I heard this ONCE on the radio all those years ago....fell in love with it....and it was GONE! I'm so HAPPY I can hear it over and over and over! LOVE DA KILLER!
Jerry Lee's great here, but that's a given! ;-) I especially enjoy the video how that during the piano break it splits so that both his hands AND face are in the picture. Very, very nice touch
Amazing how he never gives the same performance of this song....sometimes rockin', sometimes tragic...I like the transparent cynicism of this version.
I don't think I have ever seen praise this unanimous for ANY other musical performance on this site! All I can do is add to it. Jerry Lee Lewis is our honky tonk stylist par excellence. Nobody has ever done this song better, even the great Judy Garland herself. This has been my all time favorite version of this classic favorite for nearly 30 years.
Southern Belle, Gabe... it's 'narcissism' after the greek mythological character Narcissus who was in love with his own reflection in a pool. You don't usually see that 'cissism' construction in English. I'm a retired English teacher and misspellings (except for my own) drive me knuts....
I'm humbled... Did you notice I didn't capitalize the 'G' in 'Greek'? Sorry I love the language so much and, if you were one of my students, you'd keep me grounded. Grins..& Peace.
Well he does a dynamite version of this song--very bluesy, but I think you might be referring to Elvis as the King of RocknRoll! Only thing about Jerry Lee is the narcissm of him referencing himself in all his songs, something Elvis never had to do.
I cant stand when people have to say something negative about jerry lee lewis now hes a narcisist according to southernbellesmiles... Oh by the way He can actually play an instrument not like elvis....
I love listening to JLL..nobody like . Elvis did play the guitar and th piano. Of coure he couldnt play the piano like JLL but he was very good. Best wishes and Great Balls o Fire!
@SouthernBelleSmiles I can understand calling Elvis "The King" but in no way could Elvis ever be called the King of RocknRoll. He only did RocknRoll for 3 years, 1956-59. He went into the Army in 1960 and became a movie star after that. No one person can be called the King of RocknRoll. There are actually four Kings: Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis.
@ingenuitas Fact check....Elvis did Rock and Roll from 56 thru 72.....from then on his music went more towards pop and country. He went into the army in 1958 and came out in 60.....he was a movie star in 56 until 70 with 33 feature films. Elvis is the undisputed King of Rock and Roll. You don't lay down 18 #1's in the US and 21 #1's in the UK and over 140 top 40 hits in the US without being the kIng. Those four you named couldn't lace Elvis' boots.
What I like about this video when hes 2:00 hes just focus and playing his instrument That just shows you he doesnt read music that man just plays it like a jazz muscian improvising
Alot of people dont know hes a musical genius he plays violin , guitar, drums , these are the ones that I know about.
Jerry lee lewis at his best playing his heart out and showing his talent a self taught piano player who I believe hasnt had the recognition that he deserves yes he has been inducted to the rock n roll hall of fame. But it seems people always talk about elvis the beatles ect but this is a real talent that has been playing for 60 yrs hes now about 71 yrs old and he still playing his heart out God bless

the joint is really jumping down at carnegie hall.
Jerry Lee Lewis could be the pianist than Judy Garland has imagined and dreamt at carnegie hall in 1943

@waltts Probably because he's the King of Rock n' Roll.
