Covering by ear is great. My Fade to Black, I did the whole thing by ear...but cause of that, and sang it wrong lol.

The point is, it rocks most when a musician just does everything by ear. When u play by ear, you change things to suite you, and thats how it should be. Covers aren't about copying exactly, its about making it with your own personality, and youve done it very well here. Plus you'r voice its beautiful :D, and your struming, and guitar! your voice is best, not to mention the hair!
