Whenever my town replaces their sirens (our Model 7s are in great shape) I really hope they get either a directional Whelen or one of these. NOT a 2001 or an ATI.
Not quite as awesome as they used to make, but these are cool compared to other new sirens. Beats the hell out of anything Federal Signal is producing, that's for sure.
Mechanical. The camera I used has a lousy audio pickup which the siren peaked out, producing an electronic hissing/ringing effect.
Another way to tell is that it has a full wind-down. Electronic sirens always cut out before the tone drops too low for the speaker drivers to handle safely.
The T-128 is mechanical? Wow, I always took them for electronic since there really isn't much room inside them for a blower and whatnot...
I'm filming one of these tomorrow, we have a ton in our city and one only about half a mile from my house, but I was wondering about what distance were you from this siren upon filming?
No blowers on these. Just an 8-port rotor, and a motor to drive it and the rotation.
I was about 200 feet from this particular siren. If you have good zoom capabilities, play it safe and get farther back. Too close and you'll get crappy audio.
My own filming of this siren this morning was unfortunately cancelled because a nasty storm came through the area around test time. They (obviously) aren't going to test them during an actual storm... sigh. Gotta wait another month now, not sure when the re-test date is.
Yep. The old one was an ACA Alertronic RE1600part of a siren system installed in the 1980s. Archon2561 has a video of the one that was at this location. The old Alertronic system was replaced starting a few years ago and now New Berlin has all T-128's.
i have hered synthesied versions of various sirens on youtube (like the synthesised thunderbolt siren) question is..how can someone tell which one is the real mecahnical siren motor and which one is the synthesied computer generated sound?
Yep. They're all gone now, replaced with T-128's. New Berlin was encountering serious glitches with the old Allertronics which necessitated their replacement.
Although they look more modern, the sound is produced mechanically. Inside of the round part with the holes are the sound-making parts, basically two slotted barrels, one stationary, and one spinning inside of it. Through centripetal force, air is forced through the slots. The slot is opened and closed in a fraction of a second, cutting off the air abruptly, creating a "popping" sound. At about 3500 rpm, it produces the sound you hear. In the back are two motors that power siren and rotation.
2001's are actually a much different design, with the motor being housed in the cone inside the projector, and the rotor/stator assembly being inside the box-shaped part at the back of the siren head. T-128's are the opposite, with the noisemaking parts in the projector and motor in the back. It should also be mentioned that the lower pitch of T-128's carries a lot farther (in addition to sounding much better) than the super high-pitch of the 2001.
I personally like the Allertor 125's that used to be on top of the firehouse. I can remember many days working out of that firehouse and feeling that siren going off on the roof, it was that loud. Definitely can agree that these sirens a big improvement over the Whelen electric sirens that were there for a while. Those things really sucked. ACtually, the original ones looked like they sucked because they looked like a vacuum cleaner. I miss those old ones.
Yeah, the Allertors were pretty cool sirens. I have a siren at home that sounds just like one called an ACA Howler. Also, I'm planning on getting an Allertor later this year for my collection. The electronic sirens weren't Whelens, though. Those were ACA Allertronic RE1600's.
I live in a city where we have both 2001's and Whelen 4004's and the whelens kick the 2001's ass! They sond so much better and are much more versatile. I will agree with you on the ATI's though they sound like a dial tone on a stick!
I noticed something about this siren. It starts off with the way it sounds then later during this video, the pitch got lower. Is it suppose to do that?

why do u post videos like this? is there a point? watching a tornado siren spin in a circle and hurt my ears is not something i would like to spend my time doing so why even post it?
I post these videos because there are lots of people out there who ARE interested in sirens. Do a search for "tornado siren" and see just how many videos and fans there are of them. I'm sure that there are many people who find your interests extremely boring as well. If you don't like my videos, don't watch them and please don't leave stupid comments like the one you did.
I agree 100%. You know who cares if we like sirens. Its just some kind of thing that we have that makes us want to listen to them. It makes me feel better.
Thank God someone is interested in these sorts of issues. Some people just don't care about warning sirens. They are just considered a nuisance in eyes (and ears) of some but where would we be without them.
I would rather have them than not. They're intended to warn people outdoors, and I've been alerted of oncoming severe weather by them while I was outside many times. I'll often hear them inside, too. Luckily, where I live people take severe weather seriously, and sirens are greatly appreciated.
I think they were just aging. They were around since the late 1980's or early 1990's, so they just weren't as reliable anymore. And as a tornado prone area, New Berlin needed a reliable siren system, hence the upgrading.
Yep, this siren use to be an Allertronic. I like this one better tthen the allertronics because these sound cooler. It also sounds just like a single toned thunderbolt.
Yes. Waukesha county has been hit by powerful tornadoes in the past. There was an F4 that killed several people in the 1980's. So the danger does exist, requiring good warning systems. Unlike Milwaukee county which tests and activates sirens for the whole county on a common system, Waukesha Co. municipalities own, maintain and test their sirens individually. New Berlin has the best and newest system in the county.
Great Video! At the beginning of the video the sound seems to be a little higher pitch than at the end. About how high above the ground is it mounted?
1.Thanks! 2.Yes, the power fluctuates enough to change the pitch of the siren a bit. 3.This siren is mounted between 30-40 feet above ground level (about the normal height for a siren). I shot the video from accross the street in a parking lot, several hundred feet from the siren.
Thanks for the info! We have never seen one of these except on the internet. When one around here needs to be replaced or added due to city growth, it's the FS 2001's. Not one of my favorite sirens but better than nothing.
