  • Great song, real classic! Great uploads too by the looks so subscribed :-)

  • A cheap watered down rip- off the hollies, without the talent...totally lame, weakest effort ever.....lacks any trace of scrotes....I am so glad that decade IS OVER!!!!

  • @iorioriorio I could take this off but I'm gonna leave it on and ask eveyone to check your channel out and see what a PRAT u are. At least they have and are putting more into music than your channel is ITS A DISGRACE!. BTW.the Hollies are a classic group and I've seen them live in the sixties and they were great but this song is a classic also, they may be miming it here but they could perform it life great. I suggest you put some more effort in your channel SCROTE!

  • @memorylane1980s Rip off of the Hollies? What an ignorant sap! :)

  • @iorioriorio You obviously know nothing about music. I don't know why I'm even bothering to reply. If your mind is even 1% open (which I doubt), then do your ears a favour, and search for 'Vanishing Girl' in which XTC (aka Dukes of Stratosphere) absolutely nail the sound of your beloved Hollies, because...guess what...turns out they love them too...

  • Some of us Yanks came up on this stuff as well. Thanks, and cheers!

  • Oh my! love it! I was 21 in '81 and on top of the world lol.. MTV was just starting (when it was fun unlike now) fantastic post thanks! Ahhh... I see Altered Images to the right... OMG what a crush I had on Clare (didn't we all haha) off for some more memory lane :D

  • this is the first single i bought, had to go to a record shop to buy the 45 aged 11 :-)

  • Top fucking tune!:)

  • One two three four five!

  • Drums and Wires one of my all time favorite LPs

  • My old man used to own a boozer in this year....It was fabby, used to be a hotel, and i would stay at weekends n choose any room to stay in SCARY AS HELL,but the upside was on Sunday mornin before it opened i had unlimited plays on table asteroids/pool THE JUKEBOX n as much flat draught coke as i could swallow......an i nearly forgot the lockins where i was 11 actin as mine host behind the bar servin the locals/staff with pints of half beer half head.....ahhhhh heady days.....

  • I first saw this clip on TOTP2, probably around the year 2000. I remember thinking then that they don't make music like this anymore. And you know what, they still don't.

  • Gotye needs to be paying royalties for using XTC catchy tune from this song Senses Working Overtime.

Check out Gotye - Somebody that I used to know

he's only changed it a bit.

  • @Moonmist28 I checked out the song you mention. It sounds more like Baa Baa Black Sheep, and it's rubbish! Depressing that it has got 16 million views vs 60k for this slice of pop heaven.

  • @Moonmist28 glad I'm not the only one who thinks so.

  • memorylane your senses are working overtime posting this gem.cheers.

  • @themachman19691 No Probs

    I love it to!

    Keep Rockin!

    Ian

  • Partridge is brill.

  • An ever green.

  • XTC VERY RARLY PLAYED LIVE BECAUSE OF THE SINGERS disorder so who cares if the lip synced or not they were genius

  • I was 14 when this was on top of the pops and im 44 now ! and I didnt shed a tear cos they were lip synchin, back then they were just promoting their new track. and this is what it would have sounded like on the single if i was to buy it at woolworths ! on a sat with my paper round money !

  • Still love this song even if they are not singing live top of the pops was one of the only programmes you could see your fav bands at the time unless you were lucky enough to go to a concert .

  • '82--wow, they we're about 7 years ahead of the curve--leaving New Wave behind, and that was some feat! Kinda remind me of the DB's at this stage --not afraid to be goofily happy and melodic as hell!

  • Good to see Meg from the White Stripes on the drums at 3.05 !!

  • Doesn't it bother anyone that they're not really playing?

  • @DeathRowTull NO!

  • @memorylane1980s No what? You speak for everyone, or you don't realize they're lip-synching...

  • @DeathRowTull NO.We ALL know they are lip-synching!! and NO it doesnt bother anyone! all of the u.k. know what TOTPs was all about and it was all about miming at first, but it was fun to watch ones's favourite artist appearing on peoples favourite pop show! as there was NOTHING else in them days,I know I recorded all these and was there! The musicians union stopped it later in the decade so they had to perform live much later on and you know? they were still good!.I have the tapes to come later

  • @memorylane1980s Thought you`ld Enjoy this..Ian Anderson Really Taking the Piss! Dot.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp5x4GkS7AU

  • @memorylane1980s Lip syncing has been done in nearly every music video.

  • @memorylane1980s I love the Specials's take on lip syncing on TOTP. Switching instruments, blatantly not playing, and Terry not even opening his mouth to sing.

  • @DeathRowTull ...you got to make allowances for TOTP a great English institution. If back then they could have played on Jools Hollands show, then that would be different.

  • @DeathRowTull;

    Not in the least.

    Does it you?

  • @DeathRowTull yes. These guys were great and shoulf be heard live

  • @DeathRowTull You should see The Smiths do the same programme.

  • @DeathRowTull Doesn't bother me. I'd rather see them play live, but that;s how these TV shows were. I did get to see them live once. :) But its good to just see them. They are still entertaining even when lip synching.

  • @DeathRowTull no one actually played on Top of the Pops ... always lip synced.

  • One of my favourite bands ever. Massively underrated. Exceptional song-writing and arrangements, sounds so easy.

I guess Partridge's stage fright just adds to the mystique. If he only knew there was nothing to be afraid of!

  • @JavelBleach ..agreed!! What a great band.

  • all time favourite of mine

  • The drummer gives it a great lash.

  • Reminds me of all the snow fall we got in 81/82 as a kid ha!

  • i saw this on TOTP2 years ago, not heard it since but it always stuck with me and I've just managed to track it down!! Classic.

  • @Urbsh well I put it on 8 months ago so where have you bin! :P Keep Rockin! Ian

  • @memorylane1980s haha well to be honest ive been playing a game on fb with my brother where we try and link each other to the obscurest music we used to know and this one hit me like a mini epiphany! :P I'll check out your other vids now (Y)

  • @Urbsh Cool thx 4 passing by. They are all in order as they were shown on TOTPs starting at about Oct 1980 till what I'm up to now which is the end of 1984. I have tried to make them the best quality that you will get on Youtube so I hope you will enjoy them. Keep Rockin! Ian

  • I wish every music video on YT had a synopsis like yours. Well done!

  • One of my top favourite 10 songs.

  • Whatever happened to the lead singer on this track? I always thought he was a bit weird.

  • This is one of the most interestingly structured and well-crafted songs I've ever heard. And thanks for the great synopsis of the band.

  • ok iam just making sure here thats the original lead singner right cause in the promo for this there chubby bald guy wearing a cap on vocals same guy?

  • @401ashen Yes, Its him. You should see an XTC video from early 1978, Its even harder to recognize him from then as he had longer hair.

  • Yes, the best synopsis Ive rad on the tube. Take a bow.

And take a bow XTC as entertaining, ground-breaking musicians.

  • XTC didnt get enough credit for the awesoem music they made.. .they really are the best babd EVER!!!

  • Great post, XTC doing their best Milli Vanilli lip sync...gotta wince at Andy's rapid hand self gesturing though. A high quality pop song!

  • Wow, this has got to be the best youtube post I've *ever* come across. Not only do you have an excellent video, but your description is a fantastic synopsis! Thanks so much for posting this!

  • @BassByTheBay I just take the info from Wikipedia and edit the best bits. Nothing annoys me more than finding a great vid and then NOTHING to read when I'm watching it so I thought I wont let that happen! ALL the vids I put up are the same. Keep Rockin! Ian

  • klassik ....like no other tune!!!!

  • Dwight Schrute had an early start in entertainment. Way to go Dwight.

  • irritating camera work.....awsome song/band

  • Fantastic quality, i realy enjoyed it, i wish i was there. Thanks for the post. More if you can.......

  • ¡Que buenos tiempos!

  • ....brilliant!!

  • Great innovative use of the different cameras on the "one-two-three-four-five" line. I always remember that from seeing this on TOTP. Thanks for posting.

  • Well Done !! Egidio
