It is perfection in his style so many at his level that can bring it but he puts heart & soul into it And he is very humble and helpful and unselfish met him at clinic just amazing

This is VERY close to perfection. He feels what he plays, the solo kind of "breathes";somehow everyone, drummer or not, understands that he not only has the hell of a fantastic technique (both hand and feet) but also understanding for musical ideas and phrasing. I think you can't expect much more from a drummer, he has it all and the endless list of artists he played with proves that.For sure one of the best, if not the best!

@Bomenpulp First, there is no such thing as perfection. Second, there is no such thing as "the best". Simon Phillips is a GREAT drummer. This was a GREAT drum solo. Phillips has great ideas and technique. But guess what? There are a LOT of drummers in this world that have those same traits. Each has something different to bring to the table. ALL have evolved from those who came before them.

this solo should not be described as 'free form'! almost nothing is without form, in this case Phillips uses a number of grooves as a form. the correct terminology would be just 'free' as he messes with the time (rubato)

My favorite part is 5 or 6 minutes into it - when Simon slowly hits each tom in succession- they are tuned perfectly! The cymbals sound great, too.
