Wow to "name it and claim it" con artists. It is amazing how a suit and confidence can tap into years of authority figure conditioning to trigger the trust required for self-hypnosis. If you were to debrief many of the people that are "touched" by faith healing cons, you would find most were skeptical but the authority figure coupled with a smooth reassuring voice telling them something they wanted to hear over came any resistance they had. Trust and hope is a powerful elixir for mind control.
You think people didn't have magicians and hypnotists back at prophet Moses, Jesus and Mohammad times? Obviously they did, as is described in the Holy Books. But if you can't see the difference between a magicians words and a prophets words then that's your fault. Every human being has an innate ability to recognise good from evil. If you've ever read at least one passage from The Qur'an or The Bible you would know that there is at least some truth to it. This video makes an important point - as a child, my parents took me to Pentecostal tent revivals and "miracles" services. The faith-healers were able to work the crowds, causing them to believe the sick were actually healed , etc.
But it's all fake - they were simply employing well-known psychological techniques. Today, I'm an atheist.
I don't know what the difference is between this kind of hypnosis to make yourself fell better and narcotic drugs. I mean if you don't care whether your good feelings are based on anything real or whether they are harmful or if you think that what you feel is what determines what is real. why not just do heroin or opium or something? you're sick if you think this way. at least drug addicts acknowledge what they do as a temporary chemical high. skepticism and truth and objectivity are important.
I think this islike saying it'd be a good thing if we couldn't feel physical pain because we convinced ourselves so. But it IS a good thing to sense damage to your body. Reasonably much.
Similarly it'd be a reasonable thing to remove exessive psychological pain but not ALL. You'd never know if you are being exploited, in danger of deception etc.The only issue is to get a reasonable level of confidence and presence of mind and effort and motivation, not to make it irrationally absolute.
