wud really appreciate someone forwarding a link to this song done by the stones after 1975 that rocks anywhere close to this. mt was an incredible virtuoso - even micky stops prancing around at 3:20 or so and looks back at him askance-like, "wtf is this guy doin here - stealing MY show?"
@mrbobevans I saw a Rolling Stone magazine last week (11/ 25/11) that had Mick Taylor @ #36(?) in a list of the top 100 guitarists of all time. They had him behind George Harrison and John Lennon. I liked the fab 4 just as much as anyone but I don't think George could come close to Mick Taylor. Also , Terry Kath of Chicago was left off the list(or I just didn't see his name. No wonder that rag has shrunk to the size of a Readers Digest.
To all comments on Mick T, esp. from LLPGNemo, that's a BIG Amen. Mick T was the best guitarist to ever play as a Stone. Added true musical virtuosity to the band. Of course at some point the Stones almost hired Ry Cooder and/or Jeff Beck - either of those line-ups would have ROCKED. But Mick T back with the band would be huge.
The whole band are really kickin' ass on this tune. I like Mick Jagger's flat singing sometimes. I really didn't hear him go flat here. Ron Wood could/can play note for note what Mick Taylor did on slide, only it would b sloppy. Keith is a performer now for sure 'cause he doesn't even play while he's on stage.
As good a slide player as Ronnie is (and he is one of the greats), his style seemed to worked a bit better for Rod and the Faces than for the Stones. Taylor's ringy-dingy leads on top of Keith's riff-housing was just tits. See the film "Ladies & Gentlemen, the Rolling Stones" from Dallas in 1972 (same tour as this).
June 25, 1972, Hofheinz Pavilion, University of Houston, 4 pm show, my first concert. Since I had bee a fan since 1964 (at age 9), this show definitely changed my life.
Hehe 93MrAcdc i love your passion for Mick T, he is the man, what a player!!! but Ronnie is so good as well, he is a pure weaver, Mick T is a solo guitarist :-) both brought so much to the Stones. Mick T is awesome on Exile on Main St !!!
@llanelli3 the Taylor line-up was the best, but then again at that time Mick and Keith were at their peak so theoretically any quality guitar would have worked. I know at some point Jeff Beck had been given the offer to join. I don't recall if it was after Jones or Taylor.
The Exile on Main Street tour was my first concert. I was 14 and boy it changed my life! After that, I was hell bent on learning how to play guitar. The Stones were a big influence on me and my friends guitar playing. Great, great band!!

One of my fave Stones Tunes. Mick Taylor may not have been an overwhelming stage presence; but he was the BEST part of the Stones at their peak
