Spam - Sorry, but you are wrong. Not everyone can do pointer based 'snaps'. (They are not snaps, sir) Second, you are wrong about dedupe and snapshots on a volume.
Last - you are right about one thing, this is nothing new - the video is over a year old.

There is nothing new here. Everybody can do this with pointer-based snaps. It's just a scripted task, and yes the other vendors have the same (or better) scripted functionality. Also, why does the presenter discuss ASIS? This has nothing to do with de-dupe, as netapp can't de-dupe a volume that has active snaps!!
NetApp announced new storage solutions optimized for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, virtualization software that's a feature of most versions of Microsoft Windows Server 2008. The new NetApp storage solutions provide data center customers with server virtualization capabilities for increased operational efficiencies and scalability.
Van - you will be able to do things very similar with this cloning technique with any virtualizaiton technology. Or LUNs. Or Files. Or Sub-LUNs. Imagine what you could do with Oracle tablespaces....
I have customers that still don't get the whole virtual desktop enviornment. They get so confused with file locations when using email and such. But some of my customers that are engineers are fanatics of virtual enviornments for work productivity.

Hi Everyone. I am glad you enjoy the video, but this forum is not a place for competitor inspired FUD. Lets keep it on the high road around here.
Thanks!

Pretty unique! I can't see how HP, HDS, EMC or 3Par could do this with their space-efficient cloning technologies while maintaining performance SLA's

this totally kicks butt. NetApp's technology rocks. I too heard about this video, but didn't get to see it at VMworld. So sweeeeet!

I've heard of this cloning technology before but I had never seen it in action. Great video!

What is really cool about it is this - It completely solves real technical and business challenges deploying VDI in the NetApp way.
The NetApp way means that we will work to eliminate the tradeoffs, and we do not make you choose between benefits.
You can have it all with NetApp.
