Shchedryk (from the Ukrainian word shchedryi; "bountiful") is a Ukrainian ancient shchedrivka, or New Year's carol. It was arranged by composer and school teacher Mykola Leontovych in 1916, and tells a story of a swallow flying into a household to sing of wealth that will come with the following spring. Shchedryk was originally sung on the night of January 13, which is Shchedry Vechir (Bountiful Evening) to Ukrainians.
A particular thing about how Ukrainians celebrate Christmas: it is a traditional thing to walk from one house to another singing carols and wishing a good harvest, wealth to the household, health to all... (There's no such tradition in Russia). So, in the USSR, the KGB was vigilant and arrested any Ukrainian trying to perform this ancient tradition, in a way attempting to wipe out any trace of Ukrainian national heritage. In vain. As we can see, the Ukrainian Bell Carol spread all over the world
Original Translated Ukrainian Lyrics: A little swallow flew and started to twitter, to summon the master: "Come out, come out, O master, look at the sheep pen, there the ewes are nestling and the lambkin have been born Your goods [livestock] are great, you will have a lot of money, [by selling them if not money, then chaff: [from all the grain you will harvest] you have a dark-eyebrowed [beautiful] wife." Shchedryk, shchedryk, a shchedrivka, A little swallow flew.
The melody was created in 1916 by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych (1877-1921) and titled "Shchedryk". Based on an old Ukrainian folk song, the original lyrics describe a swallow flying into a household to proclaim the plentiful year that the family will have. The song's title is derived from the Ukrainian word "shchedryi" which means "bountiful." The swallow is a herald of spring coming, possibly of pre-Christian origins. The folk melody was sung in many Ukrainian villages.
As is generally known, were 5 redactions by Leontovych (1901—1902, 1906—1908, 1914, 1916, 1919). First premiered in December 1916 performed by a student choral group at Kyiv University.
i had so much homework tonight, i was gald i could finally escape into a tune this soothing and mysterious, it will always remain as one of my favorites.
Stunning piece of music. It seems to me to convey a sense of urgency and drama - I suppose we could liken that to the Nativity story if we wanted. But that aside, beautifully haunting music in its own right.
I deeply feel bad for the people who are this type of religion, they don't celebrate Christmas, Birthdays and some other holidays. They miss out on beautiful songs like this.
@icedfirion Well, thats an opinion, my friend's friend doesn't celebrate Christmas, and I had her over for a party just to celebrate the new year, and I showed her this song in the version I have on my ipod, and she said she doesn't like anything involving Christmas so she hated ths song, her family does too.
