The engine was built to run in a late model stock car. One of the rules to keep costs down (didn't work) was for all engines to run a 390 cfm carb. Same theory as NASCAR with the restrictor plate. Restrict air comming in and the engine will make less power.
only rules i've ever saw that seemed to work was , hydraulic cam , cast iron heads , 500 2 barrel , not that it made for great racing action ,, but it leveled the field pretty good
406 is the new 383. 427's and 434's are just greedy!!!!

That is one bad sounding engine. How did you get so much power with a small carb?
