"Never, EVER, EVER! Install a EMD sound chip in a GE locomotive! EVER! " Giving that quote a thumbs up doesn't do it justice... It needs to be posted about 50 more times... GE P42's do not have EMD 645E3 prime movers.
Not only is the prime mover incorrect but the MRC system cannot replicate the HEP sounds that these locomotives generate. I challenge you to find me a video of an AMD 103 that "notches" because they don't. Those locos run at Notch 8 all the time due to their need to generate the electricity for the entire train. To date the Quantum Revolution from QSI solutions is the ONLY sound decoder that will do this. Also I imagine that decoder has probably burned up by now; yes?
Nice...right up the fact that you have EMD sound coming out of a GE.....need to get the right....otherwise, if this is N scale, it sounds a lot better than I would have thought...
i am new to this whole sound decoder thing- - is it possible to edit your own sounds with a decoder via usb or some thing like that? I could mix some sounds together in MP3 format- id probably have to go to the nearest amtrak station and ask them to let me record some idle, rev ups, genesis break "whoop-fishhh" sounds and mix them all together into loops that the decoder can pull from after being uploaded... I just need to know if its possible or are we at the mercy of Digitrax and MRC ?
It is possible to upload you own sounds to a decoder check out locksound decoders, they have a system where your able to upload your own wav files (no mp3) and have them run on your sound decoder. This is somewhat expensive to personally I'd rather be at the mercy of the manufactures too. Check out tsunami sound decoders as those one one of the best, Im forgetting the other brand that was up there.
Sounds like a CSX gp38-2 that I watch locally. The P42 has a constant monotone sound which you need a loud subwoofer to hear a low pitch from the prime mover as it chugs along. I listen to it at the Amtrak station when 98, 92, and 97 arrives in Deerfield
Do you know if the engine sound will work if I did not have DCC?

what decoder is this?
Supdude180 3 months ago
How much did this cost and where did you get it?
trainwatcher17 7 months ago
@trainwatcher17
The main body was bought for 12000 yen. It cost 10000 yen including parts cost and the processing charge to install the decoder.
It remodeled it in hobby center Kato Osaka Japan.

p32ac-dm uses a GE 7fdl-12
p40dc uses a GE 7fdl-12
p42dc uses a GE 7fdl-16
Pl42-ac uses an EMD
Is that correct.

@Shedface1 Actually, they do notch up and you can hear it, but idle around notch 3 for the HEP

May i suggest that you install this decoder in a SD40-2? I believe that you got your decoders crossed. It does sound good however.

Hey is this the MRC sound only decoder?? or was this another type of MRC sound decoder.
CMRSclub 2 years ago
Just a future heads up. GE P42DCs us a GE FDL-16, not an EMD 645/710.

Kato and MRC combo is the best I think. Too bad, Digitrax marketed thier DCC in Japan with Kato name. MRC would have been better.

is a sound decoder built into the decoder?
Espeelover 3 years ago 2
Yes, it is in 1 piece. Fits most Kato N Scale locomotive as well. I have DF200 and that's what I use. I think it's better than Digitrax.
Charaht 3 years ago 2
Come on guys, i know it's the wrong sound but it's the only one which can be easily installed with a cheap price.
darkcurves 3 years ago 2
i need to get my F3 diesiel a DCC chip. Also you messed up putting a EMD thing with a GE engine. Now it's messed up..
GhostHunterStudios 3 years ago 3
cool, but you put the wrong sound in. thats a turbocharged EMD engine. it needs to be a GE engine sound.
