BTW, I am a licensed therapist. I love what I do. There is a fine line we all have to walk with emotional boundaries. You have to be very self-aware and work on "your sh*t" so to speak every day so you can be of service to the patients you treat. It is an honor to be witness to their growth. Paul crossed a line (so did Laura, but she is not ethically obligated - she is the patient). His crossing can damage his patient, which should be his main concern. Thanks for "listening."
@dogoodforothers thans for sharing. once had a therapist who crossed the line. no, that really didn't help. pissed me off. was no honor to me. liked 'listening'.
@dogoodforothers what do you think about the show? realistic? how about the dramatizations, laura walking around in her doctor's clothes, therapist touching her, etc...shouldn't happen, should it? yeah, the show would be more boring.
Paul appears to use the psychoanalytic approach to his sessions, which allows the patient to lead the course. But in this case, despite what he believes are feelings for Laura, he should have redirected their sessions to explain that patients do project their wants and needs on their therapists from time to time. Then he really should have obtained objective and professional supervision (even above and beyond Gina) to help him process his emotions.
I understands that "everyone is flawed" as Melissa George says. She does a great job portraying Laura. I just do not find her character endearing, let alone loveable, in any way, especially to a man who is supposed to be an educated and seasoned therapist. I know he is "flawed" too, who isn't? But I just do not see or feel the chemistry. It was completely unethical, inappropriate, and damaging that he pursued anything more than the patient/therapist relationship...
Was she damaged? Yes, she was. Was she manipulative? Border-line personality? Yes, and yes. But, I have to admit, I was drawn to her like a moth to a flame. She was so damaged, and helpless, and alluring, and beautiful, and innocent yet fiery, and contagiously sexy! She's the forbidden fruit that, if I were her doctor, I would have referred her immediately. That being said, I kind of wished something more happened between them. Laura/Melissa was so tempting, it's hard to fathom!
@Shadowrunner6969 Perhaps you are a narcissict driven co-dependant? People that are not developmentally arrested are not drawn to those who are, I would do some introspection if I was you.
@Trox118 Perhaps you are an over-critical troll that has nothing better to do than to pick on comments? Maybe it shows your own insecurities and your own condescending nature. I would recommend you do some introspection of your own because your attitude is unbecoming.
@Shadowrunner6969 Is that your attitude towards your patterns of failure in relationships? Your ambivalence within the desire to seek boderline personality disordered females TEETERS with an innate fixation on introspectively discovering your destructive bite of this forbidden fruit OR your latter choice of obstaining from women that are only emotionally available until the union is solidified, resulting in another pain, another rejection. Seek help, do or do not, there is no try.
@Trox118 Dude, get a grip. I don't look for "damaged goods." I was just commenting on a show that I know is not real. You're a troll and your over-blown bullshit is not warrented. Get over yourself and have a nice day. ;) By the way, I'm laughing at your expense.
@Shadowrunner6969 The show is not real, that is a fact. But the character traits and emotional wounds are very much so real, just as your moth to a flame desire is. I have no attraction to this woman, she harbors traits that you are attracted to, a "damaged, helpless and alluring" individual... as your own words put it. These are simply facts, not over-blown bullshit. But.. most insecure people such as yourself react to cold truth with laughter and personal attacks as a defense mechanism.
@Trox118 Okay, for the record, let me repeat it again: I DON'T GO FOR DAMAGED WOMEN! I'm just saying that Melissa George played the character so eloquently and so convincingly, that she's alluring and it's alluring and provocative. And, I think you trying to instigate an argument about my opinion on a T.V. show and calling me "insecure" is erroneous and unjustified. You're a troll. Why don't you concentrate on your own faults, flaws, and your own insecurities. On top of that, stop answering back
@Shadowrunner6969 same for me. too bad, she'll always be crazy for us then;-). well, at least i don't have to tell myself i missed out on a great woman...
@axlrosea675 Yes, she reminds me alot of women I met in my life. Funny how life imitates art imitates life imitates art - no? And, yes, I can see myself falling out of love with "Laura" fast.
@Trox118 I think you're a pseudo intellectual college dropout who thinks he can psychologize people from bullshit they half form in their minds before they uncaringly type it out onto youtube. Now go back to your unimpressed drunk of a mother's basement. Maybe someday you'll be good enough to gain her attention, dick head.
I notice that the patients I am annoyed by the most are similar to me in some way. For example, I couldn't stand Hope Davis as Mia because she's a successful career woman who has put her work before everything in her life and is somewhat bitter, brittle, a clever know-it-all and a daddy's girl with a chip on her shoulder. I have some of that quality and I absolutely hated her for it. Yup, that's "therapy."
@XOMartha44 Maybe you weren't daddys little girl... maybe you were daddys little boy? Constantly meeting the needs of your father whome you remember as emotionally available yet only in times you were catering to him, and his wants... not the opposite. Problems in childhood are always repeated in adulthood.
Laura is definitely my least favourite character. I actually find it hard to watch an episode with her, and she annoys me so much. Of course Paul doesn't seem to always understand boundaries very well, is not treating her appropriately, and should terminate the treatment and refer her to another therapist. Still, her manipulations and attention-seeking get on my nerves. I recognise that she isn't doing this out of malicious intentions, but believes she needs someone to save her. But still...
I love In Treatment, this story of Laura was intense and Paul being her therapist who she falls in love with....great and in the end he's fallen in love with her but doesn't do anything....brilliant.
I would love to see Laura in the second season, it would be great.
I saw Melissa George in Triangle and really enjoyed her performance. And this programme sounds right up my street, just wish I had satellite or cable at home. Anyway I love that you can just about hear a faint Australian accent when Melissa talks out of character. :)
Melissa was absolutely fantastic on this show. I'm happy that she's slowly getting more exposure. And Gabriel Byrne can do no wrong, as far as I'm concerned. I was happy to see him win and very happy to see his humble acceptance speech. This is an awesome show compiled of awesome people.
shame the Paul/Laura romance never got a chance. I realise that for some people that's inappropriate, but it's television, not real life so, get over it. I'm glad that he didn't go back to his wife though. That would 've been a real disappointment.
Why isn't Melissa George speaking in her lovely Australian accent anymore? Has she forgotten that she is from down under? Come Mel Nicole made it cool years ago.... get with the program
what a shitty ending. Paul really loved her and didn't do anything. He could of atleast kissed her and find out if they could take it slower. I would of liked to have seen Paul get rejected or something. Something better.
But to just do nothing, he wussed out to save himself.
Totally agree. As an Irish person I was delighted Gabriel Byrne won an Emmy, and it is the best he has ever been but Melissa George is outstanding. She is a star in the making, a Naomi, a Meryl, that's the kind of quality she displays here in a portrayal of depth, intensity and menace. I can't say enough about how good she is. Australia does it again!
I like the show (watched every aired episode) but somehow i just think the character Laura even though well presented was justified incorrectly in one aspect (and only this) Andrew. They did this by making clear that her soon-to-be husband was thankful of her honesty. So far they've never touched the fact that he DID get cheated on (handjob or not) and despite all that happened after, they had a responsability to make it clear that she needed to appologize to him with the Truth...it's all BS.
When I am reincarnated, Im coming back as Laura's bra..hahah...whos with me?
