Construction of the telescope has now began on the first roads leading up to the new telescope location. The telescope could see first light as soon as 2018 and full operation in the early 2020`s. The telescope was originally planned as 42 meter but has been scaled back slightly in it`s final design to roughly 40 meters. When finished it will become by far the biggest earth telescope ever constructed for the visible (and mid-infrared) spectrum.
