It is simply the nerves acting involuntarily after the brain has been destroyed. There were many times when you took a second shot on a rat that has already expired, but was still twitching.

Most of them died instantly and the ones that didn't soon had another shot fired into them, the movement you see after is nerves nothing else the rats are stone dead

Also I think his gun is extra fac (more than 12ft/lb) which is more than enough for rats/rabbits and pigeons my air arms s400 classic runs at 11.78 ft/lb and that easily takes rats and rabbits at 40 yards I've had a few over 40 yards and one pigeon at 70 yards (probably luck) but even so it died instantly

I had a problem with rats getting into my flat from a hole near the radiator pipe - these vermin stink to high heaven - I killed 8 with a trap before I found the hole and sealed it. Flat still smells musty its disgusting, I would do the same as these guys to them. Shoot them or whatever I can.
