Michael Andretti should've followed the example of Penske, "Little Al", and "Emmo". Did Penske try to pimp a ride for "Little Al" or Emmo"? NO!!
Penske wheeled & dealed..but when the 6 o'clock gun went off, it all stopped. The Penske Team simply went back to the garage, locked the doors, cut their losses, and took it like the men and champions they are. I applaud them for that. Why? These 1995 cars aren't going any faster than the current cars. The main difference is the sound the cars make, as the cars back then had turbochargers. But guess what? In 2012, no more Honda monopoly, and turbochargers are returning. All you fans that miss the old days need to hop back on the bandwagon.
The last good Indy 500, and to show all you IRL fanboys what real racing is, the cars that got bumped from the field here would have taken pole at the 2010 500.
@ChampCarforlife Actually, if you look on the graphic in the video, the pole speed was 231 in 1995. Tagliani posted a 227.5 yesterday on the pole. They were hitting 228 in practice last week. The overall qualifying record at Indy is 237. I understand the frustration with the fact that the speed at Indy has been curbed by regulations for safety, but let's get real...the cars today still fly!
@TheCarlsonsRaiders I agree IRL racing lost a lot of quality but your statement is wrong: Castroneves took the 2010 pole with a 227.970; the three bumped cars in 1995 ran in the 224's. In fact the 1996 field (without CART teams) still has the record for the fastest single lap, the fastest four laps, and the 2nd fastest field ever. In 1997 when they went to the non-turbos the field average dropped from nearly 228 down to 212! The fastest average qualifying field was at 228.654 in 2002.
@ChampCarforlife Awesome! Both days were full of drama and surprises. Much better now that the best talent from the two split leagues has been reunited. No ugly ducklings in the back of the field anymore. Now let's get the turbos back, get some variety of chassis and engines, and get those speeds up! With better safety features I'd like to see these cars over 240mph at IMS.
@uglycoyote1969: The official record during qualifying is 232,482 mph, in 1992 by Roberto Guerrero. The unofficial one is 233,718 mph, in 1996 with Scott Brayton. It would be official had Scott not been killed during practice before the 500 that year.
@PhilipTheBigOne Roberto Guerrero was the first to break the 230 mph barrier but it is Arie Luyendyk that hold the one lap (239) and four lap records (236?) from 1996. He did it on the 2nd day of qualifying so he did not earn the pole.
@uglycoyote1969: I didn't know that, I got these stats from the Indy 500 page on indycar.com. Where it talks about pole-sitters. But now that you mentioned it, there was an asterisk next to Scott Brayton's name in '96, saying he wasn't the fastest qualifier, so you may be right!!!
@PhilipTheBigOne Brayton did win the Pole that year. His quickest lap came on the first day of Time Trials. Luyendyk's sizzling 237.498 mph lap came on day-2. He was placed on the grid BEHIND the first day qualifiers.
@PhilipTheBigOne Brayton did win the Pole that year. His quickest lap came on the first day of Time Trials. Luyendyk's sizzling 237.498 mph lap came on day-2. He was placed on the grid BEHIND the first day qualifiers. They can only make a run at the Pole on the first day.
@uglycoyote1969: Just found out on the Indy 500 FAQ's about that. It says that Arie Luyendyk turned the fastest official lap in 1996 at 237,498 mph and the fastest unofficial again in '96 during practice, 239,260 mph!!! THAT'S CRAZY FAST!!!
the speed of the cars back then was crazy and i cant belive that penske didnt have a car in the show. penske and indy go together like penut butter and jelly
@geds7 Yes it did die in 95 and its very unfortunate. I remember being at the US 500 in 96' versus the Indy 500 and was just thinking how much they ruined a great thing.
Man! this was like 15 years ago and now this year yesterday Paul Tracy was stupid enough to withdraw his qualify time he's should of started dead last 33rd gosh I'm very glad Tony Kanaan barely made it in I was thinking of oh no not the 1995 fiasco again and this time it happen to Milka Duno she clearly needs to move to a good team not that Infamous Dale Coyne racing she must feel pretty that she's not in this year running of the Indy 500 and Paul Tracy KV Racing made a stupid move withdraw time
@speedjpo Every year she has had teammates, they have found the Top 5 at one time or another during the season. She's never finished in the Top 10 or on the lead lap. She clearly needs her license revoked (if Brian Brainfart finally realises she's an amateur in a professional racing championship); she's no better than King Hiro.
I missed the days when they had Marlboro in their cars. I started watching racing when I was 8 1/2 in 2003, I was 9 that year. I like the old stuff. Also the nitro turbo noise.
You right. I sat in section H last year and had to watch the cars crawl down pit lane with this stupid pit speed limit they have nowadays.
To think that the pole speed was 233+ in 1996 and in 2009 it's 224+...then the Speedway and IRL are shocked that NOBODY even shows up anymore for pole and qualifying days.
i know one thing i wouldve done to increase speed. idve taken the barge boards off the front radiator openings. they were VERY Draggy in the air. worth at least 2 or three tenths.
@coolerindy....i agree with you....this is the real F-Indy car....the "original"......this engine have a beautiful sound...V-8 turbo...Ford, Mercedes and Honda...
know what you mean . . . the racing may be great even better than Formula One but the race commentary is a snore fest . . . bring Paul Page or Bob Varsha or even the NASCAR guys . . . that would spice up the show . . .
Ahh the end of the USAC era and the end of Indy's great legacy. I hope to see this style of car come back and see Indy get back to where it was before the split.
Back when bump day had real drama when top notch teams would even struggle to make it into the greatest spectacle in racing. and the fastest 33 was truly the fastest 33 and when good teams and drivers had to sit out of the race bcuz they could not get the job done.
Man could you image if now days Penske or Ganassi didnt make it. Unfortinitly there is only around 35 cars since the split and the speeds are more stagered. Although I have to give credit this year all the cars qualified in under 4 mph of each other.
Well it all started when King George got rid of turbos for normally aspirated engines and making easier for drivers like Milka Duno to make the field at Indianapolis.
I was watching the 1992 CART race at Phoenix... Sam Posey said that with the rate the Indy speeds were increasing at the time, that the 300 MPH barrier would be broken in 2015.
Well, if we follow the increase of speed at the time, and without any rule change like in the mid 90's...It could had been near that... We were at 241.426 mph in 2000 at Fontana, even with the rule change that make lose 10 mph in average ;)
@iRacerMatt 1992 was the last *real* Indy 500. Now it's just a dumbed down version of stock car racing. I say 'dumbed down' because in the current set-up you can keep the throttle at 100% through all 4 turns. That's not racing, thats worse than a bad video game. They are totally stock though. Every car and engine are indistinguishable and the restrictions make it all identical and slow.
@kerrywsmyth I recall them having to lift, especially after the reconfiguration in 1993. I recall in 1994, the Penske with the pushrod engines definitely had to as well. They do have to even today in traffic at least, not on their own though... at least with a good setup.
I couldn't have said it better myself. When they narrowed the turns at Indy, it ruined the track. It just wasn't the same afterwards. I loved those aprons where drivers could dive under and pass.
While I do understand Indy needed warm up lanes, why did they have to do it at the expense of the dynamic racing?
Getting rid of the V8 turbos was the 2nd worst thing they did at Indy. The turbos is what made the Indycars special here. They sounded so cool!
@iRacerMatt that simply is not fair. rules change every year in most major series and racing is no exception. there has been a concerted effort for YEARS to slow the cars down. that was achieved by taking the turbos away. NOW... the turbos are back...in 2012. i for one am glad. the faster the better as far as i am concerned.
@iRacerMatt You know the worse is now the engines don't do more then 12,000 RPM and because there is no engine competition, less pass oportunity, less drama and the long beach grand prix is borring, sorry but this is going down!!!
@capy090300 Hopefully the new spec will improve that. 700 horsepower but quite a bit less weight than the current car actually gives them similar power to weight to a 800~900 HP car of yesteryear.
It is de facto spec as Chevrolet and Toyota left while Panoz left to work on the Panoz DP01 Cosworth for Champ Car and the Panoz Esperante GTLM for the American Le Mans Series. New indycars are to return for 2012.
The old CART series had 900 horsepower race cars. They actually had to use brakes, instead of just flooring it the whole way like they do now. I consider the racing in the IRL kind of fake, driver talent isn't really showcased, it's basically the driver with the best equipment that wins. Not that Ganassi and Penske's drivers are bad, but guys like Graham Rahal, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Tony Kanaan, etc. could win some oval races if the cars had more horsepower and the driver talent was truly showcased.
I totally agree, while i couldn't exactly say that and figure that out for myself, i don't doubt it. I could easily see that happening as lots of things these days have come to company based funding rather than driver skill.
Panoz didn't actually LEAVE, they just fell so far behind nobody wanted to use the chassis. It was still legal for series use in 2007 but due to lack of development is now only allowed in the 500. But of course, it's so far behind that nobody in their right mind would use it.
@DBoy02 I would... If I could have a faster engine and a suspension derived from the DP01/DP09, because it could be part of an unkillable machine. The only problem the G-Force GF09 had is: when you are in traffic at high speed, it is unstable... But it was know as a car a bit better aerodynamically when all alone.
Almost 20 years ago and these cars look cooler, and are faster than the monstrosities they call indycars today. It's a bit sad really.

Only one engine has been allowed in the IndyCar Series since 2006 as Toyota and Chevrolet left at the end of 2005. Panoz left after the 2006 season.
Today's Dallara Honda just has to be driven flat-out to keep up the speed, but the old CART machines had a great balance of power and downforce.
