those subs are today's most advanced subs by far. a german officer was able to sneak into an us aircraft carrier group and emerge just 200m away from the carrier. the us admiral was raging since aircraft carriers are protected by a few subs and destroyers which all didn't notice the the german sub thanks to the hydrogen fuel cell.
that's because they are diesel electric. If the US wanted to be super stealthy, then they would swap out the Nuclear Reactor and replace it with a diesel electric....
It's more then just diesel electric. The swedes use a stirling generator, germany a hydrogen fuel cell. The electronics, the sonar, the propeller, the surface coating is also more advanced. Also germany employs supercavitation torpedoes which are 250mp/h fast and can not be jammed.
Both countries could also build nuclear subs. But they don't, because they are outdated and hybrid diesel-electric are currently the most advanced hunter subs.

The German and Swedish subs are amazing when you look into them further. The only draw back is that they have far more limited range than a Project 941 Akula or Ohio Class.

Actually There are 3 Typhoon subs atm and they will be pieces of metal by 2014.The new class of RPKSN (or SSBN) submarines called Borei is the Typhoon's successor and there are already few of them .

But the missiles they hold could had been a problem but I think they were just too expensive for the russian navy to maintain. Or maybe too outdated which is why they made a new class. It is still a cool video, even if it is a bit biased and based totally on opinion. If the Ohio class sub is so bad, then why does it carry HALF of the US nuclear arsenal? There are 18 Ohio or Trident Subs but only 6 typhoons (ever built). Were the Soviets just trying to show the US that they were willing to destroy the world? I understand that is very important for your enemy to think that you will kill the world before you will lose a war. Cool stuff!! A bit too scary though. God help us all!!

@NosferatuAaacaado Are you a soviet? The US took some scientists and combined them with German scientists to start the arms race then the USSR spent the rest of its history chasing the US. The typhoon was only so big because the Soviets weren't advanced enough to build a smaller weapon system. So they built this mammoth sub and 5 others to combat the much better Ohio class subs. My question was pointed toward the fact that the Soviets NEVER could have won a war of that kind, why build the sub?

I asked if the Soviets were trying to prove that they could destroy the world by making this submarine. I asked a number of other questions also. This submarine carried weapons that did not have to be on a submarine. The missiles could have been fired from land. So i asked a bunch of questions hoping that I would get legit answers....

As for the sub - it was made to provide a final strike capability from beneath the ice - yes, it's only a deterrent in the end - but arms race is known for both sides (USSR in particular since it took a primarily defensive position) trying to outsmart the blunt mace which was rocket nukes with innovations and bright ideas - nuke trains and TOPOL mobile launchers is the same play.

Thank you guys for your facts...if you know facts. It just seems to me that you would make your sub, then make the missile system to complement the sub. It is silly to me to make a missile system, then make the largest sub of all time for it, if the missiles have the range to be fired from land. I understand the time issue ( the sub launched missile will hit faster), but if it is strong enough to wipe out your enemy, your enemy will immediately launch against you killing all. No one wins!

I also heard that these were the quietest soviet subs ever made, but Soviet subs were known for being loud. Is that correct? The sub is quiet compared to other Soviet subs, but really are not quiet at all? I also heard that these subs could almost destroy the US while still in port. I don't get how people can judge which is the best BM Sub, but if we are going down that road, fine. @fmoa You are right, that the ohio class can carry more missiles then the typhoon, but the typhon can carry 20 missiles and not 16(look at 1:52 )and the missiles of the rsm-52 missiles are more powerfull, so that they are bigger.

@fmoa actually you're wrong. Despite their size, typhoon-class subs was (they're not in service anymore) the quiest submarine ever constructed. Furthermore ,Ohio-class subs have a different mission than the Typhoon. You can not compare an Ohio-class with a Typhoon-class submarine as you can not compare a destroyer with a carrier.
