Thank you SO much for this tutorial. I'm a machine quilter and I've had people try and explain this method to me but it just didn't click, now I know what they're on about! Video was quite clear and instructions were very easy to understand. Now I don't dread doing the binding as much as I used to (let's face it, it's not the most fun part of doing a quilt is it?). Must go and crack on with all those tops I've never finished haha. Thanks again!
I finished my binding and my quilt! I had a bit of trouble folding it over in some spots and 'missed' the binding with the stitches on the back...:( but the mitering worked very well! thanks!
Thanks so much, this is the BEST machine binding tutorial ever!
I'm using the Zig Zag Stitch in front. Should the edge of the binding be in the MIDDLE of the zig zag stitch or should it be on the left, with just a tiny bit of the stitch on the quilt top and the majority of the stitch landing on the binding to the right?
Also, how do you turn the corner and secure the mitered corner with the zig zag stitch?
I wish I would have seen this (part 1 and 2) 6 months ago. I made the most beautiful quilt but didn't know how to do the binding. So I sewed it on the best I knew how and it ruined the whole look of the quilt because it wasn't sewn right. Thanks for the 2 videos, now I can do it right!!
@Linda7171 - To attach the binding, you are stitching mostly on the binding, through the quilt top to the other side. You can line up your zig zag stitch so that one side of it will swing off the side of the binding and into just the top so the edge is totally secure. I hope that makes sense!
WOW! Thank you! I am a new quilter, making my third quilt for my new niece. I wanted to try making my own binding and bind the quilt. Your technique is fabulous! All my corners came out great! Your instruction is clear and easy to follow! Thank you! Thank you! And thank you!

I am a teacher. I know a great teacher when I see one, and you did an awesome job!! easy to follow and you showed great details! Thanks. I too am a beginner and look forward to many quilting projects!!
This is a great video! you have filmed everything clearly and we can actually see what to do. thanks for posting this. You explain everything very well and this video is a help to quilters like me who hate to do bindings because we never learned how to do a nice binding.
Leah, I can not tell you how helpful your videos have been! I am a brand new quilter, and have taught myself everything via youtube and other sources. Out of all the videos I have seen, yours have been the easiest to follow and the least intimidating! You Rock! :)
@lcvday i usually let it slip thru my fingers with just a little grab here or there to keep it lined up, that way im not puting to much tension on it and i dont have to stop at all
Excellent video. Some great ideas there. I especially like the stitch used for attaching the binding. If you are uncomfortable with a seam ripper, you might want to use a tailor's awl instead.
Oh my god, this is the best binding turorial I have EVER come across. I just started quilting and I'm not a perfectionist (yet) but my binding skills were terrible so was looking for a quick & easy fix. I'm so glad I came accross this & will watch it again as the joining of bindings in the middle will take some practice. Thanks so much.
The joining the beginning with the end does take practice (every once and awhile I mess it up completely), but as long as you keep your tails long, you can always rip it out and sew it again.
I plan to do a better tutorial soon on finishing the binding by hand. Machine stitching it down is fine if you don't plan to show the quilt, but if you do, you really need to hand stitch it. Binding is one of the first things judges look at!
Perfect - just what I was looking for! Am just about to bind my first quilt and couldn't make any sense of the instructions in my beginners' quilting book. Now I should be able to get it finished before my niece is born - thank you!
Thank you so much! Am making quilts for my kids for the holidays. I've made quilts before but the binding has always been something I've dreaded doing. This was a much needed tutorial.
Leah, You Have saved me from hours and hours of blind stitching and hurting fingers. I have watched several of your videos and I think that I have learned some much already. I look forward to sitting down and doing this binding technique on a quilt that I am working on. Again Thank you so much, Amanda NC

Do you stitch on to the quilt top or at the edge of the binding?

What color thread do you use? matching the colored fabric, clear thread? Buttonhole stitch is brilliant!! I never considered that.

what is the reasoning for wearing gloves to sew with?
TEEWEE01 2 years ago
I wear machingers to gain more control over the quilt and grip over the binding.
Without the gloves, the quilt will seem to slide through your fingers and you may struggle for control. That's just my experience anyway!

Best tutorial on applying bindings I have seen anywhere. I especially like the way you joined the bindings at the end. Looks great.
