is good your feeding him 3 times a day as pupppies do need to be fed many times a day. As to how much as much as they will eat. I always sit with my dog and let them eat while i'm right there. Dogs really like this. Then when they have had enough they will stop. Pull food up.
@nikeftw1 The amount you should feed a dog on the back of the bag is somewhat of a guideline. But they always tell you to feed your dog more than you need to. A large full grown sheppard should be fed about 3 cups of food a day. But it has to do with their activity level too. If they are super active they will work up more of an appetite. It good to give them fresh bits of fresh veges like broccoli and carrots. That is the only human to use.But this is good for them
@rescuefido but sometimes he might eat to much since evo herring and salmon has 42 percent protein is that too much for a 3 month german shepherd. Orijen large breed puppy has 40 percent protein. Since evo is a adult food i am scared that won't be good for him. The kibbles are small so he could digest it as well. I think it is okay for him but i want to know exactly how much to feed him not too much and not to little
@nikeftw1 First you should know that the protein listed in the grain free high quality foods is not that same kind of protein in junk food. So it's not harmful that being said all dogs are different. But a gsd needs a lot of protein to grow properly into a strong dog. Plus puppies need to eat often. So if your home feed him 4-5 times a day maybe 1/2 cup or less each time. Watch his appetite as to how much he eats when. Maybe he will be a dog that likes to eat the most in am or pm. SEE NEXT
Respond to this video... You can take both brands and mix them together. He might actually pick out what he likes and then you can take note of that. Plus then you can mix more of a veg based food with the higher protein food and i think that would be a great match. He is a puppy and puppies go thru growth spurts. So some days they may not eat as much and other days they will eat you out of house and home. So let the puppy dictate how much just keep the food coming until he is 6 months old appr
Respond to this video... I use a measuring cup and you can keep notes as to how much he actually ate each day, and let that kind of be your guide. Your worrying too much I know you love him but just feed him. It will work out. I was worried about the protein for my puppy too just like you, but then i researched and found out the way they make it not to worry. Plus puppy's do need a lot of protein. So if you have both foods then use both and he will let you know what he likes. SEE NEXT
@rescuefido but will too much protein make him grow to fast for the evo herring and salmon. Some people say when they grow to fast its not good for the joints. Thank You.
@nikeftw1 Your very good at learning the proper things for your dog. Yes that can be a concern my gsd which i fed god knows what is long time ago probably science diet and he drew too fast and had the pain in his bones for a couple years. If your worried like i said mix the two foods and use less of the high protein one. And maybe only give him the high protein one time a day to 2 depending how often you are feeding him. And then instead of keeping him on puppy formulas until the normal 12 mo,
Respond to this video... Turn his food to adult food at around 6 months. But please understand I am equally concerned that your vetting him and monthly heart worm?? Ok? Please take it one day at a time, See what the dog eats. They have natural instincts as to what is good for them. With my 2 maltese's when they were puppies and into adulthood i fed them crap cuz i knew no better. Nutro brand and for 4-6 years that i had then on it, it was a daily fight to get then to eat it.
Respond to this video... Come to find out they were throwing up yellow bial every day, Once i switched to high quality food they quit throwing up and they even LIKED their food. The point is they knew more than i did that the food i was giving them which has been under investigation by certain groups was a bad food for them. They knew it and didn't like eating it. Once i had on high quality they ate like crazy. So follow your dogs lead!!!
@nikeftw1 I personally am against that. There are too many factors that can go wrong. Some people swear by it and others their dogs got severely sick. STick with the plan we had yesterday. You need to have a little faith in your puppy he will guide when he doesn't want to eat something. Go with the grain free orijen or the other i forgot now and mix with the vegetable one. He will be okay as your not going to have him on this forever. But you need to focus on one strategy for now. ok?
Respond to this video... You are bringing him to your vet right? And you have done proper shots etc. right? A monthly heart worm pills is ESSENTIAL. Use the ones that kill, heartworm, whip worms and hook worms. Because dogs can get the other worms anywhere and once they are in your grass you can not remove them. So dogs need to be protected from worms, Worms can kill. I have fostered dogs with horrible worms and it kills them from inside out. WALK YOUR DOG DAILY SEVERAL TIMES.
Respond to this video... With GSD they need thrive on discipline. Start teaching him how to walk with you properly on a leash, if he jumps up on you step on his hind feet. He will learn instantly not to jump up on people> you might have to have a friend willing to step on his back paws when he jumps up once it's done a couple times that problem is kicked! Write this down my email I can answer your questions better there rescuefido at aol dot com.
@rescuefido thanks yea i understand. But i decided to give him evo herring and salmon only now. Then when he is older i will change him to evo red meat they are both adult food but some people say it's okay to feed large breed puppies adult food. So i am just going to feed him evo. Do you agree with what i will do?
@nikeftw1 I do not agree with that approach. Your dog needs puppy building formulas so he can grow in all areas of his body. Including his heart, brain, organs, everything. At 11 weeks he should be on a puppy formula. Period I can not condone anything other than that. You can experiment later but he needs a puppy formula. IF you don't like the higher protein ones then pick one that is just normal puppy food. Evo must have a puppy formula if not go to a good brand.
@nikeftw1 I am pretty sure taste of the wild had a puppy one. IF I am wrong on that then i apologize. You need to at least for the first 4-6 months have him on puppy formula. The key is in the "formula" of puppy food. It is like baby's breast milk for a baby. When a baby is born you can't just start cramming regular food down his throat, the baby must have Formula or mothers milk. As the baby can't digest like a one year old can. You have to work the system in slowly. Does that make sense?
Respond to this video... the problem with Inovva from what i recall is a lot of vegetables. This can make your dogs tummy upset. Unless your dog is a husky stay away from the fish Orijen at first my dog hated it. But he ate the other orijen flavors and i also gave him the large breed puppy food too. So yes your on the right path. Go for it and let me know how it's going. Thanks for coming back!
I began watching the video and it looked like chuck and dons pet food outlet but I wasn't sure until I saw the price tag! What location do you shop at? I love that store I bring my dogs there all the time! We feed our dogs earthborn holistics but we have big dogs! A lot of people don't realize how important it is to pay attention to what your feeding your dogs it really does keep them healthier! We have a 80 pound dog who is 14 which is rare! So theres some proof!
@Catahoula155 Oh I couldn't agree with you more! Feed our animals right and they live a long time. And your right, it was Chuck and Don's! The only place I shop! I am going to do a more detailed Dog food video soon as many are asking for it. Thanks so much for sharing your story. And for watching my vids!
@112Bubong Oh my gosh, yes I have my little yorki/maltese on it. It is great and yes very safe. I also use the grain free one. Go for it! You can purchase it online if you do not have a store in your area. Just google the words and up will pop the places to buy it. Good luck. Glad you have found a good one.
@112Bubong First don't go to the Petsmart's of the world. IF that is your only choice they now carry Inocva and wellness, these are all natural foods. But look on the labels depending on the breed of your dog this should vary as well. But if they are sensitive to allergies i would definitely use a GRAIN FREE food. Try the more pet specialty stores in your area. Thanks for watching
Well believe it or not, people who love their dogs want to know the best dog food to feed them. This was a short preview of a thorough one i will be doing. If you do not like it, don't watch. I don't think the foul language is needed. Thanks for watching.
It's better and easier to make your own dog food that way you control what goes into whatever you make.

just wanted to make couple comments. The jelly layer you see when you open a can of food is not fat but either carageenan or guar gum which gives moist food that pate texture. Also Earthborn does not use menadione anymore.

foods I like to see promoted are evo orijen wellness core blue wilderness etc, if your on a budget TOTW and preimium edge are good alternatives.
KRISTAEWATERS 4 months ago
@KRISTAEWATERS I AGREE WITH YOU 100 PERCENT! I use Taste of the wild the lamb version with no grains. I think that is an excellent food too. IT doesn't have as high protein count as Orijen. For my little 5 pounder he doesn't need all that much protein.

could my little puppy german shepherd eat evo herring and salmon.

I have an 11-month Chinese Crested and a 6-year old Chihuahua/Sheltie mix. They are both eating adult Eagle Pack. The older dog doesnt like this food very much. Also the main ingredient is pork. As I told you before a puppy is susceptible to a lot of stuff, and if he is eating more than you think he should it could be because he has a parasite or worm.
rescuefido 7 months ago

I learned a lot of stuff from you.
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 15 huh? I would have thought you were 21! The kids these days are so smart! I am so proud of you for doing all this research on your dog that you Obviously Love a bunch. Do me a favor send me a picture of him to my email

rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido i also wanted to know if i do give him taste of the wild which fourmala is best for a gsd puppy
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 I am pretty sure they have a puppy formula. So that is what you would want to give him. Don't forget what i said many messages ago. As months go by you need to switch his food around so he doesn't become allergic to it. So just feed that poor dog of yours you can always change. What is he eating while your trying to figure it out??? Does he like it/?? ok and lastly you have not answer me as to whether he has been to the vet and is on heart worm????
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido what you mean heart worm you mean deworming. Also what foumala of taste of the wild is best for my gsd puppy. High prairie, wetlands, or pacific streams. I am leaning toward pacific streams because it has less protein. Haha thanks i really do love my dogs
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 Monthly heartworm like Heartguard plus it's a monthly pill that is essential to give as it kills Heartworm which comes from a mosquito bite, and also kills hook and whip worms. Different brands kill all heart worm but other stuff. So you want one that does heart worm, hook and whip worms. Those are contagious the last two and can come into the home on bottom of shoes. The pill is maybe 9 bucks a month but a must. But your dog must be tested first. Usually puppies don't need to be teste
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido okay i will look into that but what fourmala of taste of the wild is best for gsd puppy high praire, wetlands, or pacific streams. Please hurry my dad is going to buy it today.High praire and wetlands has 32 protein. Pacific stream has 25 protein but less meat. People say pacific stram is best for a large breed puppy what do you think?
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 Ok nike it's the high prrairie with the bison and roasted venison. My dog eats that right now and it is the only one he eats all the others he wouldn't eat. Also the fish of taste of the wild and orijen my dog did not like.
The bison and venison is red meat good for gsd.. Go for that one!!!!! I now you will be happy
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido okay thank you but i decided for the pacific stream one because i heard that 25 protein is perfect for gsds. This is my plan right now i give him pacific stream thenwhen he's 6-8 months i give him high praire or wetlands. when he's 1 year old i will give him evo red meat is that a good plan.
nikeftw1 7 months ago
Respond to this video... P.S. 32 potein to 25 no big deal not a difference enough at his age to worry about.
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido i am sorry i mean right now i am going to feed him pacific stream or high praire depending which one he likes i bought pacific stream because it has less protein but i need to see which one he likes more. Then when he's a year i will give him the evo
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 Your such a good boy for letting me know that! Thanks. keep your receipts as if he doesn't seem to like the fish bring it back and get the other. All pet stores will take it back. Good luck give him a hug for me!
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido haha thanks. I heard that the fish fourmala has something that's in it called ethoxyquin and that humans can't eat it. Is that true and does that harm the dog
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 You know I am going to have to start charging you! HE HE... Here is the deal I don't know the answer to that question. But I do know that because of toxins in the seas and oceans humans are not suppose to eat fish more than once per week. That is why my gut kept leaning you to go with my suggestions. My instinct in impeccable and you should trust it most of the time. Seriously i am usually right on when i follow my instinct. Don't foget you can get both and mix it.
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido i just read that the pacific stream doesn't have that anymore but it use to so now i am worry free
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 You worry free??? I don't really think so my nice friend. But that is okay it is much better to be overly concerned about your wonderful new puppy than to not be concerned enough! (You can use my quote!) LOL Now find out if your dad has him on the monthly heart worm pill???? Very important! God bless you!
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido are heartworm pills really important
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 YES VERY VERY IMPORTANT. If your dog gets heartworm, it can kill him if not treated. And heart worm treatment is really expensive around 1000 dollars. They dont' always start puppies on it depending when they are born. But since it's summer and he could have a mosquito bite that could give him heart worm he should be on it. Where do you live? What state? Sometimes that make a difference. But the pill also kills common worms that you do not want your dog to get.
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido ok i plan to give him revoultion it's not a eating pill. It kills fleas and hearworms. You place it on them like flea drops
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 As long as it's ok with your vet them i am ok with it. I don't like using flee meds as it's a pesticide. But on big dogs with a lot of hair I guess it's necessary.
rescuefido 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 I just came back from my local dog food store. The taste of the wild, has many flavors now and from looking at them the bags said good for all stages of life. So that is good. The wetlands one looked really good.
rescuefido 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 Also back to the heartworm deal. When you got your dog, did your parents and you bring him to the vet for a first Physical and exam??? IF not they should do that . Please tell them do not cut corners it could cost them in the long run. He must have his RABIES SHOT AT 16 WEEKS!!!!!!! A RABIES SHOT IS REQUIRED BY LAW. IF your dog nipped a child or killed a cat he could be quarantined or put to sleep depending on your county. Go to your county website and read their laws. Very Important!
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido i noticed one of your comments said a dog must have a rabies at 16 weeks? None of the vets here will do that until the dog is 6 months of age. I guess certain states/counties may be different though. My youngest dog is almost there though, just a couple more weeks. I didn't watch much of your video because of the link, but I'm glad you look into getting grain free foods. They are soooo much better for our dogs, not to mention the dogs are healthier and eat less as well.
sheeeve08 5 months ago
Respond to this video... GSD are considered like pitt bulls and dobermans. So most counties have no mercy for what they call the bully breads. I had my gsd specially trained which turned out to be a very good thing. He is perfect now. Very obedient and gets along with cats you name it but yet protective. Your job is to train your dog so he never is aggressive, but if you ever need protection he will do that naturally. You do not want to encourage aggression in any form, check ur county
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido yea but right now he has frontline plus 2 more mediacations left so after we used all of it then we will give him the revolutin so in about 2 months i hope nothing will happen
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 IF that is what your dad wants to do fine, but if your dog gets heartworm between now and 3 months from now and you give him a heart worm med while he is already infected it could severely hurt hurt him. I would recommend you dad has him tested for heart worm before giving him the revolution as that plans to be as it sounds about 3 months from now.
rescuefido 7 months ago
Respond to this video... And my question is even though your treating him for flees and ticks your not treating him for worms. I just saw a Sheppard on facebook last night that was totally emancipated and filled with worms so bad they were eating him alive from the inside out. They could even see worms in his eyes nose mouth all over they are trying to save him right now. Hook and whip worms are horrible and that is what is lying outside every where!
rescuefido 7 months ago
@ash3227 ziwipeak I have tried as well and they make a air dried grain free. The other ones are grain free too.
If you can not find a higher quality store in your town you can find these online just google them. For some reason when i try to put the web sites here they won't post. Also keep in mine for your Crested to look for products for his skin. Since they have skin that is always exposed be really careful. I know your careful. Come back and let me know how the food worked out. Thks watching
rescuefido 8 months ago
@ash3227 I think a great food is "Taste of the Wild" another one is "Orejen", look around at places in your city that handle speciality food. Look for a Odd meat, like buffalo or lamb the pork NADA i would skip that for sure. I have never seen a dog food with pork, I cant' even imagine. Thank you so much for watching.
rescuefido 4 months ago
Im currently feeding my puppy Blue Buffalo.. Is it a good food?
eeveelutions133 8 months ago
@eeveelutions133 I have not personally used it. But if your choice was that over Iams or some of the others then i congratulate you! Depending on your dog depends on the food too. See how you dog does on it, note if they scratch more, runny bowels, throwing up, and then if they have any of that you will know that was the wrong food. I think that brand makes a "grain free" formula if so i would go for that. I use "taste of the wild on my one year old manic, LOL and he eats it fine. Thks for watch
rescuefido 8 months ago
@rescuefido Thanks:) He seems to do fine:) pooping normally too:)
eeveelutions133 8 months ago
should i buy orijen large breed puppy food to my german shepherd 11 weeks please respond
nikeftw1 8 months ago
@nikeftw1 Absolutely that would be perfect. Stay away from canned food. Canned food is or in my opinion should only be used if your dog gets sick as the kibble when their stomachs are already upset makes it worse. But actually if your dog ever gets sick hold food for vets say 24 hours i think that's too long. But you can give them canned pumpkin from the grocery store and they love it and it will not upset their tummy's in most cases. I raised a shepard so please stay in touch! I'm here for ya!
rescuefido 8 months ago
@rescuefido he's not a working dog and i'm currently feeding him innova large breed puppy food. I don't think he agrees to grain so i am switching him to orijen large breed puppy food. People say it has to much protein so i'm asking you
nikeftw1 8 months ago
@nikeftw1 Oh Ok now I understand. Right on with the Orijen. Too much protein is a problem but not the way it is developed in it's form in the Orijen or Taste of the wild (i use) my dog likes it better also grain free.
But here is the deal you should rotate what you feed your dog every 4-6 months anyway. So with that the protein which isn't a problem with these foods anyway then with rotation you can use a few grains. Like Rice. Ziwi Peak is super high end and good too.
rescuefido 8 months ago
@rescuefido ok thanks but why do we need to change what they eat every 4 -6 months do we have to. Is innova good dog food. Should i switch to orijen. Thank You.
nikeftw1 8 months ago
@nikeftw1 Innova is good I have my puppy on it but his stools were loose. I think it's perfectly healthy for them but can be upsetting to the digestive system for too many veges. Reason to switch and this happened with my doberman. I had him on California naturals lamb and rice for 2 years. It worked perfectly but he all of a sudden got horribly allergic to it. I had a heck of a time getting him straighten around and lots of vet bills. The good vet will tell you to switch the food up.
rescuefido 8 months ago
Respond to this video... I would switch to Orijen or Taste of the wild if you think your dog is having tummy aches or loose stools or grains not working for him. Then in 6 months try a new but slowly mix new food in with old. Keep receipts for your food it's returnable if your dog doesn't like it. Rice can be an allergen too. You ask why switch. Example we all use toothpaste with mint in it. One day in my 20's I broke out from tooth paste turns out it was the mint! I had used mint 20 yr
rescuefido 8 months ago
@rescuefido thanks but i decided to give him evo herring and salmon thank you for the tips
nikeftw1 8 months ago
@rescuefido thanks but from what i heard the evo herring and salmon is a lot of protein for a german shepherd puppy. That's why i am asking you should i feed it normally on how much normal puppy food feed or feed less tell me how much to feed him each meal for 3 meals a day. Thank You
nikeftw1 8 months ago
@nikeftw1 Feed your puppy what he seems to like and watch his bowels to make sure they are semi firm. Now a new food will cause softer bowels so give it a few days to make sure all looks okay in that dept. It is good your feeding him 3 times a day as pupppies do need to be fed many times a day. As to how much as much as they will eat. I always sit with my dog and let them eat while i'm right there. Dogs really like this. Then when they have had enough they will stop. Pull food up.
rescuefido 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 The amount you should feed a dog on the back of the bag is somewhat of a guideline. But they always tell you to feed your dog more than you need to. A large full grown sheppard should be fed about 3 cups of food a day. But it has to do with their activity level too. If they are super active they will work up more of an appetite. It good to give them fresh bits of fresh veges like broccoli and carrots. That is the only human to use.But this is good for them
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido but sometimes he might eat to much since evo herring and salmon has 42 percent protein is that too much for a 3 month german shepherd. Orijen large breed puppy has 40 percent protein. Since evo is a adult food i am scared that won't be good for him. The kibbles are small so he could digest it as well. I think it is okay for him but i want to know exactly how much to feed him not too much and not to little
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 First you should know that the protein listed in the grain free high quality foods is not that same kind of protein in junk food. So it's not harmful that being said all dogs are different. But a gsd needs a lot of protein to grow properly into a strong dog. Plus puppies need to eat often. So if your home feed him 4-5 times a day maybe 1/2 cup or less each time. Watch his appetite as to how much he eats when. Maybe he will be a dog that likes to eat the most in am or pm. SEE NEXT
rescuefido 7 months ago
Respond to this video... So let the puppy dictate how much just keep the food coming until he is 6 months old appr
rescuefido 7 months ago
Respond to this video... SEE NEXT
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido but will too much protein make him grow to fast for the evo herring and salmon. Some people say when they grow to fast its not good for the joints. Thank You.
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 Your very good at learning the proper things for your dog. Yes that can be a concern my gsd which i fed god knows what is long time ago probably science diet and he drew too fast and had the pain in his bones for a couple years. If your worried like i said mix the two foods and use less of the high protein one. And maybe only give him the high protein one time a day to 2 depending how often you are feeding him. And then instead of keeping him on puppy formulas until the normal 12 mo,
rescuefido 7 months ago
Respond to this video... Nutro brand and for 4-6 years that i had then on it, it was a daily fight to get then to eat it.
rescuefido 7 months ago
Respond to this video... So follow your dogs lead!!!
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido I just came to figure out there is something called a barf diet which is raw meat. Could i feed my gsd puppy that
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 I personally am against that. There are too many factors that can go wrong. Some people swear by it and others their dogs got severely sick. STick with the plan we had yesterday. You need to have a little faith in your puppy he will guide when he doesn't want to eat something. Go with the grain free orijen or the other i forgot now and mix with the vegetable one. He will be okay as your not going to have him on this forever. But you need to focus on one strategy for now. ok?
rescuefido 7 months ago
Respond to this video... WALK YOUR DOG DAILY SEVERAL TIMES.
rescuefido 7 months ago
Respond to this video... Write this down my email I can answer your questions better there rescuefido at aol dot com.
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido thanks yea i understand. But i decided to give him evo herring and salmon only now. Then when he is older i will change him to evo red meat they are both adult food but some people say it's okay to feed large breed puppies adult food. So i am just going to feed him evo. Do you agree with what i will do?
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 I do not agree with that approach. Your dog needs puppy building formulas so he can grow in all areas of his body. Including his heart, brain, organs, everything. At 11 weeks he should be on a puppy formula. Period I can not condone anything other than that. You can experiment later but he needs a puppy formula. IF you don't like the higher protein ones then pick one that is just normal puppy food. Evo must have a puppy formula if not go to a good brand.
rescuefido 7 months ago
@rescuefido but u said taste of the wild is good for him and thats an adult food right
nikeftw1 7 months ago
@nikeftw1 I am pretty sure taste of the wild had a puppy one. IF I am wrong on that then i apologize. You need to at least for the first 4-6 months have him on puppy formula. The key is in the "formula" of puppy food. It is like baby's breast milk for a baby. When a baby is born you can't just start cramming regular food down his throat, the baby must have Formula or mothers milk. As the baby can't digest like a one year old can. You have to work the system in slowly. Does that make sense?
rescuefido 7 months ago
Respond to this video... the problem with Inovva from what i recall is a lot of vegetables.

@112Bubong Oh my gosh, yes I have my little yorki/maltese on it. It is great and yes very safe. I also use the grain free one. Go for it! You can purchase it online if you do not have a store in your area. Just google the words and up will pop the places to buy it. Good luck. Glad you have found a good one.
rescuefido 9 months ago
@112Bubong First don't go to the Petsmart's of the world. IF that is your only choice they now carry Inocva and wellness, these are all natural foods. But look on the labels depending on the breed of your dog this should vary as well. But if they are sensitive to allergies i would definitely use a GRAIN FREE food. Try the more pet specialty stores in your area. Thanks for watching
