This is the pinnacle of the information age: that a great original interpretation by an obscure band in an obscure medium (steel drums!) of a rather obscure (yet legendary) 30-year old song performed in an obscure parade gets spread to the world!
this has to be the most disappointing cover i've ever heard in my life. this may have been an interesting cover of joy division and maybe the members in new order would like it but god damn if ian curtis was still alive i think hearing anying of his work portrayed in this fashion would make him want to kill himself anyway.

@mauser7mm I really like it myself, maybe because it's a completely different medium, but I think it works. I normally hate JD covers too by the way :¬)
Listening to this is very nearly a 'flat what' moment. If I weren't desensitized to absurd things the level of absurdism in this might well have made my head explode. Don't take that as criticism, though. That was a compliment and I'm thrilled that Joy Division was even covered, but holy shit. Pure insanity!
Geez -- don't folks know that the steel pan, steel bands come from TRINIDAD -- the home of calypso and soca music?? The amount of people in this thread that kept referring to reggae SMH LOL ...
Anyways, cool cover of I. Curtis' song. I admit, this surprised me too!
This is awesome. I made an mp3 that more or less straightens out all the level changes (except for the part that works well as a sort of false ending) and lets it build in intensity up through the end. It's here: media fire dot com/?iacuv8esnbst639. Give a thumbs-up if you download so others can still see the link later.
Me again--made another mp3 of this version of the song that pumps up the levels all the way through for more intensity, more of a party mix. Decided I prefer this so thought I'd share it too:
@Musashi242 I'm laughing at you in a teenage way, with my hand over my mouth...but I'm 45 years old. Could I ask, just for clarification, that you stand up proud and declare what it is that you really want to say, i.e. 'pure sacrilege' = because it's black people playing a Joy Division song on steel drums they should be blown up?
@bluemauvey its actually laughable. doesnt matter if they are black. even if it was an old church lady on a pipe organ. theyre never gonna express the feel of it, so stop disrespecting the music. and at the same time, you wouldnt see me goin to Jamacia playing regee. id get ridiculed and scorned. pure heresy.
@Musashi242 I wonder if Hooky, Barney and Steve Morris share your view. This is fucking amazing and they do it justice...how can it be disrespecting? They're Mancunian, by the way.
ya man ya nah what i is talkin aboot lol dis am da chit das what it is alright....Oh my gosh i dont know what came over me, i do believe i was having some kind of out of mind experience rofl time here ....420
i disagree with everyone who thinks this is wrong or bad. it's fantastic, and ian curtis would have loved it. this video just shows how unbelievably good joy division was. i mean, how many other bands' songs would sound so fantastic on steel drums?
Let's face it , Ian didn't spend all his time trying to slit his wrists. He had energy for his Art, and I always thought that Transmission was one of Joy Division's most energetic tracks.
WOW How cool is that!!! Thats like going to Disney World and during the Nightime parade hearing Atmosphere. And watching Mickey sing to Minnie as she is laying down on the parade float.....:)
