  • This is absolutely beautiful, just had a wee greet along to it. Wish I'd been there! On a less happy note, the amount of racism in the comments below is so upsetting...

  • ach I must be gettin ald... had me bubblin... Merry Christmas and very very Happy New Year to everybody.

  • This video makes me wish I was Scottish.

  • This video makes me so proud to be Scottish.

  • This month has gotten us another step closer to Independence!!! I think we couls make it.

P.s. Eddi reader really does have an amazing voice!

  • im pretty sure she's saying SYNE ffs

  • happy new year!!

  • is it just me or has anyone else noticed that it looks like pistol handles on the side of the building.

  • なんという美しい曲(T_T)

  • Scotland the BRAVE!!! If you're not Scott, kiss my ass. Thank God I'm not irish!

  • @millan1962

Ironic, considering millions of Scots are descended from the Irish.

  • @NorthLimitation u know I presume that the Irish Isle was populated by peoples from Caledonia, Meds, Nords etc and is the most mongrel race and no bad thing for that, the same goes for the people who are born on the Scottish mainland now.

  • @millan1962 see you I think I like you.

  • This is one of the most beautiful and moving things I've heard. Who knew a parliament could be filled with so much soul and history. The original and ancient version of the song blended with the more common. Anything felt possible...... It was truly a Scottish Parliament....

  • gee, thats a horrible star-spangled banner inspired version of singing this tune! :o/ *brrr*

  • Perhaps people who don't know shit from sugar should refrain from commenting. The way Eddi sang at first was the original tune , she then went into the Beethoven variation which is the one that is more widely known.

  • This is VERRRRRRRY embarrassing. This song was NOT meant to be sung like this. It's bloody ghastly. Why do these gals try to change it. This is HORRRRRRRRRRRRRRIBLE!

  • You're ignorant to say that Salsa

  • This is the original melody of Auld Lang Syne, the modern version comes straight after if you listen on a bit :)

  • Beautiful Eddi! Rabbie would be so proud of you for what you have done with his songs. Your Burns album is one to cherish!!!! Pure Scots through and through!!! Put that in your pipe and smoke it England!!! Oh and by the way - don't you English sing or try to sing the same song at Hogmanay???!!!! Another great Scotland produced!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Lovely, but why is she saying Zyne? it's syne with an S.

  • Because she's singing in Scots.

  • Yes, and that's the reason she should be saying SYNE. It's always been a bone of contention among Scots that the English aways sing Zyne. A few years ago at the Last Night of the Proms from London's Albert Hall, a Scots conductor, when announcing the singing of Auld lang syne, instructed the audience in how to sing it properly. He made sure they sang syne and not zyne.

  • thats how they pernounce it in scot

  • No it's not! I'm Scots, living in Scotland and nobody says Zyne.

  • Scottish NOT British.

  • same thing!

  • why is eddi reader forgotten about? she has a great voice! xxx love her voice! x

  • I love you eddi reeder , you are the most beautiful singer, you have the voice of an angel, i never tire of listening to you, god bless you darling eddi.

  • hey whats sean connery doing there. i was told he left scotland for US cuz some scottish woman wouldnt let him buy a house

  • Scotland the Brave! If you don't like us, kiss our ass! The Ulster Scotts built America!

  • Aye, very good. See you.

  • a unionist??just cos i mentioned red phone boxes,so what if your a teenager,do you have a phobia about it? youre as daft as a brush son,and no,im not a wee man,im 6foot 2inches you plonker.

  • Lol. Apparently you are unable to tell that by 'little man' I did not mean in a physical sense.

Anyway, you've made your embarrassingly immature point clear. Cheerio.

  • yes,i'll say it again, edinburgh castle is one thing that is acceptable from the past,as are red phone boxes, british pier's,amongst other things that are acceptable from the past...its a fair comment nessie old son.

  • Oh, a unionist, I see. I'm afraid the one who look like an idiot is you, you're throwing your toys out of the pram over this whole thing.

Do you know what instantly makes you look like a very sad little man?

At the age of 46, you're arguing with a teenager! haha

  • So im from dundee am i.....!!!!,first I knew about it!!!....you have shown the entire world what a complete and utter berk that you are by being so wide of the mark!!!!,i live no where near dundee....IDIOT.

  • 'I can swear if i want to,the french, irish, italians do it...' probably the most ridiculous comment EVER on you tube....in youre eyes three wrongs make a right,no wonder scotland is in a mess with people like you in it.you are a disgrace son.

  • "edinburgh castle is one thing that is acceptable from the past "

Probably the most stupid comment I have ever seen on Youtube.

  • so just what do you have against the city of discovery?? at the moment dundee is bigger than inverness sonny boy,we live in the present, not the future, havent you noticed son??

  • The reason that I know that you're 46 is because it says so on your profile.

  • It's called freedom of speech, my old friend, I can swear if I want to. The French swear, as do the Italians, the Irish swear like no one else, does that stop me from visiting those countries? Certainly not, stop living in a fantasy world, oh, I forgot, 'you live in the present' haha.

So that's why you're raging that Inverness has such low crime rates and high levels of education, you're from Dundee!

Well it's being regenerated, starting to turn out quite nice.

  • did i say i was 46?? for all you know,46 could be my lucky number you berk!!!,and you have shown yourself to be ageist by stating im 'a boring old kunt',add that to youre foul mouth and people just label you as a bad advertisement for scotland you idiot sonny boy

  • you have just shamed scotland by saying 'fucking',swearing will do damage to youre country,as people from all over the world will view youre comment, doesnt that bother you??

  • edinburgh castle is one thing that is acceptable from the past due to its position, location,it is outstanding,as is beauly, which im sure you have been to old son, scotland for independence north baby??you better believe it....

  • So you find Edinburgh castle acceptable (which I do, also, it's amazing). Now, my point is that some people (most actually) find this song to be very beautiful, so leave it be.

  • why do you call yourself north limitation??

  • Two reasons: I lived in Murmansk when I made this account and I'm from Inverness. Both cities are considered to be a sort of 'end of the line' place which they shouldn't be, in my opinion. Happy?

  • its 'advice',limitation, not 'advise'..so much for the books that you read...eh!!!

  • 'Every country has drunken behaviour...,??,so thats ok with you then??..that makes it ok for us to be the same eh??..two wrongs make a right in youre eyes then??...your attitude makes me sick limitation,we should be tidying up our own backyard, not compairing it to others.

  • That is OK with me, yes, Stevo. Live fucking life you loser. You're like one of these health and safety officials who thinks we should all be having panic attacks over going to the shop.

I see you're 46, so growng old. OK, you might not be able to go out and have as much fun as you used to be, but stop being a boring old cunt and let people have you had? aye?

  • merchant city is sore on the eyes to look at my friend, the edinburgh castle area is the best in scotland, princess gardens IS a sight to behold, more should be spent on upgrading beach area's around scotland, but all mp's and msp's are corrupt, they'd rather rip off the taxpayer, inverness is a much smaller place than the big four of glasgow, edinburgh, aberdeen and dundee,so it will always have smaller crime rates than these cities, but, per person,it will be the same, scotland could be a better place

  • No, per head of capita (on average, that is), Inverness is a lot safer, I'm not comparing crude numbers here.

And it's not much smaller than Dundee, which is the fastest shrinking city in Scotlnd - it wil be smaller than Inverness in less than a generation, apparently. So much for the 'Big 4'.

  • I see that you have no idea about architecture, Stevo. But why Edinburgh castle? I thought you were obsessed with leaving our past behind us? Why would you like something like that?

  • north baby, some of us actually work for a living, dont have time to read meaningless poetry by nonentities, and yes it says ;wul tak a cuppa wine' in the song auld lang syne, advocating drinking alcohol is a tragedy in any song like this, use youre brain mr limitation,if you have one, that is.....

  • Inverness has low crime rates?as compaired to what??...dingwall!!...ive been to inverness several times and witnessed at first hand the drunken loutish behaviour in inverness, just as i have seen in aberdeen,dundee,edinburgh,glasgow,stirling.perth,etc,etc.

  • Every country has drunken behavior...

Inverness has low crime rates compared to the rest of Scotland and the UK.

Dingwall? What has that got to do with Inverness?

  • 'The neds drinking bucky in the street'? where? inverness i presume this is where you witnessed this!! caught red handed sir!!....and you stated scotland had no such problems!! och aye tha' noo!!

  • mr limitation, you are a joker sir,you pretend everything is rosy in the gardens of scotland, you are a typical 'choochter' in every sense of the word, merchant city in glasgow?? are you serious??,get real mate,i see you write most of youre words at 4am,are you on the wacky bakkie round then!!,it certainly shows in youre comments!!

  • No, I work nightshift, start at 6PM and finish at 3AM.

Also, it's 'teuchter' not 'choochter', you really should have taken my advise and read a book.

Merchant city is fantastic architecture, if you weren't so blind and naive you might notice that.

  • the 'scots english' dialect??..oh yes,its so good that no one outside scotland understands it!! nice one mr limitation.

  • auld lang syne is a pointless song, telling someone to 'tak a cup o'wine' will only add to the major alcohol problems we already have here in scotland.

  • "auld lang syne is a pointless song, telling someone to 'tak a cup o'wine' will only add to the major alcohol problems we already have here in scotland."

hahahahahahahahahahaa!!!!! That's hilarious!!! The neds drinking bucky in the street were clearly reading Robert Burns before they went out, weren't they? Haha!

Also, not once in the whole of auld lang syne is there any mention of wine, idiot.

  • so inverness has a zero crime rate then mr limitation!!!!!

  • Nowhere in the world has zero crime rate Stevo - now who's living on cloud cuckoo land? But yes, it does have very low crime rates, I would invite you up for a visit but unfortunately we also have high education standards and I don't want you to drag down the average :).

  • no tuition fees? why? its the scots taxpayers who pay for it,once again we workers are shafted, and we are still paying through the nose for the shabby looking scots parliment that is riddled with faults, put down your fancy chivas regal and your rum dipped havana cigars, and get real, scotland is in a mess with the drugs, alcohol, obesity, gang warefare, sectarian problems, lets face reality mr limitation.

  • So you think that tuition fees should be reintroduced? Were you actually dropped on your head as a baby?

I realise now, you don't hate snobbery; you hate everything.

  • you are living in cloud cuckoo land north limitation[north limitation of what??],its too wet to look at the countryside due to the constant rain, music?,you mean the bay city rollers!!,poetry??..the alcoholic burns perhaps!!,arts!![laughable!!],improving living standards??[you are having a laugh mate],brilliant architecture??,you mean the scots parliment!!!!,you are having a laugh after all mate!!!

  • Countryside: you are actually denying that Scotland has a beautiful natural landscape?

Music: traditional music, there's some fantastic works out there and some great modern music.

Poetry: Edwin Muir, Edwin Morgan, Norman MacCaig, Carol Ann Duffy, Iain Crichton Smith to name but a few. There are HUNDREDS of Scottish poets, you absolute idiot. Read a book.

Brilliant architecture: have you seen Edinburgh? Stirling Castle? Merchant City in Glasgow? Are you that stupid?

  • inverness doesnt have sectarian problems!!!!!,ask the inverness caley thistle union jack waving fans!!!....what a joke!!!!what are you all about my friend!!

  • First of all, let's get this straight: sectarianism involves discrimination between two or more subdivisions of a group which often leads to violence, for example the Catholics and the Protestents.

Inverness has none of that, I find it hilarious that you are questioning me considering I have lived her my entire life.

Also, even if Caley fans waved union jacks (which they don't, you just made that up) that is not sectarianism, since they are not attacking anyone.

  • I'm intrigued as to why I'm getting thumbs down for what is a very fair view.

Would the Orwellians amongst us like to make themselves known, or will they simply react with anoter little red figure beside my posts?

  • so,tell me,what do we have to be proud of in scotland like you say north limitation??

  • What do we have to be proud of?

No tuition fees, resulting in the highest number of university graduates per head of capita in Europe. Beautiful countryside, music, poetry, arts in general. A beautiful language, Gaelic, and the dialect of Scots English. A rich history. Improving living standards, brilliant architecture.

When you refer to 'Scotland', are you actually just referring to deprived parts of Glasgow and Dundee?

  • the song is from the past,a past from a long, long time ago,and the problems are certainly not exclusive to certain area's,every town and city in scotland has major drug, alcohol, obesity, poor diet, sectarian problems, and unless we solve these problems, scotland will forever stagnate,we havent moved on from the past in scotland.

  • Every city in Scotland has sectarian problems? Hardly, my city of Inverness certainly does not.

Besides, do you honestly think that people are ignoring people in deprived areas because they are listening to Auld Lang Syne?

    Get a grip.

  • two wrongs never make a 'Right',rabbie burns was an alcoholic who died of liver poisoning at the young age of 36,and was probably drunk when he wrote most of his poems, anybody could have wrote ;A man's a man fur aw that,an aw that...!!!!'

  • we cannot live in the past, only the present, living in the past serves no purpose whatsoever,we live in the today, not yesterday, lets sort out the problems that blight scotland, only then, can we be truely proud of scotland, lets get rid of the junkies, the drunks that fall around the streets, and the spongers, the workshy, and the blade culture,we cannot sweep these problems under the carpet.these are problems that never seem to be addressed in scotland

  • Tell me, in what exact way are people living in the past?

A lot of what you are referring to are problems which are exclusive to certain areas, and I agree that we certainly need to get these problems sorted, but how exactly is anyone living in the past?

  • lets leave this rose tinted vision of scotland where it belongs..firmly in the past, lets deal with the problems that continue to blight scotland, the drunken behaviour at any scottish town/city every weekend, the poor fish supper/kebab fizzy drink diet, the sectarian problems in towns and cities, the ever growing drug problems, the alcoholism, the workshy spongers, once we have sorted these and many other problems, then, and only then, can we be proud of scotland.

  • I disagree completely. We should be proud of Scotland because we have a lot to be proud about. All countries in the world have problems and although we definitely need to try our hardest to sort these problems out, we should still take an interest in our past.

  • im scottish and proud, but reader is crap, that perfect song was crap,if scotland moves on,it has to leave its past behind, that includes this crap.

  • Hardly. Scottish culture is a beautiful and should never be 'left behind'. Just because you feel it is 'crap', respect it as culture and let it be.

  • there should be an artist intervention like this every week in the scottish parliament. feeds the soul!

  • wonderful!

  • A lovely version of this song by one of my favourite female singers. I think that Eddi sang this with feeling.

A message to jrdouglas....congratulations on "Wild Mountainside".....I absolutely LOVE that song!

  • Wales out of Uzbekistan!

  • Yeh Wales out of! Hold on, what?

  • Scotland out of England, England out of Ireland.....

  • Anyway. Just like to say, there are no way where near enough Scottish versions of Auld Lang Syne online, this particular video is brilliant I think.

  • 4:45

Oh! Did the boring old bitch manage to pull together what appeared to be a clap for some of the most talented young musicians in Scotland? Maybe, it could just have been a twitch, she looks like she was asleep after all.

  • Shes British she doesnt like our Culture its too Scottish for her tae handle lol

  • heres a wee fact for you at 4:49 two women are applauding.

The woman in red is my mother Betty Douglas, I am john douglas, I wrote Wild Mountainside for Eddi to sing, and to encourage her to come home after she lived for years away from her home in london.

The woman in purple, immediately to Betty's left is Eddi's mother Jean, who had she been given the chance would have been discovered as the worlds finest singer. we love oor mammies x eddi and john x

  • Let's raise a cup to auld Robbie Burns on his 250th Birthday. Google it!

  • she butchers yet another scottish song

  • Are you commenting on the tune or the performance? This is the original tune to which the song was sung.

  • As an American, whose grandmother was a Scot, I believe she sang the song with feeling and soul. Isn't that what music and art is all about?

  • well said

  • i think song is really powerful, and sounds a lot more interesting than at new year's.

  • As a true scot born and bred what use is a scottish parliment..those english twits gave us a building but what can a true scot do with it???LONG LIVE SCOTLAND

  • LONG LIVE SCOTLAND!

  • I'm old and tired and far awa but this 4th great great grandson of one of the victims of the clearances wishes before he dies to have a passport with the Lion Rampant ,or the Saltire on the cover, which of these matters to me not , as long as it says "Passport of Scotland " , Albainn Gu Brath !!!

  • Beautiful, Rabbie would be proud (and he'd probably try to shag her too!)

  • Heehee!!

  • Reminds me of the classical music used to "calm" the patients in One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. Cheese.

    Bring back Colin Fox.

  • That is a wonderfully disrespectful comment. I have to hand it to you. If you are going too upset a whole nation...why tip toe around! Hahahaha ya cheeky sod!

  • On second thoughts...I just watched your Richard Thompson 'favourite' and my god it was like watching two crippled flies trying to crawl up a window pane....or should that be pain? Jesus christ man, bland was added to the language for songs like that.

  • I visited Scotland for the first time last June on a Rick Steves tour. My tour guide introduced us to Edie Reader, among other lovely Scottish performers. This song brings tears to my eyes, and makes me want to return again to my ancestral hoe.

  • Well there is no better time than the coming year! Google "Scottish homecoming". Hope you can make it =)

  • This has to be my most favourite vid on here, it's fantastic, oooh the goosebumps, makes me proud to be a Scot! I love that she stuck with the Scots words for the most part...awesome!

  • why do i think that if all politicians did this the world would be a better place, put some humility in their hearts

  • fantastic

  • Love this Country!!!Love this great song!!!

  • Her starting w/ the right tune would be nice. An "artistic" interpretation of an ancient traditional song invariably sucks. Kinda like when someone does their creative interpretation of The Star Spangled Banner at the beginning of a sports event.

  • Too bad you didn't read down before posting. This IS the right tune, the ORIGINAL way it was sung ( minus the tech. problem ). Kind of like the fact that the Star Spangled Banner's tune has changed over its history too. Go to the Smithsonian for a chance to hear the original. I'm Actually SAD that she decided to sing the "popular" version AT ALL, it's a travesty to Robbie, but she makes me proud of my Scott's blood.

  • thats no way start parliment, it outta be pipes and haggis, double on the haggis

  • After twenty years away. i will be returning home this year.

  • Welcome back to gods country!

  • Yeah, welcome back to germany.

  • LOL!

  • they can jazz it up anyway, i still think that dec. 31, with all you r freinds, singing an out of tune barely recognisable version of Auld lang syne, is th best way to sing it lol.

having ged tht tho it is a lovely version, just a bit slow for my taste

  • Vive Rabbie. Vive Scotland. (And I'm not a Scot, but an Aussie.)

  • wait did i see Sean Conery there??? at 3:14

  • Yeah... He's a member of the Scottish Parliament

  • This is actually the original way which the song was sung, pitty about the technical fault in the video but as I said before: Proud to be scottish.x

  • Proud to be scottish...x

  • That was very moving, and I'm not even Scottish. Thanks!

  • I was delighted when I found this wonderful blending of the old and new sung so beautifully. It is understandable how some want to hear the "familiar" have difficulty with the "Auld" sound. The beautiful arrangement of the solo voice blended with the chorus of the familiar melody is most pleasing. My heart is touched warmly by this variation. Other Scottish singers such as Jean Redpath also sing some of the "unfamiliar" tunes to familiar Robert Burns poetry. Other versions here on YouTube.

  • Why "deconstruct" such a beautiful melody? What's the point? I have never understood professional musicians who boast technical mastery but lack common sense. The original melodic line is what gives Auld Lange Syne its emotional power. Too many liberties with it and one is merely engaging in self-defeating behavior.

  • Sorry mate, but the tune you know is not the original. This is. Listen and learn.

  • Midway through the clip the song is sung the way you say is "not the original."

Whether that is or is not the original, that's the melody that everyone knows, that everyone loves, that has the melodic beauty.

I have listened, and learned. I've learned that sometimes something that is good evolves and gets better.

  • You are spouting utter nonsense mate.

  • The bottom line?

Auld Lang Syne is an immortal melody, instantly memorable but hard to forget, beloved by Scots and non-Scots such as myself alike.

It takes nothing away from it that the version the world loves is a later variant or evolution of the original.

  • that was really weird. not good

  • wan way tae kill a fuckin legend song

  • I liked the way she sang it. It sounded great to me! It amazes me sometimes how differently people see and hear the same thing.

  • What the heck is this, the ppl in the seats were looking around like whatever,

most arrogant ppl i have seen yet.

  • technophiles is right! Horrifffic! This woman is into Scottish people feeling sorry for themselves, and she is exploiting this supposed national sentiment and youre all buying it! at least 17,336 of you. (actually, I see a lot of you arent!)When she stands up, looks us in the eye...i'll be a fan too.

  • visited the parliament today, have to say slightly dissapointed, the building is full of dischordant shapes and lots of brutal concrete which is starting to discolour. i expected something more inspiring for what it cost and what it represents och well

  • Eddi,

You are the star in Scotlands crown!

    Kevin

  • Yiz kin aw gae tapsalteerie gin ye dinnae like it, bit I think it's magic

  • that is horrific and the last thing people who're tryna' run our country wanna sit and endure. I love it how she has to go back to the normal tune when everyone else joins in instead of her dodgy version, haha.

  • lmfao, is that sturgeon?

  • How truly wonderful that was! That brought a tearto my eye! Truly marvelous!

  • Sean Connery at 3:14

  • She murdered that beautiful song. Robert Burns must be rolling in his grave !!!

  • She murdered that beautiful song. Robert Burns must be rolling in his grave !!!

  • each time i listen 2 this song it makes me cry because its so beautiful

  • what a great performance...

  • Do any of you know if this event took place during the re-opening of the Scottish parliament in 1999? After all, is this the original version written by burns or not?

  • This is the opening by the Queen of the new Holyrood Parliament building a couple of years ago, not of the 1999 parliamentary session. Burns wrote his verse to fit traditional Scots airs current at the time. Eddi Reader sings Auld Lang Syne to a different tune to the one we use today and in this version so that everying could join in, she starts with her version and moves into the usual one half way through.

  • Find this deeply moving. Everything was possible and all of it was strangled by the small minds of the local councillors that took control. Eddie Reader is the best....

  • Great song pity it will fall on deaf ears such as the Labour party.

  • Auld Scotia! Am prood o ye.

  • Beautiful...

  • gives me the shivers... so touching... What a great moment!

  • This should be an example to the rest of the world

  • Simply beautiful...

  • why are they singing the english version rather then the scottish?

  • That's not an "English" version; it's the original tune that it would have been sung to in Burn's day.

  • Um, she said "dear" instead of "jo" after the first verse, sometimes pronounced it "since" instead of "sin," and ommitted the second verse. Other than that it's precisely as Burns wrote it.

  • oooh haha ye can see my daddy there!

  • Beautiful!

  • Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot and days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we'll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne. Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot and days of auld lang syne? And here's a hand, my trusty friend And gie's a hand o' thine We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet For auld lang syne
  • The song, "Auld Lang Syne," is sung at the stroke of midnight in almost every English-speaking country in the world to bring in the new year. At least partially written by Robert Burns in the 1700's, it was first published in 1796 after Burns' death. Early variations of the song were sung prior to 1700 and inspired Burns to produce the modern version. An old Scotch tune, "Auld Lang Syne" literally means "old long ago," or simply, "the good old days."

  • missed the bagpipes :-/

  • A most beautiful voice!

  • She's one of the BEST! -pity there isn't a better quality clip of this though.....

  • That is a perfect world: An wonderful singer in front of politicians. I hope Eddi touched their hearts.
