What is art? Is such a hard question. By watching videos on youtube today about what art is, i see that in todays world there are little to no restrictions set forth and that it is a "to each his own" kind of situation. Some people claim that the distinction lies in the artists intention. While others think it has to be an expression of imagination or creativity. Andrej says the more we know the less we know, so in art is it the more we consider to be art, the less art there is?
It could be shorter, but not two times, i understand a little bit russian and the translation is big simplification and some phrases are not included at all.
@ondeia Because the Russian language is more bigger then the English language. You can't full translate what he sad you can only interpret sense and make sub. That all.
So what? ... So nothing. Why does art necessarily have to be spiritual, or even significant? Here's an idea... How about a giant weapon that fires sh-t into the emptiness of space as a greeting from the human race to anyone out there able to receive it?
i think art helps us understand one another it speaks in a language that the entire world can understand. if used correctly it can help bond this world and help us escape from the dullness of advertisements commercials billboards and flashing lights. just a constant flow of commercials, all flash and no substance. the kind of art you describe is what we are used to after art has become a vehicle for corporations to sell you things you dont need.
I wasn't describing a kind of art. Nor was I endorsing mediocrity or insincerity or materialism or anything at all, for that matter. I'm happy to be stirring commentary (which actually was part of the intent), but I fear the point was lost.
A noble intent, deepdive, but probably not the best place to do so. Mainly it's because of the limitations and/or clumsiness of the Youtube comments system. It tends to favor short and sweet throwaway comments rather than significant discussion. But I'm all for a revised comments system.
I see your point but must beg to differ with some of it. I think that YouTube and like forums is perfect for significant discussion, because it's where the momentum is. If brevity is necessary, then so be it, and that may not be a bad thing. We live in a world of information overload and sound bites. Long-winded is out. This is a perfect framework in which to practice and apply succinct significance. The world is evolving ever faster, and this medium is on the leading edge of change.
A definition only poses an interpretation of a word, so a particular definition of "art" cannot "destroy" art without conflicting with some other definition (which is supposedly the true definition). What you are really saying is that the definition of art shouldn't disagree with YOUR definition. I don't see a problem with that, but then everyone should be able to say the same thing. That doesn't make EVERYTHING art, though.
fruthermore what you are just doing it is just saying there are a lot of definitions of art...that is a fact.. but i dont think it will follow that there is not a true definition of art or a wrong definition of art from this point
... and so it follows from the idea of wrong definitions of art that... and I think we are all in agreement... true art should NEVER be:
1. uncongruous
2. meeching
3. unctuous
4. inobsequious
5. fallow
... and those who produce wrong art should be placed on a controlled list and monitored with sky-based tracking technology. And when they appear in forums from that point on, authorities should be prepared to jump out and yell, "Caveat emptor! This is NOT art!"
ah not quite... you are talking about definitions with lack of sense, in other words, you are saying that a definition ( in this case art) is or imposed or not imposed. but that way of thinking doesnt care about senses... the question do you believe in manking sense?
lets stop talking about the definitions and make something...why do we have to have evrything defined for us..pretty small minded... why can't everything just be?
We seriously need more people like Tarkovsky in the world. He died way too early. We need artists who understand and can express the things they see clearly that we struggle with.
It's a shame that the people whose vision of the world is clouded up and who struggle with the world feel the need to turn their brain off rather than explore further.

Great video, profound thoughts...and some confidential air that makes it already more charming..
Such an interesting perspective.Although he does not answer the question directly or specifically, he tries to cover the concept of being creative in general, something that is so fundamental to human existence.
There is no separation. We are creators and being oneself is the act of creating every moment and art is the means by which we can achieve the awareness of our true nature.
Ditto. Regarded by many as the best director to date and after seeing some of his films I totally agree. its a shame he only made 7 features before dying of cancer.

@ondeia , English phrases are 2 times shorter on average.

It's true, but often it's a price you have to pay.

no, i´m sorry, i insist. in subtitles they use shorter sentences, but meaning must be the same and not do not include 2/3 of the speech.

My definition of "art":
Art is the product of the following 3-step process:
1. Do something.
2. Call it art.
3. Believe it, or convince someone else to believe it.
deepdivestudios 3 years ago
oh yes, do shit, do weapons, do emptiness, call it art, so by some kind of magic you have art. Sure, very spiritual. So what?
