I really enjoyed the changing personality of the Neroon character. People, rightly, get hooked on the changes of G'kar & Londo, but Neroon was one who started very much as the cliche Angry Alien, but developed into something so-much more.
I have all the Babylon 5 CD that were released. Just now I realized this episode's music was not released. Now I want it. That music where they're fighting after Ivanova says something must have come up. And Neroon, even as a minor character, he was quite interesting near the end of his moment in the series. He changed almost as much as G'kar did.
Marcus was a wonderful noble character, and what a world we would have if people were like him. I hope those that like Marcus have read JMS's story where Marcus returns in the future, it's great.
@25832 B5 was actually heavily influenced by the Lord of the Rings Books, which the writer, J. Michael Straczynski, admits. I mean, think about it; the scene you are referencing to the book is where Gandalf falls into shadow while fighting a great evil at the Bridge of Khazad-dûm only to be reborn, just like John Sheridan plunged to his death fighting Shadows at Z'ha'dum only to be reborn. ;)
My favourite part about this episode is that right before this battle, Delenn asks Marcus to delay Neroon or distract him, but above all else, do NOT confront or challenge him directly or he will kick your ass. Looks like she was right.
The Captain of the Gate: "To every man upon this earth Death cometh soon or late. And how can man die better Than facing fearful odds, For the ashes of his fathers, And the temples of his gods,
@Brianboro67 Actually the entire studio work was done in california in a converted factory close to a US Air Force Base. The only thing that wasn't produced in the USA was the music which Christopher Franke composed, arranged and performed with the Berlin Symphonic Orchestra in Germany. The soundtrack was edited there, converted and send back to California via internet.
I find it very interesting that Marcus spends half of the fight facing away from Neroon. Wouldn't it generally be prudent to look at your opponent instead of the wall? Probably makes blocking blows easier too, although he doesn't have too much trouble even facing away.
Anyway, absolutely love this scene. It's the high point in an otherwise average episode. Neroon is awesome!
@Brianboro67 None of the studio work was done here in Britain. Carter went to L.A. for the part, Vickery's American. (True about the Arthurian legends, though.)
The music is simply stunning during the fight sequence at timing 1:32. Christopher Franke is simply a maestro when it comes to invoking and provoking emotion. The "In the Beginning" film soundtrack is masterful and the final track of it "Battle of the Line" etc is graceful, chilling and ethereal. In regards to the music at 1:32, is it on any of the Babylon 5 compilation CD's? Great video sequence :-)
Neroon was one of the best characters. Killing him was a terrible mistake. We should've seen more of him.
I'd so far as to say I'd love for him to succeed Delenn as the new ambassador to B5 at the end of season 5 (along with Vir and Ta'Lon). Couldn't you just see him in that long shot with them and the others when Sheridan and Delenn leave?
I had the biggest crush on Marcus when I was in HS. He was on the 'men I would marry' listing. :)

Like many other characters in the series, Neroon undergoes a transformation - from a xenophobic warrior to a moment of self-discovery.
blueeyedcowboy17 - You should also upload the scene of neroon's death in the Star Fire circle.

Good idea though.

@Kunama1000 IN this episode i believe Neroon was there unofficially. He snuck on B5 and was in hiding, hence why there are in this dark area.

One small question.
If Babylon 5 has a no weapons policy.
Why can Neroon get a fighting pike on the station?
I can understand the rangers having theirs, but Neroon?

@Kunama1000 Diplomatic immunity.

Love this scene.
Shows how good Marcus is as a character.
Utterly dedicated to the cause of the Rangers that he is willing to die for them and their leader.
And he has the skill to back it up, taking on and holding his own against one of the best of the Mimbari warrior caste.
Small wonder this act earned him Neroon's respect.

I love this scene.
At when they fight I want to cry.
And at the end I want to laugh.
A beautiful play of emotions.

Male bonding at it's finest. Neroon's laugh made it so. Classic Sci-Fi. Thank you, JMS.

@toddsmitts Yeah, but characters getting themselves killed for noble causes is like some kind of Babylon 5 law. They do it all over the place.
He would have been a great main character, though. :)
msanniemc 2 years ago
@Brianboro67 Actually John Vickery is American. You can hear with a more natural accent when he plays Mr. Welles.

Marcus is one of my favorite characters, but I hate to see him lose so badly to someone who lost to Sheridan when Sheridan was practically unarmed

I don't know how people can call this the worst episode when it has a scene like this. Ever heard of fast forward? ;)
Great episode even if it is only 20 minutes long.
msanniemc 2 years ago 8
Because it's part of the episode "Grey 17 is missing," the main story to which was just a little too slapstick, IMO.
It is good in that shows more of Neroon's own transformation, balancing the transformation of his mentor, same as DeLenn's balanced out Sinclair's.
