  • If this version of KC was a deli, Belew would be the guy standing behind the counter, talking to you and slicing the meat, and Fripp would be the quiet, sullen owner standing against the wall and giving employee-boy the stink eye

  • I listened to this all the time...now I can see the wondereous interaction between the artists!

  • These are words with a little d this time! Adrian Rules!

  • adrian bellew wishes he was david byrne so hard

  • My #1 all-time favorite band having a truly great moment.

  • Jerry Was a Racecar TAAAAAALK, IT'S ONLY TAAAAALK

  • @Pexster jealous.

  • @Pexster I couldn't fuckin stand him either... but he grows on you in a weird way.

  • Where's Andy Summers? ;-)

  • King Crimson is the father of Primus

  • Still my favorite lineup of this band...

  • THE GREAT DECEIVERS(KING CRIMSON tribute band) play on Friday, January 20th, 2012 at 10pm at The Universal Bar and Grill in North Hollywood near Universal City. Don't miss them. They play songs like Starless, Lark's 2, Exiles, 21st, 3 of a Perfect Pair, Vrooom Vrooom and Fracture!!!

  • @Elyodachido, Oh man, I wish I could be there!!!

  • Where on earth did Talking Heads get their inspiration from?

  • it´s like Gob from Arrested development

  • This is great footage!

  • What guitar is Fripp using in this?

  • @priceischrist It's a Roland GR 300 one of the early Roland guitar synths.

  • @BlackWhirlies The synth part is called the GR-300. The guitar is the Roland G-303, made by the same manufacturer Ibanez used in the 80s.

  • Adrian Belew... feedback master!

  • Amazing to hear Adrian have to recreate his speech on Thela Hun Ginjeet that was a tape on the record.

  • This is the prototypical Primus song.

  • @SonOfYoungwood primus was influenced by king crimson not viceversa

  • @fatsjosh - what I meant is that this laid the groundwork for the kind of music Primus would perform in the 90s.

  • @SonOfYoungwood i see check out buckethead im almost certain fripp and king crimson had to be his biggest influence

  • Comment removed

  • Great slice in time. The whole band looks happy.

  • HAHA. Belew looks like he stole David Byrnes suit! Fits him better anyway.

  • s..t, this is so amazing. close your eyes and you would freak to think this is being done live

  • robert fripp is Mr normal Mr nice Mr average... what the hell is he doing producing this stuff?

  • @mensamoo from what i've heard he's an asshole. a genius asshole.

  • @deliman Reclusive and opinionated can be easily mistaken for asshole. :P

  • @eddievhfan1984 Reclusive + opinionated - fascist = Canus + Boy - Cow to the power of -1.

    (or something)

  • @mensamoo lol what?

  • @scotto132 this is prog at its damnedest. Its not hip. its not TOTP. hope not anyway. If this got into the charts it would lose all credibility. They are real musicians

  • is this really a video from 1982? i think it is from december 4th, 1981: on ABC TV

  • know how

    can do

    king crimson .

  • best King Crimson lineup

  • what's the second song called?

  • @hythoras909 Thela Hun Ginjeet

  • Great to see the boys again!

  • Aaaaaaaaaaaa…mazing!!

    Destray a Music !!

  • I love their style

  • just saw Levin , Belew and Pat on the 2 of a perfect pair tour . AMAZINGLY good ! this cat Markus did the Fripp parts on his homemade 8 string "warrr guitar" . holy cow was it good . Belews new drummer , SMOKES , and Julie Slick on bass guitar , very , VERY humbling ! highly recommended live show , dont miss Belew live .

  • Amazing wksufreshair,i didn't even know a copy of this existed.I listen to this album(Yes I said album cause thats the format I originally heard it on)still. Frip Belew masters of the Elec Guitar,Levin inspired my roomate to get a stick. Bruford helped him set up his drums at the Golden Bear 1983 when he jammed w/ Patrick Moraz.(YES,Moody Blues) the technology of that time .really influenced the music, guitar synths, roland amps, midi It was the birth of digital in many ways F-N loved it!!!

  • Robert Fripp its obviously cuckolded by Adrian Belew and Tony Levin in this version of Hela Hun Ginjeet

  • Like like like like fuck I'm weird ya!

  • I can't believe this is 1982. It sounds like it would have to be much more recent. The stick that Tony is playing just doesn't seem like a 1982 instrument. But I know it is. That's why KC is KC.

  • can somebody explain how he does the feedback thing @7:40 ? mind=blown

  • @coskbeatz

If you notice, the back springs of the guitar are not covered with plastic, the metal springs plus some weird effects cause the feedback near the louspeaker

  • The singer looks like Will Arnett

  • Belew enjoys it so much it makes you enjoy it that much more :)

  • fripp is smiling o.o

  • love the drumming and belews effects

  • Jeeez this band were good. And a four-piece! I first saw Belew with Bowie in 1978, and he nearly upstaged The Dame. He is a fabulous, energetic, humourous and incredibly gifted player. And - did I get this right - did Fripp SMILE??

  • what songs are these and how do i replace my blood with them?

  • I love the fact that they wear suits.

  • I love how at this point in their history, Belew was so obviously the front man, but Fripp was so obviously in charge.

  • this rules rockdom/'experimental-dom' - freaky-kewl - all while rainbows giggle in human terms for the duration of elephants in fits of fickle...

  • i hear king crimson in primus. not the other way

  • frickn amazing talk

  • Yeah It was funny, I was wondering how Les ever fucking came up with the bass line in Jerry was a racecar driver but after I heard this the first time it obviously influenced him. Crimson has also influenced bands like Nirvana and Tool.

  • huh

  • Fantastic musicians and music, but frivolous, superficial. The real King Crimson, the dramatic and ultra creative Crimson was from 1969 to 1974. This line up, great technique, but sorry as to composition nothing compared to the 1969-1974 era. Bellew trivialized the band.

  • @JoniCrimsoFan Trivialized? This lineup gave birth to "Frippertronics"....it had an edge that was absent in the earlier years...Belew was a perfect fit.

  • @JoniCrimsoFan How the F so? Frankly, some of old Crimson is so obtuse, it's difficult to listen to.

  • @PeterMayer I If you don't like the 69-74 Crimsons, then you don't like the REAL King Crimson. I can more or less understand that as a generational issue. But saying that it's "obtuse" is like saying that jazz, John Coltrane or Ella Fitzgerald are obtuse... I think you must learn some more about music.

  • @JoniCrimsoFan the fact that you would bring up the later artists in this conversation pretty much says you realll don't know shit about music. And when you've written as many songs as I have, then you can talk to me. I never said I didn't like all of early King Crimson. Just some of the later stuff is demanding to listen to and doesn't have enough flow for me.

  • @PeterMayer old KC were not obtuse, just looooooooooooong. nor were they "the REAL King Crimson" (peter). geez people. I like the entire library, enough melody and structure to bring you back for the conclusion (old stuff), concise but miles-beyond anyone else (new stuff)

  • @JoniCrimsoFan Bring down your aggressiveness mait, that only shows your incapacity to discuss. To state that I don`t know a "s..it about music" Just how can you know? You don´t know who I am. And I have said some things in my comments that show you the contrary. Unless you don't know or have never heard Coltrane or Fitzgerald. Don't worry we don´t have to have same tastes over music. I just wanted to give my point of view about KC. Nothing personal you like this Crimson more, I just don't agree

  • they don't make em' like this (or Gentle Giant) anymore....BIG sigh !

  • five people weren't ready to enter the court of the crimson king...

  • Holy Crap, is that Fripp smiling!?

  • Go Belew Go!

  • Fripp smiles in this video, that's why I love it.

  • WWWWWWWHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH

Belew at 0:56... the shape of things to come?

  • That is some funky shit!!

  • I'm convinced that Robert Fripp's right hand is a machine.

  • Robert Fripp is the classiest man to every play the guitar

  • 5 without taste 4 the real music....

  • yeah it does sound a bit like primus DMV

  • @zeemanjr More like Primus' DMV sounds a bit like King Crimson. No KC=No Primus.

  • loved it then and love it now!!!! Ack Ack Ack!

  • ITS GREAT I LOVE YOU

  • Long time since I first heard this and it blew me away. Especially the 'warmth' of Elephant talk

  • Really sounds like the Pork Soda/Sailing the Seas of Cheese eras of Primus.

  • anybody hear primus in this song?

  • @JUMBOpin I was talking to my step-dad about how Primus must be heavily influenced by King Crimson when we were watching the DVD this is from the other day. :D

  • @JUMBOpin Surely you mean: anybody hear King Crimson in Primus? Actually you should probably be asking that question about a lot of newer great bands. The Crimson's influence is one of the most fortunate music epidemics to spread across the world of music in a long time.

  • Beardyman liked this video!

  • great suits

  • "LIKE" isn't strong enough. Adrian Belew was and is an inspiration and a band full of maestros, what a moment when I first heard the album Discipline!!!

  • Saw this tour in Columbus. Good show. Fripp went out and sat with the guy working the board. Cool.

  • Probably the first time I've seen Fripp crack a smile. And I've seen a lot of pics and vids of Fripp over the years.

  • veryoneisondope Exactly! I don't recall him ever smiling! I never noticed his left hand position (thumb always behind the neck, classical style) until seeing him next to Adrian.

What a great album, great lineup ... One of those albums, when you first ear it you say " .........!"

(note: 'ear it" not an allusion to the English, not a typo. more of a very bad Don DeLillo ... I really got to get out more ..)

  • esto si es música de verdad!!

  • awesome polyrythyms.... ELEPHANT TALK!!!! lol

  • Awe some......

  • Adrian Belew sure looks like he's having fun

  • Pelao Jinjy, Pelao Jinjy!

    Sácate un teeeeé, peelaooo Jinjy!

  • Fripp always has this look like "you guys better not fuck up"

  • That was amazing. Love King Crimson. Great musicians.

  • NO LIKE? Well, please go back to your muzak. Tons of Spears for you.

  • TALK!

I love how he makes his guitar do elephant talk at like 2:20

  • The 5 people that said NO LIKE, they don´t know nothing of music, this group is fantastic.

  • sharkies night ha ha ha ha ha ha ha laurie anderson wife of lou reed and so the circle is round

  • So unsexy, so bleeding good. What a wild wall of musical hijinx and mayhem. Love it.

  • .....unreal

  • Wow. I remember King Crimson's "Elephant Talk", but I had almost forgotten about "Thela Hun Ginjeet". They were on the ABC show, "Fridays" when they performed these songs. I saw this very same show on TV when I was in high school. "Fridays" had some great bands (Devo, The Pretenders, The Clash, The Cars, etc.) during its run from 1980 to 1982. Thanks for posting this! I wish "Fridays" were available on DVD. Michael Richards, who was a regular on the show, won't allow it for whatever reason.

  • pink panther strat cat from the future!!!!

  • "Criticism--who needs it?" And a head shake and a big smile from Fripp.

What a splendid solo from Belew.

    This is a jewel.

  • F'n genius!

  • Babble.. burbble. banter.. bicker bicker bicker.. BELEW!! BEAT!! Great album from Crimso and a nice little live clip. Thanks for posting this

  • Me I am Europan, inspired to listen to good music..I visited this side on youtube I just made once reading allsides and wondered, when I hear King Crimson comparing to another ( exept that song!!!!) really I associate JETHRO TULL! Me I adore King Crimson!

  • Musica para musicoss hejejejeje

  • King Crimson was to a Band what Pierre and Marie Curie were to the reseach in Physics !!

They were reseachers in Music !!!

  • @atalanteism experimenters! x)

  • Personally thought that this version of King Crimson was an uneasy alliance between "art rock", and punk/new wave as seen through Belew's time w/ (far superior) Talking Heads, but coming out like less a commmercial Devo. Thanks for posting this however, about as good a representation of them as could be.

  • This is so 80's I almost don't love it... almost.

  • @bearmassaro - I try to refrain from thread arguments but -I just visited your page and you have Pat Benetar & Sammy Haggar videos posted...Its Ok to not like a musical style, but before you offer your pontifications, you should know a little of what you speak ....these guys weren't trying to be avant gard - they were, always had been. The Talking Heads were talented an influential but they were David Byrne-and he owes everything to people like Fripp, Eno,etc, Sammy Haggar? please ...

  • No, the Talking Heads did not rip off King Crimson; even through King Crimson had been around since 1969, this line up and style was new in 1982, and the Talking Heads had already been around for at least 5 years before this video. King Crimson's style previous to 1982 had been more prog-rock from the 70's, similar to Pink Floyd, but a bit better musicianship.

  • This totally blew my mind when I saw it live on TV back in the day. This performance changed my life.

  • Is that Will Arnett?

  • @IwanttoliveinParis tony levin.

  • @TheLiesette It was a joke, I'm referring to Adrian Belew. I think he looks a lot like Will Arnett.

  • @IwanttoliveinParis that's the first thing i think of whenever i see the screenshot.

  • is that sid haig on the stick?

  • @droobleball Tony Levin.

  • Fripp and Levin are back together with some other musicians and it seems they're ready to release a new CD. Fripp says it will sound a lot like KC's last two CDs. I'm looking forward to it.

  • fripp is stoooned, every time the cameras on him he cracks up

  • Gee, do you suppose the Heads ripped off anything from this group? PS Great looking video, thanks very much!

  • Gee, do you suppose the Heads ripped off anything from this group?

  • @beboptube Adrian Belew collaborated with the Heads a few times. I guess there would be creative correspondence between the two. Check /watch?v=2KQjy02eqOk - Talking Heads performing the Great Curve with Adrian. It's awesome.

  • I can see where they're trying to go, trying to be avant-garde, but to me, this is nothing but repetitive noise. Talking Heads blows these guys away. Why Bruford ever left Yes to create this junk is beyond me...

  • @bearmassaro Do you even realize what Bruford did with this band before Crimson reunited to form their 80's version?!

  • @DavidKinner I'm fully aware of Bruford's accomplishments with King Crimson. I just don't see this as anything else but a bunch of extremely talented musicians wasting their talents on a bunch of annoying sounds & jumbled, meaningless lyrics...

  • @bearmassaro Not really yes Belew was a weirdo with his lyrics, but he had just gotten out of the Talking Heads, who also had a lot of meaningless Lyrics also. Some of their lyrics made sense some didn't, but I don't hear anything wasted in any Crimson album! Yes their 1970's sound was much better, but this was good in it's own right. I know he stated his biggest reason for living is because his Drum style is Jazz oriented, and Yes was going more and more classical Crimson was Jazz based.

  • @bearmassaro Uhhh does the 80's ring a bell? It was the thing. I think what is sadder, is that all of these guys, including past Crimson alumni who are alive, do not even play together. Sure Fripp does not want to revisit old material, but seriously do they ever think about what the fans want to hear? Why do people purchase and listen to Starless or Larks Tongues, or even Discipline? Unreal they don't tour, let alone play older material for their fans.

  • @revolutionman81 I think it's really stupid. He says he doesn't want to revisit old material, but he seems to have no problem playing some songs from the 1980's Lineup. It's kind of sad that even Asia played some original King Crimson live, Yes, and even Emerson Lake and Palmer. Same with Greg lake he will occasionally play Schizoid Man, and his older songs. Fripp is an amazing musician, but his reasons for doing things don't ever really seem to make too much sense.

  • @revolutionman81 I think fans should not dictate the artist what he would play... The artist is there to get understood (or not) and not to follow somebody else's taste... We love what they did in the 70's or whenever, but we respect they has to do now what they feel like now. Artist is not there to serve, but to communicate, honestly, freely... right?

  • @bearmassaro maybe you should try to play some king crimson, and then try to play while signing...

  • @TheLiesette I'm a drummer, I don't sing...

  • @bearmassaro I agree. They were mega-pretentious. The music reminds me of someone I know, who is very intelligent but cannot communicate properly. I think he has Asperger's syndrome.

All very clever but no warmth, just clinical.

I still admire their technical ability and they wrote the beautiful Matte Kudasai, after all.

  • @capricious71 Oh without a doubt a group of major major talent right there. Tony Levin alone is more talent than entire bands have today. Fripp is probably one of the greatest guitarists of his time...

    But...

I personally don't think this band ever realized it's full potential simply because they were too busy "experimenting" with weird crap like this...

No warmth. Excellent summary. They're using thier instruments, they're not playing them.

  • @DavidKinner Bruford left Yes to play with these guys, then left to play with Genesis in 1976 which was amazing because he improved the songs every show. That's why he got kicked out I have read and only know Phil Collins regrets that. Genesis could have been something totally different if Bruford stayed in the mix I believe. You'll never hear them sound like that on any other recordings. It is a tease really those 1976 shows.

  • @revolutionman81 Yea I have seen videos from that he was amazing with them! He would have actually kept them maybe just as good as Peter Gabriel era Genesis. Or probably better musically, and lacking vocally, but they could have released some really good cds instead of Phil turning it into Duke, and Invisible Touch, and crap.

  • @revolutionman81 He didn't leave in '76, Fripp announced the "death" of King Crimson.

  • @bearmassaro

    huh ?

  • @bearmassaro where were they trying to go exactly?

  • @bearmassaro He left yes because he was bored. Maybe if you could try to understand that you could see the rest of your comments do not make much sense, since the warmth and all that you think it's missing from their music is really there, only in a different form you may not appreciate. I truly cannot believe somebody could see the laughs they are having and think they are not putting any warmth into it.

  • 2:32

    i died

  • they were good once.

  • Comment removed

  • @belongin Yup in 1974. People can know Belew all they want, but they seem to forget that Tony Levin really brought the "80s" sounds and effects hard on this lineup. Ya know what, Discipline would sound freaking awesome if it did not have all the guitar effects like the heavy 80s chorus etc. These effects really make it sound dated, whereas the older material sounds timeless.

  • Comment removed

  • @brajtnerinjo Thank you.

  • What kind of guitar does Fripp use here?

  • @BrommaExpress Roland G-303

  • Belew is making fripp laugh and smile through the whole performnce!Adrian is really incedible, getting so much fom that guitar,a true master..

  • anybody think that the bassist (Tony Levin?) looks like Bronson? XD

  • this is stale as shit.

  • Was Les Claypool influenced by King Crimson at all? Sure seems like he was.

  • @driekone absolutely no way he wasn't. I've come to consider Primus to be the spiritual successors to the 80s King Crimson, their music being sonically more accessible and lyrically a little stranger. Note from this vid how well Belew learned his stagecraft from his time with Talking Heads, you can see a lot of David Byrne in his singing and antics and general paranoid behaviour.

  • @TheBGSMusic Well, it's clear that Les Claypool at least likes King Crimson, so I assume that is why he may have been influenced by the band. Les covered one of their songs one time, and usually when a band that is popular in their own right, yet covers another band, that typically means there was some kind of influence. But whatever, I'm not here to debate the issue.

  • @TheBGSMusic Are you kidding? King Crimson's music is a huge influence for Primus. That whole bass tapping thing came from Tony Levin! Jerry Was a Racecar Driver is totally referencing Elephant Talk. BELEW played with ZAPPA and BOWIE before even touching the Talking Heads. Plus, Larry takes a lot of influence from both Belew and Fripp - His phrasing, offkilter note choices, and effects all come from this era of Crimson.
