Wish this music would come back. I know every generation has their time, but this was mine and I loved it. Slow songs at the dance or roller rink. Who slow dances nowdays? I still slow dance to my husband, met when this song was out.
I love this song because my husband song this to me in front of family and friends while we dated. So when I am out and I hear this it reminds me of him. (Milton Diggs). Thanks you for this song.
I put this track on a cassette and took it college, along with Princes spin off group The Family's original version of Nothing Compares 2 U...Oh snapple cakes and shakes...
This was actually before, "The Time". This was primarily Prince and Morris Day on demos. Listen to "Gigolos Get Lonely Too", and you'll hear true raw talent before both of them hit 'Big Time". AWESOME!
My goodness...... These times really need to come back. Music made so much sense. Prince, Morris Day & The Time, Zapp & Roger, just to name a few. They know how to sing & make you feel a certain way. So good.
How did I sleep on this? I thought this was a Full Force joint!! Damn I didn't know Morris had chops like that! He sang the shit out of this! What album is this on? Anyone know?
Full Force killed it too! Shit after hearing this I don't know which one is better!
"ATTENTION PRINCE" You might own the rights to the name "The Time" and you might not let them use the name anymore but as fans they will ALWAYS BE THE TIME to us so you can't keep us from calling them "THE TIME"... SORRY PRINCE YOU LOSE THIS ROUND PURPLE ONE!!!!! OH YEAH THERE NEW ALBUM IS OUT CALLED "CONDENSATE" In store now...
Man I love The Time, & this & Oh Baby are my favorite slow jamz by them, I love Prince's backing vocals, what a music genius he is. But Morris vocals was on point : ) Girl !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was my jam as a dumb teenager madly in love with Morris Day! I was going to marry this guy. LOL!! I saw him in concert and about died! Wow!! I WISH HE WOULD GET SAVED AND SING FOR JESUS CAUSE HE HAS A TIGHT VOICE!! I WOULD BECOME HIS FAN AGAIN.
If you've had a break up with a female... show up with this song blasting on your car stereo & serenade her under her window & if that doesn't get you back up in there... nothing will ;)
@MrKradRetfa Or....it doesn't even have 2 be a breakup....u're just at ur last resort 2 win her heart & u just hope...somehow....its not too late.......
Hard to believe that it has been 30 YEARS since this beautiful song first hit the airwaves. R&B music was such a joy, an utter delight then, not as lackluster and generally uninspiring as it is today.
Listen to Morris Day and Prince, they did all the vocal on this song, along with the rest of the Time's first album. Prince did all the instuments and arrainging and producing, a musicial genius.
Morris Day I love you man!! I have always loved this song. I was just a little girl when this song came out. But the firs time I heard it, instantly it was a hit with me.
THE perfect song for the one YOU KNOW you let get away and really feel really fucked up, now that you know this, and you realize that 1 million others CANNOT match that one person!
Any doubts anyone had about the soul of Morris Day, he ERASED with this song!
I already had the album on the turntable in my room and I put on "Girl" and it was like magic. The whole atmoshere changed and I could see it in her eyes. That song is perfect for young love when you're not quite there yet but you're on your way in a hurry! Kissing all over the bed, hair all messed up, breathing and panting hard..My heart was about to beat through my chest! That's THIS song for me...
It's a sweet melancholy song..Perfect for young love or young crushes. As a kid, The Time and P's music was perfect for me because I patterned myself in the way I looked after P and Jesse Johnson. I always wore my hair long so even then, girls were comparing to P and Jesse. So girls who liked them usually liked me! lol Anyway, this song was part of my soundtrack definately.. I liked a few different girls but one especially was Joyce. I finally was able to get here to come over and man oh man..
For all of ya'll that really like this song, P totally got this from the Rolling Stones's song "Fool To Cry". The keyboards especially are damn near identical. I always liked "Fool To Cry" so when I first heard "Girl", I instantly thought of that song. But I have always loved "Girl". That was my MAIN makeout song! Whenever I had a girl in my room and I knew we were going to get busy (!), I would always put on this song. Hey, I was only 11 when it first came out!
I then saw them again just 2 days later on Valentines Day, Feb 14, 1982 at The Roxy. They were the only band on the bill. I was 11 years old about to turn 12. I first met Lisa Coleman, P's keyboardist, at this show at The Roxy. She was there in the audience. She told me that P was "somewhere around here". P also recorded "International Lover" for The Time but after he heard them doing it in rehearsals, he decided to keep it for himself and put it on his 1999 album!
The first song from the album to be released as a single was "Get It Up" then "Cool". But "Girl" was the pure heartbreak song. Better than "Do Me, Baby" I think, which came out a few months later on P's Controversy album. I first saw The Time when they opened for P on the Controversy tour on Feb 12, 1982 out here at the Santa Monica Civic. It was P, The Time and Zapp. Anyway, when The Time got to this song, all the girls completely lost their minds. They were screaming non stop through the song.
One of P's best ballads. P is on all of the instruments as well as backing vocals. That's the case for most of this album. Morris played drums on a few songs on the second album but not on this one. I know Morris well and I have recorded with him as well as A.C. The song "Oh Baby" was originally slated for P's second album but he replaced it for "With You" instead. So he gave "Oh Baby' to The Time. Yeah, I totally remember when this album first came out. I bought it the day it was released.
When you hear a song and lose yourself in emotion....sadness, happiness, heartbreak, inspiration, joy, pain....that's when you know you got a classic (no matter how popular it was to the rest of the world). This song has that power. Thank you Time for giving us such a majestic R&B ballad.
I love the backwards vocal part at the end. Very Prince.
The Time was one of those bands that just had it together. I can't wait for the new album. Should be coming out soon. Should also be a new Famiy album as well.

I have always love this song..the music...and the words...but what is crazy is that I am a woman that unfortunately went from a long relationship to the best thing that has happened to me for 7 yrs and my sister in law loves this song as much as I....Your artistry is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE FACT IS MOST OF YOUR 80'S BANDS WAS THE BANDS WITH THE REAL TALENT. I MEAN ALL 80'S BAND FROM POP TO ROCK TO HEAVY METAL. I'VE LISTEN TO IT ALL WHEN I WAS A YOUNGSTER. I SEEN PRINCE IN PERSON A VERY TALENTED ARTIST AS WELL AS A SHOW HE HAD TALENT AND STILL HAS TALENT. 80'S ROCKED I AM PROUD TO BE AN 80'S ERRA
Memories are wonderful...especially when they remind you of that special person that was once a part of your life. We we highschool sweethearts. R.I.P. Sheldon.
CHECK OUT THE ICE CREAM CASTLE ALBUM. IF THE KIDD CAN'T MAKE YOU COME,ICE CREAM CASTLE, MY DRAWER AND ETC. TO NAME A FEW OF THAT CUT. BACK THEN I HAD TO GET THE CASSETTE VERSION. THEY DON'T MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS AND OTHERS IN THE LATE 70'S AND 80'S.
young when first heard but you see made big impression on, good music real bands real talent, miss this. I rarely listen to this new stuff its a joke. where are the real artist?
Takes me back to the spring of 82 when I was in the 8th grade. Such great memories. The lyrics are so poinant and almost make me want to cry. I know every guy has been there.
Underground Grooves I like your style very but you got find this song called Maybe I think it came out in 1987 on the b-side of Fishnet on 45 rpm. You seem to be able to find some cool stuff. Please find this. Peace
this is timeless music. It makes all of the music today sound like toilet trash. Rap is a garbage industry, R&B is a garbage industry, and Hip Hop is the worst of them all. Music has went from something that used to make you feel good, to something that makes you feel sick.
@musalaam - Youtube can shut down the comments because you said it all. Everything I was thinking you captured it in this one comment - Thank you! This song takesme to a beautiful place when I didn't even know what love was but wanted some. Much love from New Orleans
Thanks davisyoung1974 for the comment on mine it boggles my mind that alot of good music is getting lost in the shuffle these days cause if your not a tabloid srew up Its hard for real musicians to get real attention these days
@mootothemax01 AMEN. Mojo was the real deal. MFA FOREVAH! (Anyone who was steeped into R&B and grew up in Detroit during the late '70s and '80s will be able to relate.) This particular song from The Time dates from 1981.
I was young when this song came out but being a prince n time fan I eventually found it prince and morris did an awesome job on this a real masterpiece it would be a hit today if the music industry wasnt a joke radio mtv vh1 bet dont really play real music anymore times have changed im 31 glad i got to see the music industry when it was still creative
@humbl121 you are so right.I'm 35 and music really is sad right now glad we had the classics and REAL parents that shared REAL music and life with us to make us understand were thing originated. Now its such a lack of respect for history on things in our daily lives with the Miley Cyrus and T-pain era.
somehow i feel better than you?

CHECK OUT THE ICE CREAM CASTLE ALBUM. IF THE KIDD CAN'T MAKE YOU COME,ICE CREAM CASTLE, MY DRAWER AND ETC. TO NAME A FEW OF THAT CUT. BACK THEN I HAD TO GET THE CASSETTE VERSION. THEY DON'T MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS AND OTHERS IN THE LATE 70'S AND 80'S.

Music has went from something that used to make you feel good, to something that makes you feel sick.

mootothemax01 1 year ago
@mootothemax01 AMEN. Mojo was the real deal. MFA FOREVAH! (Anyone who was steeped into R&B and grew up in Detroit during the late '70s and '80s will be able to relate.) This particular song from The Time dates from 1981.

I was young when this song came out but being a prince n time fan I eventually found it prince and morris did an awesome job on this a real masterpiece it would be a hit today if the music industry wasnt a joke radio mtv vh1 bet dont really play real music anymore times have changed im 31 glad i got to see the music industry when it was still creative
humbl121 1 year ago 49
@humbl121 you are so right.I'm 35 and music really is sad right now glad we had the classics and REAL parents that shared REAL music and life with us to make us understand were thing originated. Now its such a lack of respect for history on things in our daily lives with the Miley Cyrus and T-pain era.
