The mammoth is in the pen that Garcia Bernal's character receives from his business partner. The pen contains mammoth bone and is exorbitantly expensive. The price or value of the mammoth pen is discussed for the second time towards the end of the movie. Lots of symbolism there as well. Also, mammoths of course looked a lot like modern day elephants, and elsewhere in the movie there's an interesting scene with Bernal and an actual elephant.
What a wonderful movie. I can't stop thinking about it.
Don't understand why some critics talk about hollow characters and typical melodrama. I see humans being humans, and the awful truth about how we as a "global" society treat children.
