Farewell Dan, you were and integral part of the soundtrack to my life, and oft times remind me of so many of the most memorable times in my life, with your songs playing at that very moment.
it is true...i was introduced to america's music when i was 13-14 by an older cousin and i never looked back...my taste in music has never been the same!
I have loved America since 1972 when I was 18. I have met the guys several times and I have enjoyed their music for 40 years. This is a kick ass version of this song. This is a one badass rock band
wow.I always thought it was released as a single..............at any rate.I am getting my 40 yr old dream of seeing them in concert,July 1...I am soooooo excited!
wow.I always thought it was released as a single..............at any rate.I am getting my 40 yr old dream of seing them in concert,July 1...I am soooooo excited!
@SHODANFan , I wish I was 14 again and knew what I know now, All this music is new to you and you get to enjoy the excitement of discovering it...There's alot of it
Don´t get me wrong. I am a huge fan of this guys since 1970 but i have to say this: The worst covering band of America is...America. They always play similar tunes. The beautiful versions are in old LPs. They simply can´t play like that anymore.
@89801wink i have to disagree man. I have the recordings made in Germany in 1974. It hurts my ears. The truth is that they were surrounded by excellent musicians when they recorded the original albuns. Peace
Saw them a couple of years ago at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, was the best concert I have ever been to, I was 17 at the time. I am now 22 and it is still the best concert I have ever experienced.
I had a CB Radio in the 80's (Children that is an ancient communication device before we had cell phones (or before they were affordable)) Anyway, my handle was "Sandman" because of this song and because I was a HUGE America fan.
i had a friend in the early 70's who would give me a ride home from time to time so i didnt have to ride the bus all the time.i had a 12 string guitar that i drug around with me everywhere.his payment for bringing me home was for me to play this song for him which i thought was pretty cool because he was & older senior & i was a sophmore. music rocks.
To hear them live at the BBC studios was truly one my best experiences.I saw many bands there but America came prepared with a great set of music...and talent.
I find this so weird...I'm a metalhead--I listen to the modern heavy metal almost anytime I have a stereo playing--but I absolutely love this song. I believe its the chorus because its so original and it flows so well. I'm only seventeen, and I believe that today's bands can definitely learn something from even just this song.
I received this album as a birthday present at the age of 14 in November 1972. In the 3 days following I knew all the words and was singing along with the album. This performance goes to show that altho the song is 38 years old the band still sounds as if it hasnt aged one bit....
Early 70's. I was a lonely teenager like most of us. I sat in my dad's car at night listening to the 8track all night dreaming of girls and faded jeans!
This song came out of conversations the three of them had with some guys returning from Viet Nam stationed at the base where they lived. They were told that you had to do your best to stay awake while in country in 'Nam, thus running from the Sandman as well as the rest of the lyrics such as "did you hear of my enlistment." This songs a blast to play, too.
I was 5, and my older brother bought this album brand new. He said if I didn't close my eyes and sleep @ bedtime the sandman would come and put sand in my eyes.
@mastertusk According to Dan Peeks own web page he got disenchanted and was unhappy with his life of drug usage during his 7 yr stint with America and left the band in the 1977 and has never reunited with Dewey or Gerry altho both sang back up for 2 of Dans solo albums
What a shame the three are not together. Without Dan this is just window dressing. The Beatles without John? No The Who without Pete? No America without Dan Peek? Sad :(
while traveling the other day, i picked up a classic rock station and dropped jaw when i heard this song come on. i turned up the volume and drifted down the road so caught up in a sweet music memory.
yes it's good, but ventura highway might be better... Come on..."chewin' on a piece of grass...walking down the road. Tell me how long we got to stay here, Joe..."You must admit that the Ventura Highway is a good one. It's an elite track, brude. Oh, brude is a word I made up 2day. It's a cross btw 'brother' and 'dude.' It sounds dorkey and hope no one starts saying it. I actually said it on accident to a friend of mine. I was trying to say bro and dude. It came out brude. Embarrasing.
Southern California's sun, surfing, sailing, studies & soothing the soul with music by thee amazing America! Fell in love with releases of "horse with no name", "SANDMAN" &."3 Roses" then realized we loved every song on your first album. You guys are Amazing.... YOU ROCK!
I was 14 ,I recieved a new stereo for Christmas,Had this new thing called F.M.,8-track and a cassett player W/Turntable,I was checking out the FM dial when I came acrosss 102.5 KSFM..EARTHMUSIC,This song was playing and I recorded it to cassett.I played it over and over because I had never heard anything like it. My taste in music completely changed ..forever.........
You know, I grew up loving America's songs. When I was in my early 20s, I decided I had to have a CD with "Horse with no name" on it in my collection and picked up a "Best of America" CD, When I heard "Sandman" on it, I quickly decided this was my favorite America song of all time. Definitely a timeless classic! :-)
@9hoser those werethe days .. i remember sitting on a sunday with my taper ecorder recording off the radio ,hated it when the presenters talked ove rthe start or the end of a song
@jayfey77 . Good question... Cassets were new and people still had stacks of 8-Track tapes..You couldn't record on to 8-Tracks, But Cassets you could and now you could record from your stereo. Before you would attach a Mic to a tape recorder and put it in front of your speakers.1st Album Zeppelin 1, 1st 8-Track, Pink Floyd, D.S.O.T.M.
@9hoser que lindo comentario, que bello recuerdo, es que América nos cambió. En julio, hace menos de un mes murió Dan Peek, el rubio cantante del grupo. Que tristeza.
"Sandman" was from their 1972 debut album, AMERICA, and it should've been released as a single because it's the best damn song on the album in my opinion. This song definitely showed the music world that they were not just some trio that performs 3-part harmony acoustic songs.
I am so glad I have seen America 8 times through my 46 yrs - I wish it was twice that - the cool thing is that most of them were at Pine Knob in Clarkston, MI what a great place for them to play - they know the place and they rocked everytime. Best time in the front row!!!
And the really bad part of this song, (yes it does vary from the book and movie concept), is that his friends enlistment, was into the sandmen. Now he gets to kill his friend, a "RUNNER"
This brings back SO many memories. I was with a band for many years that covered this song and did it in much the same way -- very guitar driven with extended leads including lots of slide. Thanks for posting, and thanks for bringing back some great memories!
My best old time favorite tune from this band and I have like the music back then and still enjoy it today.
