@Mooseboy240 I didn't say carbs were better. If I had the funds for itb's then I would have went that route. I got a good deal on these and thought I would give them a go. I learned allot from this build; revisiting the old school, figuring out how to convert to carbs(fuel and ignition system), and overall auto mechanics.
I know this video is four years old but MAN those carbs are off balance! There's one that sound about 3/4 of a turn off. Look at how much the engine vibrates when revved,
That's got fuck all to do with 'busted mounts' it's the vibration of one cylinder firing more power than the other three.
@CheesySeb The carbs were in sync. You are hearing a big cam through a crappy camera. It vibrates because I'm not using 2 of the 4 factory braces. Relax guys, this is just the interwebs.
@xstr33tr4cerx if the engine in his car was carbed from factory its much simpler to just fit bigger carbs than change to fuel injection and on a smaller capacity engine it doenst make alot of difference to peak horse power
@0Evilavenger0 arent 4age motors fuel injected from the factory? So you should just go for ITBs like everyone else. And carbs are supposed to be a pain in the ass to tune am i right?
@xstr33tr4cerx acctualy i was slightly wrong toyota did do a carbed 4ag motor but it didnt go into the ae86, but back then alot of the engines were converted to carbs because they are simpler to tune especialy at home as all you need to do is adjust the needle position by turning a screw much easyer to tune than fuel injection, another reason is that the toyota 4age engine is based on a Ford/cosworth BDA engine from a MK2 escort and theyre carbed so larger carb kits were around
@0Evilavenger0 I chose carbs because that what was readily available to me and allot of people were doing ITB's at the time. I wanted to clean up the engine bay and make it lighter as well. A carb'd engine is easy to diagnose compared to an EFI engine with all the sensors. With a carb'd engine it's easy to go through the checklist for a running engine; fuel, spark, compression.
@imakedookie I had the lightest TRD flywheel but I'm sure the mounts and a few engine braces could have tamed the vibration and help put more power to the ground.
@Twenty47ep3 You got it spot on. Everyone is stating that the carbs are out of sync which they aren't. You can see when it reaches the rev limiter it moves around allot.
Weber DCOE? Cool... And to answer all you guys out there... DCOE are supposed to sound like that during low revs and are a bit lazy during idle. When the RPM reaches 3000 then hell breaks loose and the power never seemed to end all the way up to 8000rpm!
Probably would be a good idea to sync those carbs before you do too many more 7000 rpm blasts under no load. Of course seeing as this was made 3+ years ago, the engine has probably grenaded already, LOL!
@runescapeownsnubs Possibly 35 years in the mechanic trade and building several Toyota & VW racing engines, one of which had a similar setup with 40 DCOE's. I can *hear* one of those carbs is opening before the other. Anyway, no big deal, it's not my engine. ;)
@1tinyhachi Actually I do have a good sound system, and I'm not a moron, but I don't need them to tell this thing isn't set up right. Here's a video of one that actually is (and you can hear the difference): youtube(dot)com /watch?v=HrXMSCRHwug
Hi mate, where did you get your 304 cams from? I want to get some exhaust cams too, getting roughly 200BHP with the shopping list I made for my next project...
Awesome dude. Are those Webers or Mikuni-Solex carbs? Do you have the write up on how to convert a 4AGE to carb? I've got an SR5 hatch, so I figured I'd just go with swapping the rear, bellhousing, and engine to a 4AGE as a little project. Let me know dude.
you got a engine tourque damper? cause I noticed the throttle bodies shaking a LITTLE bit in the lower revs. You could make some smoother power with one
@pinkae86 I ended up making a high compression motor. 12:1 and I popped it good because of poor timing. On to another engine setup....13b, ported, 45 Weber carb. Stay tuned.
@FMKoTRITTONo It's going to have more power with a lighter weight as well. The new setup is almost complete. The 13b is more balanced than this 4ag that I was running.
you think carbs are better than Itbs?

lighter flywheel will help a bit, but youll always have that dip as those race cams are really designed for WOT and not much more.

rowentan 1 year ago
@rowentan The crappy idle is because of the cams and not the carbs. You're right on the money, the cams were built to make power to 9500+rpm.
