I'm not a big fan of current R&B ever. But "Umbrella" was epic, for the reason that it was one of the biggest, hugest drum parts heard in hip hop in YEARS. It could be a drum beat producers could use as a new clave, just like "Sucker M.C's", or "Planet Rock", or "Atomic Dog", or "Funky Drummer" those songs whose drum part constantly gets recycled. That drum part was magic , but I think the melody of current R&B is corny, more pop today, less bluesy than it use to be.

I'm a huge jazz fan yet i prefer the original, seeing as the groove on it is great, the drumtrack really makes it.

And Rihanna is a phenomenal singer so it's got to be hard to top her performance.

Jamie is one of my favorite musicians, but I think anybody who puts down Rhianna's version is naieve and probably biased towards rap/hip-hop/r&b. The girl has an amazing voice and I guarantee you that Cullum himself thinks his version doesn't even compare.

I agree with you Rihanna sure has an amazing voice. I don't really like the hip hop/ R&B music people listen to nowadays. I really like this version because of the more dynamical variations + improvisation. Well, Jamie Cullum really 'turned the song into a jazz song' so I think it's difficult to compare it with Rihanna's, but I just think this version sounds nicer than Rihanna's.
