By the way, you don't have to have been raised Catholic to enjoy this film on a deeper level, of course, (its universal in its appeal)--but it sure can't hurt!!
At first glance u wouldn't think that a movie about a group of nuns & a priest would be dramatically interesting--but this 1 is, of course. There r a lot of life's little lessons in this quiet film--being kind to others, bending the rules, accepting,etc--its entertaining & witty & what is rare for films, inspiring. McCarey's directing is gently probing, perceptive, humorous & light--Bergman & Crosbyare 100 % natural-- & they have great chemistry (not in the typical sense). A film to cherish.
FINALLY: You do NOT have to belong to any ONE religion to go to Heaven when you physically die. Even Atheists go to the Light eventually. The only people who tell you to follow THEIR road home to God tend to be FUNDAMENTALIST FUCKING IDIOTS. They cause ALL the intolerance, the shit-stirring. God belongs to us ALL, word of honour. Wait and see. Ignore those who are on first-name terms with The Almighty. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE. Goodbye and God Bless.
WITH 2012 AROUND THE CORNER, I HOPE THERE WILL BE A SPIRITUAL UPLIFTMENT ON THE PLANET. I HONESTLY THINK JESUS IS SADDLING UP TO COME AND VISIT US AGAIN. I MEAN, JUST LOOK AT ALL THE SATANISM AND EVIL AND DIRT IN OUR WORLD TODAY. WHERE IS GOD? LOOK CLOSELY AND YOU WILL FIND HIM. BUT KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR SATAN. HE IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK. BE ON YOUR GUARD. WE NEED A NEW SORT OF SPIRITUALITY. ALL BELIEVERS WILL COME TOGETHER AND UNITE IN PRAYER TO THE ONE FATHER GOD. ALLAH IS A LOVELY NAME FOR HIM
HOWEVER, IN THE MORE BACKWARD CATHOLIC STATES OF EUROPE, THE ATTENDANCE IN CHURCH HAS INCREASED. THOSE PEOPLE WHO GO THERE MUST BE DOPEY. I WON'T GO TO COMMUNION IN CASE A PRIEST RAPES THE ARSE OFF ME ON MY WAY BACK TO MY PEW. ONLY 5 PER CENT OF SOUTHERN IRISH PRIESTS WERE PERVERTS. THE OTHER 95pc LIVE OUT HERE IN CIVVY STREETS - FATHERS, GRANDFATHERS, UNCLES, YOU NAME IT. JUST READ THE IRISH NEWSPAPERS FOR PROOF.
AND IN TODAY'S SOUTHERN IRELAND, THAT SAME CHURCH IS SCRATCHING ITS HEAD TO FIND OUT WHY THEY CANNOT GET VOCATIONS. THEY MIGHT AS WELL SCRATCH THEIR FUCKING ARSES. NOBODY HAS ANY INTEREST IN CATHOLICISM ANYMORE. IN THE POORER AREAS, JUST ABOUT NOBODY GOES NEXT OR NEAR A CHURCH. EVEN THE SO-CALLED "BETTER CLASSES" KEEP THEIR DISTANCE FROM THE CHURCH. ONLY GERIATRICS GO TO CHURCH ... IN CASE THERE IS A GOD, NOT BECAUSE THERE IS ONE.
SUPERSTITIN IS DYING DAILY IN THIS PART OF EUROPE.
WHEN WE WERE YOUNGER, WE HAD TO PAY TO GET A FUCKING EDUCATION IN A FUCKING CONVENT. POOR CHILDREN, WHO WERE BRAINY ENOUGH TO WIN A FREE SCHOLARSHIP, WERE HERDED DOWN TO THE BACK OF THE CLASS AND IGNORED BY THE FUCKING NUNS. DISILLUSIONED, THEY LEFT THE CONVENT AFTER A YEAR TO WORK IN GARMENT FACTORIES (HERE IN SOUTHERN IRELAND) AND GOT MARRIED OR PREGNANT AT 15 or 16. WE DIDN'T HAVE BLACKS OR NATIVES OR MEXICANS TO WIPE OUR ARSES WITH SO THE NUNS USED ANYONE WITH A BLUE COLLAR AS ARSE PAPER.
I'm on Ingrid Bergman's side, 100%. I'm sorry, but imagine if you were one of Patsy's classmates who actually earned their grades through hard work, only to find out Patsy passed because Father Bing felt sorry for her. You'd be pretty miffed, wouldn't you? Distributing undeserved good grades is a horrible mistake, because it breeds mediocrity and laziness. And, as Ingrid Bergman later tells Patsy, we need to fail now and then, otherwise we'd never appreciate success.
@elizabetheowynbelle you're not thinking deep enough! And you,, spouting "education"! I've studied psychology. The basic truth here is "Patsy", has "more on her plate" as they say, than the other kids! I know, because I had "two plates, full!" And I suffered during my youth, "Patsy's age"! And, like "Hathaway", I also was successful later in life, had 2 businesses! And it's the "Bing Crosby's" that smiled at me that I remember, they put LOVE FIRST,, teaching 2nd, that's the right order!
@elizabetheowynbelle I'm on Father's side. My sister was flunked by a mean teacher--she just needed a bit more help-- and it took years for her to regain her self esteem. We are here to give children a helping hand--gad knows the world can be too cruel a place. Your view is much too harsh!! Failing every now & then & growing from experience is one thing--but is far different from, ie, flunking& suffering psychological damage. SISTER decided to pass Patsy.
Ingrid 1, priest 0. I'm a Catholic and I hate Marxist priests. Those normal ones should put more effort into eliminating those Marxist by lowering their influence. All people has been made equal in terms of the value their souls and lives have but the traits (talents) they posses are NOT equal (obviously) and every human have a different role to fulfill. That's actually another example of common sense in genuine church's teachings.
Education is not just about numbers but the application of what has learn, and that the individual has proven consistent of performance of brilliance... and understanding.
what a great way at looking at education. If only more people thought this way then maybe we would have alot more self assured kids in the world. Well said Bing!
Like any of u know what Bing was like as a parent. His wife was a drunk and he has no problem letting his kids see that all the time.Your kids don't off themselves and have major drug and drink issues when u have wonderful parents.
does anybody know the film where Bing crosby plays a church man and him and another woman always argue, but deep down they are mad about each other and wont show it. I cant think if it was this film or another.
Bing Crosby wasn't an abusive parent. He was strict. Gary Crosby wrote that book, because he needed cash. Near the end of his life he would claim that it was pretty much all fictional. Plus Bing Crosby was an influence for 50 years and he played characters in movies and sang - his personal life doesn't matter as an entertainer.
For those who describe Bing Crosby as an abusive monster: not knowing the man personally, I can't say, but it bears mentioning that his son Phillip and his niece Carolyn have firmly disputed such claims. So, there's 2 sides to every story. He was probably no saint, but then, who is?? Let's not punish people for their mistakes 30 years after they are dead. He was a good singer and a likable actor, so be it.
Interesting scene. Some truth to both sides; one of those difficult gray areas of life.
This reminds me of when I was in a Catholic school in Terre Hate, IN called St. Ann's. The Sister's of Providence ran it and it was an open concept school and it helped me a great deal because I was LD and they let me work at my own pace and they were paitent with me and supported me no matter what. I loved my time with them. I wish more kids could have that kind of experience
Bing's character is an idiot. "breakin' their hearts." WHat?!
Oh, puh-leez, Bing. Get yerself a clue here!
Remember that previously in this movie he dismissed the entire school on an unannounced holiday. The whole day shot to hell on account of this character. IDIOT!
Agreed. "Oh, Sister Benedict is such a monster, failing a student who FAILED ALL HER CLASSES!" Sister Benedict's doing her job, being ethical, and giving Patsy an incentive to try harder. Father O'Malley needs to shut his sanctimonious yapper.
@elizabetheowynbelle Lets not be too hard--please watch the film again and you'll note that each character changes--accepts some of the principals of the other, so to speak, without losing their own. Patsy, as you'll remember, deliberately flunked her finals--Sister eventually sees that her graduating is the right thing to do when the parents show up. Father stiffens up a bit and Sister bends---growth--them and everyone else--that's the mark of a good film. This is a great film.
I had mostly the positive experience you did. I looked up to the sisters because they stood up for the people who could not stick up for themselves. But I know many who had very negative experiences. Because of the sisters who hurt young people, it is harder for anyone in a habit to gain trust now. May your vocation lead you to many blessings.
Everyone forgets that corporal punishment was done in public schools at that same time. And to almost the same extent.
There was comparitively less punishment in public schools but the kids were more unruly, less disciplined and less educated. Plus it's easier to control a class of 25 in public schools. Nuns ran classes of up to 70 students PER TEACHER.
I've always thought that when you build children's character and encourage them, the grades will come. I was one of those to a certain extent. Bing rocks! Schools out! Did that make sense?
Makes sense to me, only I've always thought of character building and encouragement as parenting. Many kids get that at home, but lots don't, and teachers end up teaching that instead of ABC's. Yet, we're quick to blame and demonize teachers for their decision when they "open their hearts and pass them all," but the kid only got her name and the date right. For the record, making schools into Ingrid Bergman for the sake of making Patsy learn is what No Child Left Behind is all about.
Oh don't quibble with politics when it comes to Bing. Some of the most creatively bright people in the world aren't scholastically inclined. But you gotta try nonetheless. Don't you wish there were more Bings around?
I'm in favour with Bing Crosby, the education is not for breaking hearts, because the most important is learning not to pass an exam. Congratulations for the video, it's very lovely!!
Well yes, once could analyse it from a Marxist radical position that argues that schooling is simply a means of creating workers, but there are also black subtexts about priests and students that bubble just below the surface...and if you have had a Catholic education you'll know what I'm saying.
No, I guess I really don't get any "black subtexts". I am Orthodox, my father was a priest, and I was home-schooled. And more than just Marxists might agree with Bing, e.g., Samuel Blumenfeld's "Is Public Education Necessary?"
